onmyway
Did everyone get status updates by email for all three schools? I received two such emails, with updated timestamps in the portal for two schools, but one of my schools is still timestamped from December. I only received one status email because I only applied to one school -- but I have been trying to sleuth to see if receiving status updates has any deeper meaning or not, as some people don't seem to receive the emails but still get offered awards. I mean if it makes us feel any better, its likely we made it past the department. When I applied last year, I was informed a few days shy of April 1st that I did not receive the award and my status on the research portal was immediately set to "ineligible". So I have a feeling no news is better than some news? It's extremely challenging not to think about it. I have a lecture tomorrow morning I have to attend at 9, so I'm praying I don't have to do some groupwork amidst possible tears (lol). But at the same time, we gave it our all so that's all we could have done.

Yeah absolutely - when I think about everything that brought me to this moment - suddenly the award is secondary to my own willingness to wholeheartedly pursue what i believe in. I’m sure it’s similar for others in this forum - nothing can take that away. Did they let you know the reason why your application was ineligible last year ? It said the generic ineligible message about not meeting the requirements. I think was due to not having a first class average. Which made sense as they didn’t count my grad school grades at the time, as I applied for SSHRC during my first semester of my program. Now though, I got that daunting email on Monday stating the results are in but “you won’t know for 3 days!!!!”

Unfortunately it does say "Ineligible" on my research portal from last year, not "not offered". But I also received my status update prior to April 1st last year. Perhaps that's what the difference is?

Where on the website does it say that ? My grades are very much on the threshold... I’ve seen a number of people post that they were notified their application was ineligible (first class average) just like @lisafaramentioned before the April 1 release. I’m curious as to why it results in a not offered for some and ineligible for others.

What's brutal is the department 100% knows who won already. I just wish I knew!!

Whereas "Not Offered" could mean that by the time your university of choice receives the application (once passed through the department that is, and is handed off to the head committee), they may feel that the application is not "meritorious" compared to other applicants. I saw online that the committee ranks applicants, so I think they consider 1) your department's quota (mine is 12 applications) and 2) whether yours is strong outside of the application requirements. But this is all hypothesizing, so I'm not quite sure. I went online and found docs for McGill's webpage, so I'm going off that lol

It seems to be a lot of spread sheet ranking. Is the department quota you mentioned for applications forwarded or awards given? Generally there is only one student a year in my program who receives SSHRC.
Hopewillcometrue
This info can be found once I log in to the portal: Not Offered: The application has been deemed non meritorious in the institution’s competition. Subsequent offers may NOT be made to the applicant. Ineligible: The application has been deemed ineligible based on the eligibility criteria outlined in the funding opportunity description. I also saw a table somewhere on the nserc website says it will be based on the 3rd and 4th years grade if you are already in the graduate program, and beased on 2nd and 3rd year if you are in your final year. Unfortunately, my 2nd year grade is much better than my 4th year, but I'm already in my program. (

I think on the SSHRC website it should say how many awards are allocated per institution. So it depends on how many people are in your program as seen below. I copied this from the McGill website, but it depends which institution as some Universities get more quotas for awards than others. Also its up to the committee's discretion to pass along the maximum amount of award quotas per department. So that's where it gets tricky. Less than 20 SSHRC: 4 NSERC: 2 CIHR: 2 21-40 SSHRC: 8 NSERC: 4 CIHR: 4 41-60 SSHRC: 10 NSERC: 6 CIHR: 6 61 and more SSHRC: 12 NSERC:

I found a presentation online that breaks this down, if can be found under https://www.mcgill.ca/gps/files/gps/webinar_staff_2020.pdf. Tricky thing is it seems if you are a part time student within that two year mark, they may actually take those class averages into account until they count back 24 credits. So for example I have one year of full time graduate studies, and then five consecutive semesters of part-time studies before that (which equates to 24+ credits). But it's hard to say if they looked at that. It seems there's strange wiggle room with the "24 credits of full time equivalent"
