I applied to the MA at Washington and the MA at UF (I saw that you made a lot of comments on the UF thread). Looks like we're both in the same boat. I would be ecstatic if I got into UW's MA program. I went to UF for undergrad, and so I am hoping to be able to get out of Gainesville (it's a great town, but i've been here for about five years and need a change of scenery).

I went to UF for a year of my undergrad, and I'm from Florida. It would be kind of nice to live there again, but I love Austin, so that's what I'm really hoping for.

Good luck! Hopefully we'll both start hearing within the next few days...

Here's the email:

Thank you for your application to the University of Washington Graduate School. Your file has been carefully reviewed by the graduate admissions committee in the English Language and Literature (PhD) program.

Unfortunately, the committee has decided not to recommend your admission and I concur with this decision. The number and quality of graduate applicants to the University of Washington are extraordinary and these difficult decisions are reached through careful consideration of all applicants to a given program. In many cases, enrollment restrictions are also a factor, limiting our ability to accept all qualified applicants.

If you have questions regarding the reasons for this decision, they should be directed to the graduate program.

I realize that this outcome is disappointing, but I do thank you for the time and effort you invested into applying to a graduate program at the UW, as I recognize that expenditures of money and time to do so can be considerable. I wish you well in your future educational endeavors.

Sincerely,

Gerald J. Baldasty

Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate School

University of Washington

If it makes you feel any better, I just received a rejection letter too. Though I realize academics are a notoriously awkward bunch, this notification struck me as undiplomatic (mainly the "I concur" segment. . . I mean, clearly you do concur or you wouldn't be sending me this letter. Sheesh.) COME ON! We study the ENGLISH LANGUAGE! Surely there's a softer way to convey this news--in fact, I know there is since I've received many a notably kind rejection letter in the past. But this one is right up there with a rejection letter I got last year that looked as if someone copied and pasted my online DENY status on to a scrap piece of paper. Not. Classy. I think every applicant deserves a little more for his/her time and effort, and I'm glad to hear (based on previous posts) that I'm not the only one who thinks so.

There's a rejection posted on the results board. Firstly, condolences and good luck elsewhere. Next, did they include any info about number of applicants, number accepted, how they're notifying, etc.? I haven't heard anything from them. . .

I haven't heard one way or another yet, but one of the graduate advisers told me that there would be two waves of acceptances. I called in a panic after my MA program forgot (!!!) to send my transcripts, and was told I would be evaluated in the second pool of applicants. Hope that helps a bit!

The part that killed me was when they mentioned the time and effort I spent for the application. I kind of just want to send them a thank you card for graciously accepting my application fee (and I had to overnight it, so $20 more). At least they got my name right, BU addressed me by my last name (a recurring problem for 21 years, it got old quick)—it was icing on the cake. At least I've been accepted to UCF.

BU addressed everyone by their last name, I think. My last name would never be confused as a first name, and they still addressed me by it. dry.gif

Has anyone been accepted yet? Or just rejected? I have not yet received my UW rejection, although I am sure it is only a matter of time.

I'm still waiting on my rejection, too.

I would say that we could commiserate over our (or at least certainly my) impending rejection together (we are both in Cambridge!), but you have been accepted somewhere at least! I have not heard anything from anywhere yet and it is killing me!!

Congrats on Penn State, btw!

No word yet probably means you're on a lot of waitlists.

(By the way QuentinComp, do you know where on the Charles is the plaque marking Quentin committed suicide? I've heard one exists but is somewhat overgrown now.)

I JUST got my first rejection. It was from a school in which I applied to the PhD program, and they said the reason it took so long was because a POI was fighting for me to be accepted to the MA program, but ultimately he could not. It was at least a really nice rejection to receive.

And, no, I do not know where it is! I have looked a few times in various rumored spots, but with no success. I see a scavenger hunt in our future. And it should probably end at a bar with a heavy pour.

I spent a summer at Cambridge and love, love, loved it! I wish the funding were different; I'd have loveto do my grad work there. Anyway, hoping to hear from UW soon. Good luck to all of you!

Edited to add congrats to Osodulce on Penn State! I'm so thrilled for you, especially after your luck earlier in the season. One of my undergrad profs did his Ph.D. there and loved it. Best of luck to you!

I called. No decision has yet been reached on my application. I was also informed that the admissions rate for the Ph.D. is 10 percent. Someone had said they accepted 10 applicants out of 500, but that is incorrect. It is 50/500.

Nobody has posted any acceptances yet, nor have I seen any in peoples' signatures. I'd guess they're weeding down to a smaller pile before starting to send out acceptances. Thanks for the info cicada. Those numbers match more closely what I've heard. I think likely they admit about 50 (maybe both Ph.D. and MA) and end up with a 10-person Ph.D. cohort.

Wow! Thanks for the info--I didn't realize that they accepted so many. Does anyone know if this means that they maintain a smaller waitlist? I'm currently waitlisted at another school, and while I'm happy that I haven't been rejected from that program yet, part of me just wants an answer one way or another.

sorry to hear that :(

have you heard anything about when LSU may be notifying?

No. Only basing off last year's results of late march. I'm hoping my lifelong dedication to the color purple will pull through. Down to 4.

Emailed to ask about notification timframe and was told my application was complete and that most applicants should hear in March after the review comm carefully reviewed eaxh file. . . So nothing new. I guess we'll just all have to hang tough.

I feel like I'm hanging tough on way too many things right now, particularly UT. I really want to know if I get to stay in Austin this fall or if I'm going to have to move AGAIN.

I will move no matter what, but I really want to know about UTA and UW. Sigh. Luck to you!

Same here, just a question of how far away. Rochester is a move two hours north. Florida is about 20 hours south. UNLV is I don't even know how many hours west. UMD is 6 hours south (though if I don't get in anywhere, I'll be moving to MD anyways to return to my HS teaching job. I'm on a 2-year leave of absence to get my MA).

Best of luck Tortola and Lyoness!

Yeah....moving is going to happen but it makes my head ache to think about it. I'm anxious to hear from UW, but this would also be the most complicated move for me. It's also the most expensive city on my list, by far. But Juan Guerra is there, so...
