Itchy Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 Dear God, has anyone heard anything from Stanford? There have been (in theory) some rejections, but there is a large wall of silence around that university, and it's driving me NUTS. It's like they're all trees or something.
humdevphd Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 I applied to the Social Psych program. I'm sure I didn't get it but it would be nice to know for sure. I have a spot in another lower ranked (although those ranks haven't been updated in 10 years so I don't trust them) research 1 university which I think I will be really happy at, but it would be nice to know for sure where I am going next year. I didn't check out the Psych department, but I know that several departments in the Social Science's school have had their Prospective Day visits. I know that doesn't help when you need a confirmation in either direction. Lo siento! :?
Nilla Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Dear God, has anyone heard anything from Stanford? There have been (in theory) some rejections, but there is a large wall of silence around that university, and it's driving me NUTS. It's like they're all trees or something. I received a rejection from Stanford very early on, sometime in February I think. If you haven't heard anything yet, maybe that's a good thing? I don't know. I do know several other people who were also rejected from Stanford the same day as me. Good luck!
psychplease Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 I also got a Stanford rejection ages ago...so I guess hearing nothing from them is a good thing
psychdork Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Has anyone heard anything from Indiana U or Wayne State? I know Wayne is supposed to have a "prospective student" weekend in early March and so far I haven't heard anything.
shinrigaku Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Hi everyone, I can't believe I didn't know about this website or these forums until today. Guess I'll join the commiseration! I noticed some posts asking about info from certain schools awhile back but it's a bit late to respond to those individually, so here's what I've got so far: Accepted: University of Maryland at College Park (SDOS), University of Kansas, University of Hawaii at Manoa (Community and Culture-- already turned down) Interviewed but still waiting: University of Toronto, Georgetown (Human Development and Public Policy) Blindly waiting: UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, Stanford (Personality), University of Virginia, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of British Columbia, Iowa State University Rejected: University of Michigan (surprise! haha) To the person who got into Kansas: Congrats, and I got the same message about funding! Who are you interested in working with there? For people who applied to UVA: I went to UVA as an undergrad and know that at least 3 of the professors I worked with in Social are not likely to accept students due to funding, too many students, etc. I applied anyway because I'm still miffed that they made me graduate and leave the place! However, I haven't made any inquiries lately (awkward since I don't want professors to worry about me taking it personally) so your guess is as good as mine! Some of the information I've read about interviews/recruitment weekends at UCSB and UC Davis is discouraging, but I suppose it's still optimistic to keep fingers crossed for a spot on the waiting list. I live in Japan right now, and I get very impatient waiting for mail! It's a convenient excuse for why my heaps of acceptance letters with extravagant fellowships haven't arrived yet, but I suppose the distance excuse doesn't hold well for email. :-) Congrats to everyone on acceptances so far!
steveotron Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 To the UC Davis people who received and didn't receive the e-mail: Did your status change? I didn't get the e-mail, haven't been interviewed, and my status hasn't changed.

weeble Posted March 9, 2009 Author Posted March 9, 2009 RE: UC Davis I got an email from them on Friday that said my status would be updated on March 12th after 8pm. The email came from the grad division, not the department, so I'm anticipating seeing a rejection posted. (I haven't had an interview or anything). Best of luck to those who are interviewing today!
liszt85 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 To the UC Davis people who received and didn't receive the e-mail: Did your status change? I didn't get the e-mail, haven't been interviewed, and my status hasn't changed. Same here.
SweeneyAmong Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Well my rejection from UMass arrived today- making me feel mildly nauseous. Luckily Plan B is already underway and I'm thinking that Plan C (aka gainful employment) might be a good thing to kick off too. Add to that the fact that my faculty advisor for my thesis hasn't yet responded to my emails for us to meet so I can be credited for my work, and you can see the happy state of things here. Better luck to everyone else.

psychplease Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 I do wish I had found this site sooner, it's quite nice to see so many people going through the EXACT same things I am... Thus far...I've been accepted to Claremont Grad for applied Social (very excited as this was my top choice)... rejected from Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, UNC, Michigan State, University of Maryland, and Yale (None of these were TOO surprising, disappointing nonetheless) Out of curiousity, does anyone have a gauge on how many people are applying straight out of Undergrad? I am just graduating undergrad this year and I feel like that put me at a slight disadvantage compared to those of you who have been out in the 'real world' for some time. Of course I have absolutely no idea what percentage of people are applying from an Undergrad level and we ALL know these stats are ridiculously hard to come by. Any help would be appreciated. On a more personal note, anyone else interested in Intergroup/Group Dynamics stuff? Thanks a lot, if anyone has any questions for me or wants to chat about programs, please let me know. Cheers.
goose2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Hi Psychplease, Did you get any funding from Claremont beyond the 25% tuition assistance? I got accepted there too but I'm having a hard time with the idea of going into major debt when I have acceptances from other programs that will give me full funding.
asocialpsych Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 goose2009, why are you considering Claremont if you got into other schools? I've only gotten into Claremont and am trying to decide if it's worth all the debt. What draws you to the program? Is there something special about them I don't know?
weeble Posted March 9, 2009 Author Posted March 9, 2009 Claremont has some really good faculty, especially in positive psychology and evaluation. It's a really collaborative program, and the current students there all seem to love it. The campus is beautiful, and they have good connections with local orgs for internships, etc. I'm seriously considering them, even compared to a full funding offer at another program.
shinrigaku Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 What professors at UVA do you know of that are not likely to accept students? I sent you a personal message because I didn't want to start any rumors about professors that I heard casually... they know where to find me! Also, same deal for me about UC Davis as some of you-- no email, no status change. By the way, how about those admit/deny provisions they have on the website? I'm not sure I want to know I didn't get in because my letters of rec weren't strong enough! Haha
weeble Posted March 9, 2009 Author Posted March 9, 2009 I'm not sure I want to know I didn't get in because my letters of rec weren't strong enough! Seriously. But I guess it would be good to know.
goose2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I don't think I'll end up at CGU, but I'm willing to talk with them about possibilities for funding. We will see. I just looked through all of the results posted for U of Chicago and no one from psych has posted so much as an interview. I wonder if they are really just informing people through snail mail... I guess we will know soon enough.
SharperImage Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Yeah, I haven't heard from UChicago either. I know that they are typically late® in notifying applicants, but I'm not certain that they have an interview weekend.
charlotte.willer0320 Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 To the person who posted a rejection from UNC, did you have an interview there?
psychplease Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 I posted a UNC rejection...had no interview there though to the person who was inquiring.
Sahana Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 to shinrigaku, I was the one who posted about the acceptance from kansas. I'm interested in working under ludwin molina and monica biernat. what about you? I noticed you got accepted my umd (sdos) as well. did you receive a notification by post?email? i've applied there and my status in apra is still "pending"! the graduate coordinator is yet to reply to my emails i live in india so i have the same excuse for not receiving any of my delayed acceptances ! to psychplease, i completed undergrad in 2007 so i don't have much "real world" experience as well
shinrigaku Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Sahana-- At Kansas, I'm interested in working with Glenn Adams for cultural psych. Also would like to work with Monica Biernat and Chris Crandall some. There seems to be some interesting political psych going on at Kansas-- that's something Ludwin Molina does, right? I've barely heard from the department though, probably because they're freaking out about funding us. As for UMD SDOS, I found out via email on Feb 1. I'm not sure how many students they plan to admit in total. So far I've heard about one person who's already accepted the offer and another who hasn't decided yet. There was no interview, which surprised me. On another note, I'm becoming depressed about prospects for Americans in Canada. A University of Toronto professor who I interviewed with told me today that the university was limited in the number of offers they could make to foreign students this year, so he couldn't make a formal offer to me now. His email generally made it sound like he planned to admit me if he could get the approval of the university, but I'm not quite sure what to expect. I was wondering if anyone else has had similar or different experiences at Canadian schools this year. I'm extremely interested in UBC but have no idea what my odds are there.
