Really appreciate having those extra subforums. I really look to TGC as a place not only for applicants but also as a gathering place for graduate students as well. Those new subforums definitely confirm this for sure!

That was definitely our aim in creating the new subforums. We'd love to have more people stick around, rather than disappearing once they arrive at their programs in the fall.

Same here, definitely sticking with this forum through my program!

I agree - the new subforums are great. I am looking forward to using TGC all through my grad program! Strangefox is not going anywhere :D

Awesome. I'm glad to hear it. Feel free to start new topics related to the Grad School Life!

I definitely plan to be around too as well and I do appreciate the new subforums. I am wondering if it would be a good idea to have another subforum under 'Grad School Life' related to non-grad school stuff, ie stuff related to the 'life' part of the work/life balance. A forum to talk about things like socialising in grad school, or even about raising kids while in grad school, or building and maintaining relationships while in grad school. Or should those topics be discussed in the Lobby or maybe the Officially Grads subforum?

This has nothing to do with your post (even though I agree with it), but I LOVE that picture.

Officially Grads would be the place for those discussions, if you want to focus them on people already in or about to be in graduate school. The Lobby is for more general inquiries that apply to people regardless of their educational status.

I would like to ask - why when you look at a list of titles of threads some of them have those blue dots on the left and some have stars and some don't have anything and applear on the white background?

I'm not positive but here's what I've figured out.

Blue dot - Thread with new posts since you last read it

Blue star - Thread with new posts since you've last read it AND that you've posted in

Those with nothing - No new posts since you last read it

See, I have no dots or stars- just folders.

A blue folder for new posts (but that you haven't posted in) and a blue folder with a document in front if there are new posts and you've posted in it... A light gray folder with the same document/no document system if there are no new posts.

Folders??

t_unread.png, and t_unread_dot.png or t_read_dot.png.

And clicking on the folder takes you to the most recent post, as opposed to clicking the title of the thread.

So now I'm getting a message that I've "reached my quota of positive votes for the day", when I think I've used 2 or 3?

Is this new? I don't remember running into it before.

Ok, so today the folders are gone and the dots and stars are back.

I guess the display depends on the browser. Using Chrome, I still see those blue and faded folders; using IE those dots and stars appear.

I always use firefox on the same computer and I see both, at different times. I haven't been able to detect a pattern for when the display changes yet, though. Seems completely random. Right now it's stars and circles but this morning it was folders.

Out of context, we all sound nuts. "Right now it's stars and circles but this morning it was folders." Hehe :P

FWIW, I *thought* it was a browser thing but now both Safari & Chrome for Mac are using dots and stars instead of folders, which I used to see in Chrome only...

Yep, the quota has always been there but it seemed to me it was more than 3 (I thought 5)...
