snes Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 Dunno about UT or USC. I'm also in the dark about Yale, Duke, UCLA, and NYU.
Dharma Bum Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 Same here, I've heard nothing from Duke... Although I know there were rumors circulating about UCLA flying out their prospectives, I kinda had a visit with the department head and a faculty member last spring... so I guess I can hope?
amadeus122 Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 Hey Dharma and snes, I don't know how the other departments managed this, but UCLA definitely did not fly me out to interview with them on 27 Jan. I paid for the trip myself and still haven't heard anything. This is for composition, though, so who knows? Hooray for a Stony Brook rejection first thing Saturday morning!

Wow, you had to pay yourself? No reimbursement at all???? Man, that doesn't bode well for funding.
eum-ag Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 I'll agree with that statement, snes. When I talked to a professor at UCLA before I applied to schools, they said they were really uncertain what their funding would be like this upcoming year. So with a sign like that, it may not be good. Which is a shame, as it's really a good school (though obviously I'm predicting a rejection, as there is an ethno admit and it's not me).
amadeus122 Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 For composers, it's actually not that uncommon to have to foot the bill for these things yourselves. All of the major conservatories hold "Audition Weeks" whereby students have to pay out of pocket for lodging, meals, etc., sometimes for more than 2-3 days. Some people did interview at UCLA via Skype, but my impression was that most composers called in (including potential Masters students) simply bit the bullet and flew out for the weekend.
snes Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 Hey, who's the Columbia musicology interview and who is the other Northwestern theory/cog admit? Because in the case of NWU, I probably met you last weekend, right?
purpledinosaur Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 I'm officially writing off Columbia too, Karajan. Ah well.
Karajan Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 I'm officially writing off Columbia too, Karajan. Ah well. We can find solidarity in our mutual despair! Incidentally, I'm surprised they sent out an interview notification on a Saturday...
comp12 Posted February 26, 2012 Author Posted February 26, 2012 No news from Columbia for composition either
Josquin Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 Same for Yale, which is depressing, since a couple days ago I attended a fantastic talk by James Hepokoski on the Heiliger Dankgesang...I was, of course, too scared to ask him if he knew anything about admissions.

kccur Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Looks like we're pretty much down to Yale. They're keeping up the suspense!
snes Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 I think Columbia comp is meeting tomorrow. I overheard something. I have no more information. This message will [not] self destruct.
purpledinosaur Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Got an interview notification this morning. Mutual despair fail. But congratulations!!
comp12 Posted February 27, 2012 Author Posted February 27, 2012 Thanks for the update, snes. I will now plan to hop in the car tomorrow to drive down to the voodoo shop!
spparkle Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Did anyone apply to Oxford or other UK universities for musicology?
KGW Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Hey everyone! Did anybody apply to UT@Austin in general or for Theory PhD? I haven't heard anything from any of the schools I applied to except my own school here in Canada - the waiting game is no longer fun!!
purpledinosaur Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 (edited) Finally got my Columbia interview notification! I was also woken up by firefighters stomping into my apartment because of a fire next door, so it's been an interesting day already... Edited February 29, 2012 by purpledinosaur
Karajan Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Finally got my Columbia interview notification! Huzzah!

Yep, applied there for theory but my UT app wasn't my best (hadn't finished my thesis yet / the UT application system is confusing as hell) so I've sorta been writing that one off. Haven't heard back though, if that makes you feel any better.
airmusic Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Hi all! I'm glad to know that I'm not alone in the impatient waiting-by-mailbox-and-email-inbox game. Has anyone heard back from Maryland about ethnomusicology by chance? I had a phone interview about a month ago and haven't had any word since then.
