Linguistics 2012

Hi everyone! I have another random question. In the English department it is fairly important to be published by the time you are applying for your PhD. Is it the same in linguistics? Do masters students regularly publish/present at conferences?

Most folks don't have publications. I know one person in my cohort did, but that's hardly the norm. Conference presentations are more common, but a lot of folks come straight from undergrad so it's still not expected. If you have the chance and you have good work to present/publish, do it, but don't publish/present just to get the line on your CV. The work you make public stays with you for your whole career, so make sure you're proud of it :)

@100: I lived in College Park, MD last summer for my internship in Tenleytown (which was a faaaaar commute, but dirt cheap). However, this time around, I am definitely looking closer. In Arlington, I've found excellent apartments in the 1600-2000 price range, however, they're new and near the metro (which is a MAJOR factor for us, as we will only be taking one car). Also, our priorities are slightly different, as we're looking for 2/2s . We've also found very nice apartments near Dupont Circle (a pretty affluent neighborhood) and some near the Waterfront by the Capitol. I've mostly checked rent.com and craigslist (for an idea) and made a Google Docs spread sheet, citing prices, websites, square footage, nearest metro, and I then give it my own rating of 1-5. SO, by the time we visit DC (May), we already have a list to look at prior to settling (most apartments allow you to reserve the room through their site).

Hope this helps! PM me if you need any more help! :)

@antecedant: I was told that it was imperative to try to publish/be in the process of publishing and at least have presented at one conference. However, I'm sure that if the rest of your application is perfect, it won't matter.

I think we're all pretty aware by now of the fact that there's no such thing as a perfect application :P

Haha, true. Be that as it may, as long as the rest of your application is "strong" enough to counter not having publications, I think it's fine. I believe having an idea for a major project or what you want to work on (or a strong paper that could be published in the near future) is just as great.

I'm going to be applying to linguistics PhD programs next year. I have a MA in TESOL. Does anyone know if this is considered a "relevant degree" as master's in applied linguistics and psychology are? Thanks!

@amyjoust it's all about telling your story in your application a way which lines up your background an interests with the department's interests.

So yes, maybe a MA in TESOL might be most applicable for an Applied Linguistics, but you can likely tell your story in a way that can get you places :)

Might as well mention here that I'm going to MIT next year. I'm pretty stoked :)

@ Triple Tall Cappuccino - Congratulations on Georgetown! Did any of the programs you were accepted to offer you funding? If so, how much?

Hi, Amy! Thanks! :) Yes, all of the programs accepted me with full 5 years of funding. If you want, PM me and I'll let you know!

As for all the other acceptances (MIT and such), congrats!!!!

Hi,

I've been lurking around here for a while but finally I decided to register. Congrats to everyone on the acceptances!

@funology and @radiowires: It seems we are going to be classmates at MIT (or whatever people in the same cohort are called :)). Did you go to Open House? Unfortunately, I couldn't go. What was it like (if you were there)?

@funology: You're a phonologist I guess? Just based on your name...

@radiowires: What is your specialisation?
