runn Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 I never realized just how many junk phone calls and emails I really get until I started applying to grad school. THIS. I still get emails I thought I had unsubscribed from. Every time I hear that *ding* I check my inbox in a panic, only to find that Old Navy has a deal on pants this week. I shake my fist, calm myself down, and go buy some pants at Old Navy, because that actually looked like a pretty good deal. And it JUST HAPPENED AGAIN while writing this post. Argh. Haroun 1
musicmage09 Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 I never realized just how many junk phone calls and emails I really get until I started applying to grad school. I got a call from a car warranty scam company that had the same area code as one of my schools. I almost had a heart attack....and then they told me my cars warranty was about to run out....my car is 15 years old....
CP3 Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Also, after I got the telemarketing call, I drove to the bank to deposit a check. While I was waiting in line, some older gentleman and his son in front of me told the bank teller "I need to transfer 100 dollars for an application, my son was just accepted by blah blah blah University today for vocals..." REALLY!? I mean, it looked like a high school kid, so being accepted to an undergrad is easy, but still, it was a harsh reminder, needless to say:(
hiroshiman Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Is the Stanford admit around here? I'd love to hear from you if you are, and congrats!
musichistorygeek Posted February 6, 2013 Author Posted February 6, 2013 Looks like we've got some good musicology/theory/ethno news around here in the last day or so. Congrats!
SafSam Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 This may sound like a dumb question, but oh well -- if you see in the search results that people are already getting rejections or acceptances from programs you applied to, and you haven't heard anything, is that a good or a bad thing?
hiroshiman Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 This is purely conjecture on my part, but from what I've seen in other forums it could mean you're on an unofficial wait-list. I too, have heard nothing from Stanford.
SafSam Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 For some reason I've been getting inundated with telemarketer calls-- soo annoying. Every time my phone rings, I get my hopes up, only to realize it's that same place in Washington claiming that my phone bill has been turned over to collections... um, no.

Yep, terrible to get these phony phone calls right now, LAME!!!! I hope you all hear from Stanford soon, GOOD LUCK!
Counterpointer Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 I got flat out rejected by UCSB ;;; exactly 1 week after applying. Even before all the reference letters have been submitted. My guess is that it's their funding issue, the small department probably couldn't support too many non-resident, international students who can't become CA resident.. Some of my other internal colleagues report similar cases from UCSB.. I mean, if they aren't even going to consider my application because of my financial needs, they should actually refund me the app fee. After this disappointing news, it's most likely that I will go for MM music theory at Temple U or U Houston.. falling back to safety schools. comp12 1
sweetcheese Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 (edited) Just a heads up for all: I got rejected from Princeton this morning, so it looks like they're making final decisions. Thirty minutes before, however, I got an acceptance to King's College London. I suppose you win some and you lose some, and its better to happen within a small time period? Makes the cutting hurt of rejection a little less! Edited February 7, 2013 by sweetcheese

Waiting to win one...

Sorry about the reject, good luck with the rest:)
catenaires Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 waitlisted at princeton today. I guess I'm glad they didn't outright reject me, but the lack of closure and prolongation of the waiting game is a real bummer. Whatever. Look like plenty of fine people here got passed over like me

CP3 Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Man, a good amount of movement going on lately, nothing for me so far. Of course, most of my schools deadlines were in Jan, so it's going to be awhile. Congrats to all of those who are getting acceptances and interviews!
Haroun Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 ouch indeed!! Now I'll probably have to wait at least until the end of this month to hear from other schools... ahhh
