2013 Applicants: Post Your Work

Wow, totally in love with 'Empty House' and the hand colored prints of 'Reliquary of the Jawbone of St. Anthony'. I think that the use of religious imagery to make a statement about our relationships with history and religion within todays techno-fueled cultural mindset could be really interesting, if that is what you are going for here  though i am sure that you have some other aim as well... especially with the combination of prints in your 'altar to the gods of printmaking' where it really feels tongue in cheek.

The work looks wonderful, the recent prints being (technically) much stronger than the dear deer series,  i would love to know more about what was driving you to make the prints.   I have no doubt that you would get into one of your schools of choice. May I ask why you did not apply to University of Iowa?

Long story short for the Univ of Iowa--- my biggest factor for grad school applications was the fee for applications, and the possibility of being offered an assistantship.

I figured I'd apply to a handful of well-known/high ranking schools, a few mid-sized state schools, and a few schools that had openly approached my concentration professor about open teaching assistantships in the printmaking department.

That way I'd have a good chance at getting some good funding, and my biggest draw for any school is: a printing press, and, a great offer of funding/assistantships/scholarships/etc.

I think Univ of Iowa was on my list early on, but got bumped for a few other schools.

Your piece, altar to the gods- so moving! You have a few pieces I found incredibly moving. Excited for you and wishing you lots of good luck!

awesome.  I especially love the ones with religious/historical images.  The Reliquary of st. anthony-- i totally want one of those... i'm too broke though.  For some reason your work reminds me of Nicola Lopez, even though the subject matter is totally different.

I'm not too crazy about 11-13 though (they just don't really make sense with the rest of your work--the self portrait is pretty though).  Overall, very strong.  I'm sure you will get lots of acceptances.

Thank you all for the feedback on my work!!!

I could go into a big thing about my interest in religious art and the way it is perceived across differing cultures, throughout the passing of time, etc etc but in summary;

I am interested in playing with a satirical view of religion that makes the viewer question whether anything is truly worthy of worship and veneration.

And other things, but, that's a big part of it.

cool.  I'm super Catholic, which is the reason that I liked them (even though I knew that they were being sarcastic).  That's part of the appeal of religion to me.... that it is so ridiculous.  Catholic relics work really well for that concept because the theology about the human body is so different from other religions--even protestants.

Thank you so much! I love a good obnoxious palette! Do you have your work posted anywhere? would love to check it out! and good luck to you as well!

I don't have my work posted...One of my interviews last year, during the "open house" part of the process ppl were mentioning this forum and a long story short I'd rather post my work after the app process. Nothing bad at all,  My own preference. I'll be sure to follow though, I think you'll def get in somewhere!

I have been lurking around and thought I should share my work here as well.  I am interested in visual anthropology of African Diaspora religious traditions, with mostly photography and some film.  Here is my image library that also links to my blog:

My video interview in hosted on the blog.  Critiques are welcome.

Wow, the website is amazing. Is everything on their yours? I love anthropology. Are you applying to visual arts or anthropology? What time period(s) do you concentrate on, or is it every period, including contemporary? It sounds really exciting, i'm kind of jealous Edited by hwrios

Thank you very much for this compliment!  I hope the adcoms feel the same way.  Indeed, everything is my work, except the music.  I am applying to sociocultural anthropology.  One program, does have a strong connection to it's visual arts department.  Historically speaking, it would be from late 1700's to now, Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad, Brazil and the US.  Visually, well, anyplace I can get in a camera.

This has been a passion of mine for many years. I wish everyone good luck in following theirs!

I was debating on whether or not to comment on this post. I'm already done with one application and submitting another so be kind!

This is the project I used for my portfolio. Edited down to 20 images:

In my statement I addressed the use of b&w over color, which a MFA grad friend told me was important to do:

"Black-and-white over color film was a conscious choice with this project. I didn’t want the viewer to get caught up in the implications of the alternative/communal lifestyle presented here, as that was not what fascinated me most about this particular living situation. The black-and-white adds an element of timelessness, so that what is presented here would not be associated with something that is new and cutting edge, but a fundamental truth of human relationships."

I really dig your work. Like...alot. I think you had stronger projects conceptually on there, though. I personally love The Friendly City. I think it all depends on where you are applying and what your direction is. The more conceptual programs like Yale, SAIC or MICA might fault you for the photojournalistic figurative work/portraiture, but I know SVA, Columbia, Syracuse would probably go goo-goo over them. You are most definitely a photographer's photographer, though. And with the right program, I can't wait to see what you'll do. Good Luck.

I hail from Miami. Big ups!

p.s.

I read your statement. Go further...I think you should be asking larger questions about the "public v.s. private." Like, what does it mean to take someone's photograph or use their image for your messaging? What does it mean to do this now during a time when the truth claim of photography is being questioned? :) Be critical and skeptical of your medium.

I've just started using Viewbook so I only have a couple of works uploaded. I'll have the statements upload shortly too, so please be kind :)

I'm going for the MFA in photography btw.

Hmmm...Are you considering a career as a commercial photographer or a contemporary artist? Not that these have to necessarily be mutually exclusive, but I think you'd benefit from looking at more conceptual approaches to photography. Where did you apply?

I'm somewhat new to these forums but wanted to jump in to say hello. I love seeing everyone's work on here and wanted to post my website as well.

I'm not ready to apply just yet, but would appreciate any feedback. While I'm still in the process of researching and visiting schools, I'm aiming for one that has a strong interdisciplinary program. I want to continue drawing but explore other ways of presenting my work and see where that takes me. Good luck to everyone!

Thanks hwrios! Do you have any suggestions for which programs might be a good fit?

Thanks hwrios! Do you have any suggestions for which programs might be a good fit?

What are your goals?  To be a "gallery artist"?  To sell lots of work?  To teach?

I think that makes a huge difference.

"Fit" isn't just about your style or medium, but a lot of things.  Since you aren't applying until next year (i assume?)  you have lots of time to research.  I would have applied to a lot more schools, but I kindof waited until the last minute and didn't have much money at all for applications.  I think it's better to apply to a lot of places so you have more options.  As you can see from this forum, there are people who get interviews with Yale, but then mysteriously get rejected from lower ranked schools, so the whole process can be very subjective.

Research the profs. at schools.  Look at their work, and think about whether or not you want them to be the ones critiquing your work for 2/3 years.  Also, unless you have a lot of money already or dont mind being in debt, you should look into which schools have funding.  Some offer full tuition wavers, stipends etc. but some have little or no funding.

Also, if you are looking into a more "interdisciplinary" school ( i assume you mean multi-media?)  It seems like most schools are already heading in that direction, even if you must apply to a specific program, "painting, sculpture, etc." they still usually have a very broad definition of say painting for example, but you could look at examples of student work if you want to find out more about that.  Most schools are going to be conceptually focused anyway, except for a few "academy" type schools that would be more focused on techniques, or media.

Hi,

I am a returning student earned BFA in 2005. I mostly paints in abstract style and wonder what would be my chances in light of recent popularity of conceptual style.

ANY comment will help me to get back to the field and will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!!!

I only have a couple of things on there. I applied using my People, Places, and Things series, video, and images of a collaborative interactive performance and series of workshops with a group of nonprofit community groups.

Love your drawings. I do wish there were more (or more clear) photographs of your installations, particularly the grocery bag piece. It seems like it might have been fantastic to see in person.

Hi guys. I have so much enjoyed spending the last hour or so looking through websites! I am a bucket full of impressed. This forum holds talent! I recently graduated with a BFA in painting and I am applying this fall to multiple MFA programs. First timer.

My website is a bit all over the place right now. My portfolio wil be wildly edited down and consist (I'm thinking) of mostly my mixed media work. I am working on quite a few more mixed media paintings right now. I welcome all feedback/jokes/life advice/critique/school suggestions. I am especially interested in multidisciplinary programs and programs with good funding.
