Allouette Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 No, I don't mean your aspirations, I mean the weird dreams you've been having about grad school/rejection/getting in/your stats prof (true story. i have a worrisome number of dreams about my stats prof). The dreams people have been sharing in 'Anyone else losing their damn minds' are making me giggle more than I rightly should, and let's face it, we could all use a bad case of the giggles right now. With waiting season comes a veritable buttload of bizarre, recurring, and fantastic dreams about waiting season, so share them here and let us all laugh/cry/commiserate with your crazy subconscious! JISNEGRO Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I have been dreaming about receiving mail packages with information of interviews from the universities I applied
amlobo Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Well, I just posted this in the other forum, but here goes: I dreamed that I was religiously checking all my app status websites, and one of my top schools had changed my status from Submitted to Accepted. I thought it was a mistake, so checked my email, where I saw the congratulations email. Then, every applicant to the program showed up at my house, and the adcomm made us line up in 3 lines. It was kind of like Goldilocks... they said "the front line is too young" and then "the back line is too old"... "middle line, congratulations, you are all in." And, then I saw a gradcafe buddy in the "too young" line looking all sad, while I was happy for being 28... right in the middle! Lol. Then I woke up, and I tried to make myself go back to sleep so I could bask in the glory of an acceptance... sigh... anaZep, katieliz456 and Nausicaa 3
Platysaurus Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I dreamed that I was on a train on the way to give a conference presentation and I got a call from a POI at one of my dream universities, he asked where I was going, turns out he was on the same train, so he walked into my cabin. Then he told me that I was selected for priority placement (whatever that means) but I didn't get in, but at least that meant I was in good standing for the regular intake... then he started feeling my hair and telling me it was really smooth. And of course, suddenly the train cabin turned into my old family house and I gave my conference presentation in front of my mother and a few aunts, plus POI. Nobody really understood anything but there was good food after. Psychoanalyse that. Azarashi1, Allouette, dat_nerd and 1 other 4
biotechie Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Here is my post from the other forum: A couple of nights ago, my dream was that I had to walk to an interview at my dream school in heels through a rainforest with a machete. Then my old marching band director started yelling at the applicants. We would only make it to the next interview if we could adequately isolate mouse cells for fibroblast culture. If we couldn't do it, we got thrown out a window (which was where the incubator is in my current lab). Everyone got thrown out, and I isolated mine correctly, but couldn't find any DNase... so I broke the heel off of my shoe and got DNase for the samples. I got thrown out the window, and then they published some paper from those cells. Apparently I started working at my old school as a janitor because they took away my Master's degree (which I'm trying to finish) and shunned me from science. Weirdest dream ever. I can't figure out why in the world I would hide DNase in my heels, but I very obviously needed it in the dream.
Quantum Buckyball Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I've been having weird dreams about Canada..1. fleeing to Canada2. moving to Canada3. visiting Canada._.
viggosloof28 Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 The only one I've had was a nightmare. I dreamed that I was a couple hours late submitting one piece of my application - the adcomm was meeting that very day somehow...and they magically decided every single rejection and admission that day. I ended up getting rejected from this school, which I might have a real chance of getting into. I'm hoping things turn out rather differently in real life this/next month!
Sursie Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I've been having weird dreams about Canada.. 1. fleeing to Canada 2. moving to Canada 3. visiting Canada ._. I was having Greece dreams during the middle of last semester... I was very happy in those dreams... *sigh*
RiseofthePhoenix Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I had a dream last night in which a professor I've never met apparently thought very positive and highly of my application in a program to which I didn't apply! Nevertheles, I was stoked to hear it!
mewtoo Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 (edited) I surprisingly haven't been having any, which is weird to me. Especially since I am notorious about having nightmares about chem exams and the like. All I've been having lately is the Walking Dead-esque dreams but with monsters instead. The whole time I'm just running and trying to survive. o.O Perhaps a metaphor for the admittance process? Hahaha. Edited January 6, 2013 by mewtoo
Bearcat1 Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I've had a couple dreams about not being prepared for winter. As in, I have a hoodie and it's ten degrees and dumping snow. All my top choice programs are in places that snow, which I have no experience with, but I think it's a metaphor for feeling unprepared (or unqualified) for those programs. Maybe. Or maybe it's because hoodies are the only winter wear I own and I'm clueless about such things.
Radian Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 A dream that I often see recently is that I am having this course that I have totally forgotten about. It's the weeks (or in certain occasions the exam day itself) and I'v just learned that I have this course ! I am so frightened and afraid. I know nothing about the exam contents and have done none of the homeworks or midterms ... It's a total nightmare ! The other dream I tend to see after finals is that I have gotten a bad mark ! then I wake up and after a few moments I realize that my scores had been posted a while ago and I 'v got what I wanted ... So I get relax and go back to sleep ! I think I am loosing my mind in grad school !!!

Robin_Sparkles Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I was in a house; it began with the house being up for sale. I was bored and so I decided to peruse it since I used to go house hunting all the time with my family. Suddenly, I was in cohorts with this woman without even realizing it. She needed me to hand off a bag of meth to her. But suddenly the rather populated open house was overrun by cops and they were demanding everyone line up to be searched and they had a drug dog. The woman (who was really the bad guy in this whole thing...I was just pulled into it all) freaked out and threw the bag of meth at me and told me to get rid of it. I, not knowing how to do such a thing, locked the bedroom door and rushed to the closet where I tore the bag open and scattered it on the floor. Genius, I know. But then I realized the dog would probably smell the meth on my hands from being scattered everywhere, so I rushed into the master bathroom and began ferociously scrubbing my hands and arms, trying to get rid of any scent the drug dog may pick up. i even found clothes in a dresser to change into, while an officer was knocking on the door, telling me I had to come out and join the group. Confident I would be easily passed over for my innocence, I casually strolled over and made some weak excuse about why it had taken me so long to join. The drug dog and I made eyes. He gave a sniff and seemed disinterested. A cop smiled at me. Breathing a sigh of relief, I began making idiotic small talk with the officers- explaining the idiocy of drugs and the people who deal with them, etc etc. Suddenly, the dog began to nom on my fingers. It didn't particularly hurt, just a lot of licking with a few soft nibbles. "Heh heh..., he's a friendly guy", I say. "No", they say. "He's eating the meth off your fingers. You are under arrest. My heart began to race and I tried to say anything (and everything) that would get me off the hook. But the real bad drug lady had made a deal with them and falsely placed the blame on me! Suddenly, all of the officers had to leave...I don't remember why. Perhaps they had to finish some very important paperwork...or eat a doughnut. I realized that my future was hanging in the balance. If I couldn't get out of this, I would never get into grad school. I had to get into grad school. If I didn't go to grad school, my life would be ruined! (It wasn't the drugs or the jail or the general unfortunate luck that would ruin it...it was the whole taking away my grad school opportunities that ruined my life...because that's logic). So. I orchestrated an escape plan. I found a way out of the house and rushed to a neighboring home where an elderly woman was sitting outside. I made up an excuse, saying some meth-head was after me and begged her to drive me somewhere, anywhere, that I could hide. She agreed, but the driver's door wouldn't stay shut on its own while driving so I had to hold it from behind her, desperately trying to keep it closed. But she was old and wasn't staying on the road very well; she wanted to pull off. But I could see cop cars behind her and I begged for her to keep driving- my future depended on it! The cops caught up with us, ripped open the door and found me huddled in the back seat. "But...grad school! I have to go to grad school! Don't take away my future, I didn't do anything wrong!" So. That's one of my dreams. TeaGirl and mewtoo 2
DropTheBase Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Riding a bicycle around my neighborhood on a sunny day. When's the last time any of us had the time to do that?
VBD Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 I had a dream a few days ago that I was sitting in front of my computer checking my email and in came three emails from my top three schools for interview offers. Next thing I know, I wake up, and I'm in my bed. I had no choice but to laugh it off, curse my overactive brain, and go back to sleep. Dropthebase, that sounds wonderful. Here, it's all snow and grey. xD
Robin_Sparkles Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Apparently my dear friend (who is also applying to grad school) had a dream where he could read my email and I had received an acceptance, but he couldn't see to where! I'm going to take this as a good sign, methinks.
nohika Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 I was at first like hah! Them crazies and their dreams. I'm not there /yet/. ...last night and the night before. I keep dreaming about getting emails. Some I can't read, some are clearly "yay! YOU GET TO GO!" and I don't know wtf is going on, but it's very disorienting to dream about getting emails and not actually get them. So schools! Read my brain and send me those acceptances!
cleverfool Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 I woke up this morning having dreamed of interview at Cornell, which is apparently on my undergrad campus, and every interviewer asked for a copy of my resume. Of course, I couldn't find them, so they asked me to describe my work experience. When I started talking about my job (in pharma), they just started laughing hysterically.Of course, in all my real-life job interviews, not one person has asked for a resume (they already had it, for the most part), but I always came with several copies...
damequixote Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 I haven't yet had any admissions dreams, but I really want to thank OP for this super awesome thread. Makes my day

I have these email dreams, then wake up and look for them on my phone. In the midst of what is now real panic because the emails have gone missing, I finally become coherent enough to realize it was a dream. But at this point I'm all worked up and can't get back to sleep so I just lie there and stress some more.
Radian Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 haha ... yeah when I was applying for my masters two years ago I used to be the same way... I did put so many alarms on every electronic device I could fine to make a noise when I receive an email. You may not believe it but I worked 2 times for me I mean I got this noise, jumped behind my computer and saw the admission offer email. But this time ... bouuuuu ... BORING ... I don't even remember my username and password to the status page ) ...
Allouette Posted January 9, 2013 Author Posted January 9, 2013 Last night I dreamed I got an email from a university called 'Century University' in Upper Manhattan (because that's totally a real place) and they were all 'we were going to wait until March to send out acceptances, but your references were SO GOOD that we wanted you in first'. Then they sent me a clip from one of my LORs and it was 'She's sweet as roses, clearly skilled'. Which is a terribly odd thing to write in a reference, I think. Especially since I can't imagine my gruff, manly-anthropologist (manthropologist?) prof calling anyone 'sweet as roses'. Bearcat1 and Haroun 2
