Megeen Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Well, there goes UNC Chapel Hill... At least they didn't take days to get the word out, and the message felt classy as far as rejections go.
Horb Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 And yes, Horb, but at least you have an amazing opportunity! Tufts is an amazing prize to receive from this dreadful process. The end for me, however, is looking foreboding. I'm really excited. I didn't know any of the ranks of the programs I applied to when I applied and realizing all of them were top 50 was terrifying. I'm very happy to have been accepted at Tufts. I can't wait to get the official funding package and everything.
gatsbysghost Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 (edited) I loved the food in England. What was wrong with it? (I think I'm just meant to live there though...) Well, speaking as an American, here's everything that I find to be wrong with English food (in my opinion; your mileage may vary). And please bear in mind that I love England (and the whole UK) and I feel incredibly lucky to be here! I just wish they would follow the U.S.'s lead with food. Or Sweden's. Or Belgium's. ...or, really, anywhere on the Continent. 1) Nobody puts enough seasoning in anything--especially salt. So everything from vegetables to pasties to pasta is utterly bland. You can salt things that don't have enough salt, but you can't make up for unseasoned or poorly-seasoned food (though, in fairness, the English do try to make up for this; usually by adding lots of onions, which I despise). 2) All food is more expensive here. You can't get a hamburger for less than about eight dollars, and that's from a food truck or cart; in any cafe or restaurant, a burger is usually about ten dollars. And they are always overdone. Which brings me to number 3: 3) British people have no understanding of grilling. I've been invited to "barbecues" here in Cambridge, which are disgraceful shams to anyone from the civilized world. People bring tinfoil tubs, which they fill with charcoal briquettes (because no-one owns a grill here). Then, because British people lack something which I'm choosing to call the Griller Instinct (it's a pun! ...), they overcook one side of everything and leave the other side raw. 4) There is no British equivalent of Panera Bread. Actually, there's no restaurant which is healthy, quick, and inexpensive-ish--at least, none that I've been able to find. For any food here, you can usually pick one or two of those attributes--never all three. Edited February 17, 2014 by gatsbysghost

This. I found the majority of things to be terribly underseasoned. Or overcooked (they almost ruined duck for me). gatsbysghost 1
MsWuff12 Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Didn't apply to UT, but I did apply to UVA and also have not heard anything. Even if an acceptance isn't forthcoming (though, let's hope it is!), it's good to know we at least made it past that first round of cuts, right? Got to look for those silver linings.... I'd take that as a good sign bc I was denied from UVA last week. No news is good news!

Horb Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 I studied at Oxford. The Alt Tuck shop just around the corner was amazing. I nearly died. I agree it is overpriced, but the food I had was always very good. Perhaps it is because I myself only ever cook with salt and pepper (some times cayenne) and therefore don't mind. I'm a meat and potatoes person, so that doesn't hurt either wreckofthehope 1
Strong Flat White Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 I stand utterly corrected re: CU Boulder. Had no clue they'd do this this early, and was explicitly told otherwise. Sorry, all. If anyone's considering the unfunded MA, however, I'd be more than happy to chat. Fiz 1
Horb Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 I am extremely impatient today. I really want to hear from UVA. . .

c897 Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Last year, Columbia notified on President's Day. I wish they would again.

toasterazzi Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 This. I found the majority of things to be terribly underseasoned. Or overcooked (they almost ruined duck for me). The lack of seasoning would make me so unhappy. I mean, I still want to go there one day, but that'd be a sad food experience. I love flavors and seasonings. And not just salt and pepper either. Garlic, onion, chili powder, cumin, allspice, oregano, basil, curry, various peppers, thyme... See now I'm hungry... purpleperson 1
Nyctophile Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Is it weird to think we could hear back from almost all of our schools between this week and next? Then it is over. Completely over. Cannot handle this. yes. feeling this right now.

shortstack51 Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Haha had a heart attack upon seeing an email from UNC Chapel Hill! It was a rejection though. Lol. It was a very nice email, at least they are considerate. And thanks for the good vibes shortstack!! I hope it works. And it's so funny, we're the opposite, I would die to live in NYC! It's been my dream forever. I love the city. I have a love-hate relationship. I like it a lot better now that I live in a small city outside of the city, but it still gives me the grumps when I commute in for work on the train. It always smells like pee and crap and garbage. But there's a lot to love. I'll be happy enough living here again. I just get tired of hearing gunshots. It doesn't happen that often since I moved (once a month?), but it's definitely not fun when it does. I also grew up in the mountains, so I'm certainly biased. These CUNY acceptances are making me nuts! I'll go check the CUNY thread I guess.
Tweedledumb Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I got my first acceptance tonight -- Southern Illinois -- and I'm just insanely happy to have an offer. I had pretty much given up hope, and even though it's not my top choice, it's still a choice and I'm happy to have it. Don't give up just yet everyone who hasn't heard good news; your offer can still come! practical cat, toasterazzi, school_of_caliban and 8 others 11

WendyWonderland Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Hey guys, does anyone knows something about Loyola Marymount university ? They have a English literature MA program and my friend told me to apply since ddl is very late. I already have a MA but chances seems bad this year. I think I would apply to some lower rankings and late ddl this weekend. Any recommendations?
