Marcus_Tullius Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Petros-- Seems a lot of programs are early. (I didn't apply to UGA, though. Sorry for no news.) Marcus_Tullius-- According to previous UT-A data on the results search, it does look like they usually accept everyone at once, however this is quite early for them. Don't completely discount yourself before you have direct word from the school one way or another, but in this case no news is probably not good news. . I emailed my POI, who says there will be campus visit invites for interviews, and unofficially told me that I've got one. So there is more to come from UT Austin I think. Conscia Fati and ΧΕΛΩΝΗ 2

RomulusAugustulus Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Congrats to everyone getting good news! I'm not really applying to Classics, doing ancient art history instead, and it is dead silent over there (at least from my schools). I was wondering though, if the person who got invited for an interview for Columbia, Classical Studies, could let us know (either anonymously on the results search or here, if you feel comfortable) who you heard from? Were you contacted by the DGS or a POI? And if it was a POI (and you don't mind sharing), who was it? Just trying to judge whether all interview requests are out, or if there is still hope. Thanks!
actual_entity Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 (edited) hi, that's me! i heard from katja vogt, who heads the classical studies program. i know that applications for that program are handled separately from the classics department applications, and i am an international applicant--they may have a different procedure for domestic applicants. bearing all that in mind, and seeing as mine is the only report up so far, i wouldn't give up hope yet. Conscia Fati Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 actual_entity, congrats on your interview, and best of luck!
ScipioAfricanus Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 (edited) Hey guys and gals! First time finally posting. I'm currently at Columbia as a MA student in Classical Studies. Have a relatively strong application laking German experience but still have decent Italian and have been doing the Latin survey and taking Graduate Greek courses to build on my undergrad. I applied to U of M's Interdepartmental Program in Greek and Roman History this round... has anyone heard anything from them yet? Is there an appropriate way to inquire about the status of an application with your POI? Edited January 28, 2014 by ScipioAfricanus
Statianus Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 It's a stressful time for everyone here. I think the best course of action is patience and waiting.
kingharvest Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 (edited) I have a lot of strong connections at Columbia, I'm surprised I didn't at least get an interview for Classical Studies. Edited January 28, 2014 by kingharvest
ScipioAfricanus Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 (edited) Sorry that you haven't gotten an interview yet! Maybe only the international students were officially invited to prospective students week so far? The students in the program aren't told much (obviously) but I wish I could get you more info! And of course I understand it is a stressful time, in fact I only inquired out of curiosity and based on the praise that everyone gave the person who got in at UT at A since they received a positive response from the POI. Figured it was worth a shot since my fiancé received a job offer here in NJ that she needs to accept/reject soon and it would be an acceptable reason to ask so we don't get screwed come March or April Edited January 28, 2014 by ScipioAfricanus
RomulusAugustulus Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 (edited) actual_entity, thanks for the info and congrats and good luck on your interview. I applied to Classical Studies as well, so I'll hope (for me and you, kingharvest) that they haven't sent out all requests. Scipio, I don't know much about the IPGRH program, but from the results search it looks like they don't start sending anything out until February. I would wait another week or two, and then if your fiance really needs to decide on her job, email/call the department and ask if it's possible they could let you know if they've made a decision. I know Michigan also sends rejections by snail-mail (ouch), so it can take a while to get those (though, of course, I hope this doesn't happen to you). Edited January 28, 2014 by RomulusAugustulus
samyraeus Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 I see in the results page that someone posted they were accepted into Princeton on the day that the interview notifications went out. Does anyone know if Princeton has sent out some acceptances as well as interviews? Is this common?
ciistai Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Hi all - a lurker from last year's application season deciding to pipe up for a minute - for those waiting to hear from UT Austin, do keep an eye on your application status and on the results board... last year when I was applying, acceptances and rejections were being posted all over the board, but I heard not a peep from them... turns out they had put me on a wait list but didn't bother tell me! By the last day of March they still hadn't updated me. I didn't end up going anyway (obviously) as I got funding elsewhere, but for those of you who are unsure about them, I'd recommend emailing sooner rather than later if you're feeling anxious and want to check up on things. Although I'd agree that it's still very early! But, as a very anxious person myself, I thought it might be good to point this out to those who've brought it up. Serenus and Conscia Fati 2
Posidonia Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Hi all! I'm new to GradCafe and just discovered this thread, and thought I would join as I have also applied to doctoral programs in Classics beginning fall 2014. Samyraeus: In response to your question about Princeton, it can't have been a notification of acceptance (from Classics at least). They do not communicate final decisions before the end (or near the end) of February. Good luck to all! ΧΕΛΩΝΗ 1

I spoke with someone from UT Austin last night on the phone. Apparently they will be emailing people on the shortlist tomorrow. I do not know if this is the whole of classics or just the archaeology part. Serenus 1
janeiro Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Well looks like Stanford's results are out. I was waitlisted. There's still hope! Serenus and Furcifera 2
Serenus Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Hi, all. New poster here. Chimed in to say that I received a call from U. Cincinnati yesterday offering to fly me out for their prospective graduate student weekend in late February. The professor who called me specifically said it wasn't an interview, but more of a visit to see if everything meshed well. It's a 3 day visit...does anyone know what I can expect from them at this non-interview? Also, did anyone receive a notification for a more formal interview? Thanks! Serenus 1

I got a similar offer - they offered me up to $500 towards flights, although that may not be enough since I'm international, so they've said that if I can't make it we can do a skype interview. I asked the person who sent the email which he felt was more beneficial in terms of securing an admission, and he said much the same - that attendance at the weekend would not make a difference...it's a difficult one. What's your area of interest? Are you another bronze age person? There's too few of us...
BTKOU Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I also received an email inviting me for a prospective student visit. The professor who emailed me specifically mentioned what professors I would meet with for an interview. I am from the US so I am certainly going to attend. Marcus Tullius, I do Classical Archaeology, but I'm sure I will get my fair share of Aegean bronze age if I am admitted.

Interesting - I guess the difference is due to US vs international - I've had no word as to who i'd speak to, simply them asking whether I want to go, or do a skype interview instead. Classical stuff is cool, although I'm very interdisciplinary - I don't like the division between Classical and Prehistoric (or history and archaeology for that matter) - for me the bottom line is that whatever period of antiquity you study, you need to know Latn/Greek and understand how your chosen period relates into others.

I couldn't agree more...just referring to the track that I would take at Cincinnati. Based on your prior post it looks like we were informed by different professors.

Serenus Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Hmm! The professor who contacted me from Cincinnati wasn't one that I'd necessarily imagined working with, although his work is fascinating. I'm interested in ancient medicine and the history of science; my honors thesis focused on the reception of a 2nd century medical text in the Renaissance. I'm also involved in paleoethnobotany, and have had some experience on plant digs. I wasn't told about any specific professors, but just asked if I'd like to attend (which I will- I'm pretty near). During the phone call, he told me he was very excited about my application and that I was on the shortlist. He also discussed my potential salary. That's probably what we all heard, though?
