FreeRadical Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 (edited) Congrats everyone. I'm still waiting on 5 out of 6 PhD programs in epidemiology. It sounds like master's programs are decided first. For my part, the University of Washington deadline was December 15 and I got notified about being waitlisted on February 5. The rest of the schools' deadlines (in my signature) were either December 1 or 15, except for UIC which was February 1. Question for Johns Hopkins applicants: What's the deal with the phone interview? This website says that interviews aren't required, but... "an interview may be required prior to an admissions decision." The Grad Cafe results page shows that several people had phone interviews in the last 2 weeks. Can you tell if it's supposed to help them decide about people on the fence, or is it to make more solid plans with their top applicants? Edited February 10, 2014 by FreeRadical
sharonnyc Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Hey FreeRadical, welcome to the epi PhD waiting game... It is definitely not fun! Congrats everyone. I'm still waiting on 5 out of 6 PhD programs in epidemiology. Seems like master's programs are decided first. For my part, the University of Washington deadline was December 15 and I got notified about being waitlisted on February 5. The rest of the schools' deadlines (in my signature) were either December 1 or 15, except for UIC which was February 1. People have been reporting rejections from Michigan and Johns Hopkins in the last two weeks. So far so good...

123hardasABC Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 Emory's admit package is a leather-bound notepad. I almost feel bad for turning them down.

faithfullywaiting Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 Just heard from UW---I'm also wait-listed. And I also checked Johns Hopkins admission website out of impatience and found out about my rejection :/ One more school to hear from. Accepted: 1/6 Waitlisted: 1/6 Rejected: 3/6
GradSchooler Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 Has anyone heard from BU's MS in health services research program? I saw some phd results come out on the results search but no masters.
kbui Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 Typically the emails come from webadmit.org - it's an organization that sends out acceptance/rejection/waitlist emails for schools and all the email addresses are "donotreply@webadmit.org". Afterwards I've been getting some personal emails from admissions officers/heads of departments/faculty/potential advisors/students and those necessitate some response (and a thank you!). Oh, I didn't realize that we should email back to say thank you. Should I do that now? Is it necessary?
wiggy1325 Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 New to this site, this is awesome! Congrats to those that have gotten accepted. I'm still waiting because my apps got out about a month later than they should have. Any applicants to: Saint Louis University IUPUI San Diego State Texas-Austin Iowa UIC I'd love to chat! Good luck to everyone
Jokenberry Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 Received an invitation to interview (yesterday by phone) with USC. Hardly even an interview, really, more like a telephonic meet & greet with the program director. Went really, really well.

Good luck to everyone I applied and was accepted to both UIC and Iowa. I visited Iowa - they have a GORGEOUS new school of public health and incredibly friendly faculty and students. Jokenberry 1
KennedyAM Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 Sister was admitted to NYU (NYU - International & Community Health) I was admitted to UT-Houston (Healthcare Management)

I'm still waiting on my admission decision to be given but hoping for the best obviously. Are you going to attend one of those? And what's your concentration?

I'm still waiting on my admission decision to be given but hoping for the best obviously. Are you going to attend one of those? And what's your concentration? I did not visit UIC nor will be attending - they were a safety school for me and, since I work in the Chicago area, I planned to visit post-acceptance had I not gotten into my top choice. I am attending UMichigan for Hospital and Molecular Epidemiology. There's a small part of me still holding out for Iowa, since they have a training grant that covers tuition and gives a living stipend, but Michigan is just a better fit for what I want to concentrate in (antibiotic resistance).
Celestina Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 I have accepted by Emory and Tulane for epidemiology of master degree. Emory give me the offer in Feb.7th. It takes a long time. I think Emory is good because CDC is near that school so that It is a great opportunity for me to find a suitable job. Although I am waiting for other universities' notifications, I feel very satisfication and excited with Emory's acception.
FreeRadical Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 It's February 13 and I'm still in that awkward no-acceptances-no-rejections phase. Wait list at UW, and interviews at Michigan and BU.
mittensmitten895 Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 Has anyone heard if the Epidemiologic Methods interview notices and/or acceptances have gone out for the Harvard Epidemiology ScD already? (Feel free to PM me if you'd rather not announce it to the whole world but feel okay telling one stranger.) I'm nearly certain I won't get an invite, but I'm waffling about whether I should bother meeting the priority financial aid deadline. Honestly, the thought of having to fill out another FAFSA makes me ill.

Based on Grad Cafe results from previous years, I'd expect to hear something not long after February 15. Maybe they just don't want to ruin people's Valentine's Day! I'd do the FAFSA before the deadline because they really are more likely to give you financial aid. If you don't care about financial aid, well, that's a different story
sharonnyc Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 I haven't heard anything either -- it doesn't seem that they do interviews. The FAFSA isn't so bad, as long as you did your taxes last year - it only took me about 15 minutes, I just had to look up results from a few different lines and my bank account balances. If you don't care about financial aid, well, that's a different story I guess I'm a little confused as to why we need the FAFSA at all -- is aid need-based for the ScD? That seems... crazy. My other offers have been completely independent of need, and I would not consider accepting loans for a PhD. I do not qualify for any "quirky" scholarships for things like graduating from a big donor's high school, living in a specific county, etc, so I just wonder whether it would even make a difference. It seems more applicable for those who are considering doing partially funded master's degrees.
sharonnyc Posted February 13, 2014 Posted February 13, 2014 It seems that some of the scholarships are meant specifically for people whose parents earned little money, or are from famillies where people haven't gone to college (so for instance they ask if you were eligible for a Pell grant in college)... So that's probably why they want the FAFSA I guess I'm a little confused as to why we need the FAFSA at all -- is aid need-based for the ScD? That seems... crazy. I didn't think I would qualify for any scholarships either, but there was actually one for people doing work related to the environment. I'm applying for the environmental epidemiology concentration, so I thought I'd give it a shot. You might be surprised. It's not only rich people and secret societies giving the scholarships (although there is plenty of that).

It's not only rich people and secret societies giving the scholarships (although there is plenty of that). Sorry -- I didn't mean to sound dismissive! I meant that I reviewed the list of research/discipline-oriented awards and found that none applied to me, and I also couldn't honestly check any of the niche boxes (some of which are very strange indeed). Since this is a huge multi-year commitment for the applicants, I just feel like it should be more... dignified, maybe? It seems uncomfortably risky for the funding situation to be so in flux that we have to rely on scholarships instead of funding arrangements such as training grants. None of the other schools I applied to (including another department at Harvard) asked me to apply for aid before hearing back about admission, and it seems like it would end up being a waste of time for most applicants since the vast majority get rejected. Anyway, it sounds like the Epi Methods offers have not gone out yet, so I may as well just fill out the FAFSA and be done with it. Best of luck to all of you!

Ah, of course you would have checked the list. I misread your post. It is pretty strange that the priority deadline is before the first acceptance letters go out. But then again it's only an extra burden for the applicants, and it makes things easier for the admissions office. I guess you can do that if you're Harvard and have plenty of people begging to get into your school.
