I like to bike. And apparently if you say it exactly like that during the "tell us something about yourself sessions," people tend to think you're a sore loser with no life other than pedaling around the block.

I wouldn't think so! Maybe that's because biking culture is huge where I live. If you're a biker you're cool here haha. Too many hills for me and the drivers and pedestrians are insane.

yea, it's probably because people around here are too hung up with their pickup trucks than to realize that cycling actually exists.

I'd like to go shooting someday, but I heard it's expensive, like $50 at a time for the weapon, bullets, and the range itself.

Since this isn't the "other intellectual pursuits" thread, I'll be honest. I love to drink. I'm a regular at the local bar. That's pretty much it. If I get some free time I love to go to the local watering hole and get sauced. It's an excellent break from the daily grind. Academics tend to be boring, uptight, obsessive, and have little to no social skills. I like mingling with the natives during the late evenings. They're fun folk.

I'm in two book groups, and read a lot.

I also watch a lot of TV shows. My boyfriend and I spend a lot of time watching Netflix, and we both love good storytelling. So we tend to get really wrapped up in a series together, and speed through like 5 seasons in a month. It's kind of our unwinding activity.

Also yoga, like any good New Yorker.

I play a couple instruments and listen to a lot of music too. I'm also big on film. I guess a lot of my downtime is actually spent at coffeeshops reading things for fun and just relaxing.

My S.O. & I go shooting when it's warmer out. I like to experiment in the kitchen, hike, enjoy adult beverages (hooray, MT! We've got breweries!) & explore public lands around me. Time, weather, & money permitting, whitewater kayaking, snowboarding, & fishing are on the list, too. I'm hoping to get a student hunting & fishing license for next year so I can get better at flyfishing & hunting, including filleting, dressing, butchering, & smoking meat. I worked on a farm for a while, so once I'm living a more settled life, I'd like to have a few animals & crops. I like to build stuff, but I don't have to time or money to join a makerspace.. I'm not sure what I'd make anyhow! I move too much to invest in welding or carpentry. In general, I'm really interested in backwoodsy stuff & self sufficiency.

Also, I'm always expanding my collection of medical oddities, bones (only animals, for now; taxidermy & humans one day!), & art (lots of tattoos-to-be & skulls). I have a soft spot for the slightly macabre, especially art that incorporates elements of life & conventional beauty with elements of death. It comes with the mortuary archaeology territory, I suppose. :P

I want to learn how to build stuff :)  I'm planning to (in the not-so-near future) build one of those tiny, 200 sq ft houses. I don't know how though... Any ideas on where I can take classes or learn where to start?

If you're in or near a city, try googling "(city's name)" + "makerspace": makerspaces are wonderful! They provide software, "hardware" (tools), a workspace, & knowledgeable staff that can help you from the initial design steps through the finishing touches of a project. My local one apparently offers a 3D printer, a lathe, a laser scanner, a vinyl cutter… among many other things. Your projects will be limited by what they can offer, but joining a makerspace is well worth the money. :D I've mostly managed to get myself into situations where I either have to learn how to make something, or I'm surrounded by people who are super knowledgeable & friendly. So, besides makerspaces... work for the Forest Service or as an outdoor trip guide?

Same weird hobbies! My apartment is spotless, and the alley cats are fat and happy.

Cool! I'll have to give it a try. Thanks for the advice.

In our department of cyclists, you'd be normal. I am only abnormal as a cyclist because I am the lone female in the department on a bike who actually calls herself a "cyclist".  We are in a very bike-centric place, though.  I like working out but prefer to be outdoors.  In the winter, I Spin.  Hate riding indoors but I deal.

I love beer and wine.  I grew up making wine.  I made my first carboy when I was probably 7 or so (obviously with my Dad's help but it was "mine") and my BF brews.  We love craft beer and taste new stuff every chance we get.

I'm actually building a tiny house right now. There are actually workshops about building tiny houses put on by many of the professional companies that build them. I used to work in construction so I came up with my own plans and am doing it all based on what I already know. I'm currently working on a blog/website about it, so I can add the link in the very near future if you're interested.

As for my hobbies, I'm interested in building things(see above), music, as well as cooking, canning, and reading. Last year I set myself a goal of reading 52 books and actually surpassed it, making it to 60. Of course, this year I'm working on building my tiny house and will be attending grad school in the fall, so I don't anticipate getting anywhere close to that number in 2014.

Another shooter here.

Also, I like to take my Jeep offroad, sleep (I work nights, so sleep is MIA most of the time), travel, go to the beach, go out for dinner/drinks with friends, etc. I don't have a whole lot of spare time these days.

I used to make jewelry, and I'd like to start making it again, but I don't have much time or money.

I would like to start making zines too.
