slpslidingaway Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Now that we're halfway through September and most of us are ready or getting ready to settle back into the school routine, I thought it would be good to have a thread where we can give and get support, complain about CSDCAS, chat about anything related (or not related) to applying to grad school. I know that right now all my nerves are hitting me full force about getting my application all ready by the 15th of November. My earliest application is due on December 15th, so I'm starting to get all my parts in order: getting my transcripts, asking for letters of recommendation, working on my SOP, and the GRE in October. Anyone else starting to feel the anxiety kick into overdrive?
Chandru1 Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 My main anxiety is waiting for GRE scores to post. I'm worried I read them wrong and I scored lower than what I thought I saw on the screen. Then it will be essays. I have one draft for one essay down already, but have a ways to go.
Arcanelady27 Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 My main anxiety is retaking the GRE for the 3rd time! I plan on taking it in early January. This test is not a reflection on how one does in graduate school. I just wish schools did not place so much emphasis on this test! spedtospeech and SandS2009 2
onedayslp Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Can't believe CSDCAS is finally open! Those deadlines are going to start creeping up really fast. When is everyone planning to request recommendation letters? I was thinking beginning of November... since I want to have a draft of my SOP done by then. Would this be too late since it's only about a month before some deadlines? @PorqueMoi: I snagged your signature format, hope you don't mind
kumapanda Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Do you think my GRE is decent enough? Both are over 50th percentile, so I thought I would have a decent chance if I can spice up my personal statement and resume.

slpslidingaway Posted September 18, 2014 Author Posted September 18, 2014 I've already requested one letter from a class I did well in and I plan on requesting the others within the first two weeks of being back in classes (we start on September 29th). I've been drafting my SOP and studying for the GRE as well. And on top of classes? I predict that I'll be drinking lots of calming, relaxing tea this quarter. With whiskey. @onedayslp, feel free to steal it away!

combustiblecake Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 God, I'm so nervous about applying, because it's only the beginning of anxiety attacks of whether I get in or not. At the same time, I'm pretty excited because I know exactly what to do. Either way, I have several variations of plan B that I'm also excited to pursue. I want to work in Early Intervention and with children with all kinds of backgrounds. I also want to pursue research, however I'm thinking that I'll go into clinical Master's and just do a research project on the side. Is anyone doing a PhD? I'm still deciding this.
anslpaday Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 So it begins! I've been working diligently on my SOP, and will ask for recommendations once I have a solid draft of that going - perhaps in a couple of weeks. I have a general idea of where I'm going to apply to, but still have a couple of schools in the 'maybe' category. Probably need to decide that sooner rather than later! @PorqueMoi you're from Portland! Fun seeing someone from my neck of the woods.
kumapanda Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 When asking people to write letter of recommendations, how many are they willing to write? I know that asking people to write 15 letters of rec is ridiculous, but would a number like 7 be asking too much?
Sophia Petrillo Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 When asking people to write letter of recommendations, how many are they willing to write? I know that asking people to write 15 letters of rec is ridiculous, but would a number like 7 be asking too much? We are given guidelines by each person we request and that includes how many they will write. I have one professor who will only write 4 but another who will do 10. I would request the letter first and see if they give you any limit. I think it also depends on your relationship with each. Some will go the extra mile....some won't, but they also get a TON of requests this time of year. Thankfully, I only need 3, lol! kumapanda 1
onedayslp Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 @rainsonata : I was under the impression that each recommender would write one letter and send the same one to all the schools ? Or is that incorrect?
slpslidingaway Posted September 21, 2014 Author Posted September 21, 2014 I was working with the understanding that they write one general letter of recommendation, not separate ones. But I could be wrong. @anslpaday, hey there! Nice to see another PDXer around these parts.
lakegirl92 Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 Hi everyone! I had a question not sure if anyone currently goes to these schools or knows anything about them. This is my second year applying and last year I had applied to 8 schools. Two of the schools I applied to really only accepted their own undergrad speech students with occasionally one or two students from other schools. It was frustrating not knowing that and applying to those schools because it was really kind of a waste of time. I have almost narrowed it down to the schools I will be applying to, so if anyone knows about any of these schools doing the same thing I would really appreciate it. thanks!

Cal States (CSU) seem to favor their own students. I don't know about schools outside CA, but I know that some schools won't accept as many out of state students. Southeast Missouri State and Portland State told me that most of their acceptances were from in state. I think the forums have mentioned Clarion for accepting their own students, but I'm not sure how valid that is.

What are the other schools that only accept their own undergrads? I'm also concern of which schools are more biased towards instate students. I want to apply to Northern CO, Radford, Kean, Towson, and Loyola, but I'm unsure of my chances since I'm from CA. Towson and Loyola have information sessions, but I can't make it to them because I'm at the other side of the country CSULB definitely only accepts their own students. I believe the number was 19/23 were CSULB undergrads. Something like that. It's because of that I think CSULB might be my best bet (but I rather go out of state).
rlywrmn Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Hi fellow Fall 2015 applicants! Anyone have any idea if the order you submit things in matters? I have a running checklist going of things I need for each program I'm applying to and figured it'd be easiest to send GRE scores and transcripts right away but was wondering if I should do that AFTER I actually submit the application? Thanks!
kumapanda Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 (edited) Hi fellow Fall 2015 applicants! Anyone have any idea if the order you submit things in matters? I have a running checklist going of things I need for each program I'm applying to and figured it'd be easiest to send GRE scores and transcripts right away but was wondering if I should do that AFTER I actually submit the application? Thanks! I think this varies by the person. For me, I did my GREs early when math is still fresh in my head, so I can send in my GRE scores as early as I like. However, I know that many people take their GRE in the early fall of the same semester they start applying for grad schools. If you already have your GRE scores you're satisfied with by the time application starts, I say send it in as soon as you can. The sooner you send them, the less you have to worry about forgetting to send in the scores. For transcripts, I think you should it to them as soon as you get your fall grades if you're still completing a degree. For me, my fall semester ends at mid December, so that's just in time a lot of application deadlines. The schools should be understanding about transcripts, but you can still send in earlier versions of the transcript if you're unsure about it. TL; DNR: Send things as early as you can if you already have all you need so that you won't accidentally forget them and waste money on an incomplete application. onedayslp Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 I was creeping on the forums and saw you're applying to Midwestern! I love it here That is great to hear, arthritiskid! I recently noticed that Midwestern's program just started in Fall 2013, and therefore it's not yet accredited. Is this a concern for students who attend? Or is it fairly certain that the program will achieve full accreditation? Also, is there evidence of the "newness" of the program in other respects, in terms of faculty or facilities?
imunster Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 I took my GREs this past Monday and I've barely started looking into where to apply. So far CSULA's post bacc is of interest to me but it's crazy to think that apps will be due by the end of November! Mainly just looking into post baccs and programs that offer a year to do the pre reqs seeing that I'm out of field. Does anyone know if where you went to school as an undergrad plays into admission?
caligirl002 Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 Anyone know how they calculate a second bachelor's? What if the second Bachelor's has not been conferred yet? So far, I only have an application into CSUN's distance-learning program. I'm looking at some CSDCAS schools as well, but those deadlines come a little later. I'm trying to stick with schools that will look more at the last sixty units and pre-req classes in CSD.
Chandru1 Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 Does anyone know if where you went to school as an undergrad plays into admission? I have heard informally that SFSU likes UC students, but that's the only instance I've come across. Also: I noticed you're interested in CSULA. What interests you about the program?
