I got an offer letter from NYU this morning though, PhD in EHS in their Department of Environmental Medicine. Yay! However, this was the only program I applied to that wasn't in a school of public health. That is definitely going to take away from its appeal. I am gonna have to sit down and make pro con lists between Emory and NYU. Has anyone come across good ways of doing that? I read an article that suggested listing factors that I think are important, giving them a weight, score each school out of 10 for that factor and then add up the points (after multiplication with the weight) to get a total score for each school. Any other suggestions? This is exactly what I did. I made an excel sheet with a 8 or so factors that I found important (finances/funding, location, prestige, etc.) and assigned each factor a multiplier, then gave each an score based on how I felt they all matched up (the best school getting a 10, and the rest graded lower relative to the top choice), and then let excel total the weighted scores up for me. In my case, the two schools that I was leaning towards ended up being almost tied and I feel like there is some standard deviation in arbitrarily assigning values, so the totals themselves didn't clinch it. But since I was a little disappointed at seeing which one had technically won (by one point), I realized which program I wanted. Soooo...ultimately it kinda worked? Alternatively, just choose one factor that is the MOST important to you. I think geography or finances matter the most, but I guess it's different for everyone.

Is anybody planning to go to the UNC "Experience Gillings" event for admitted students on April 1st ?! I just found out that I got accepted there! It was kind of a surprise, but I'm really happy about it!!! (Funding is a separate process) I'm looking forward to get to know the school and the program a little bit better. The website says you are supposed to make your own arrangements for travel and lodging though... Any thoughts?! I plan on attending. Luckily I have a friend that lives in the area I can crash with. Have you decided to go?

Ill ask them about the letter if I don't receive it before then.. The department 'would like to know' my decision by March 24th apparently.. I need to have an answer soon I guess.. Did the Public Health school ask you something similar?

Yeah I have the same deadline because my program is also through the environmental medicine department, but all my classes/professors I would work with primarily are in Manhattan! I guess I'll email them if I don't hear from GSAS this week. Hope you have a lovely meet up with the faculty!

anthrostudentcyn Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Can anyone give insight on typical funding packages in public health? I'm trying to evaluate my offer against the standard. Feel free to PM! calilife 1

Two offers I got mentioned TA/RA in exchange for tuition and stipend for the first 2 years, and the department will help students secure dissertation funding for the 3rd/4th year. However, no mention of actual amount yet... Another program mentioned 4 year fellowship, but still no mention of actual amount... I wonder whether all schools would provide financial aid info before April 15th? calilife 1

I wonder whether all schools would provide financial aid info before April 15th? usually it's based on the university graduate TA or GA rate. Each school has their minimums. It helped you at least understand the minimum you would get
PHN2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Got into Hopkins PhD in International Health, Human Nutrition - only partial funding, Emory PhD in Nutritional Health Sciences - gives full funding and UMich Ann Arbor PhD in Nutritional Health Sciences - full funding. Which one to choose?
gmc5029 Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 @PHN2016 - you're welcome to send me a PM if you wanted to talk about Hopkins! PhDinPublicHealthHopeful 1
PhDinPublicHealthHopeful Posted March 10, 2016 Author Posted March 10, 2016 @PHN2016 - Choose the one that makes the most sense! If finances are tricky, it may be helpful to look at the financial picture for yourself. Where do you WANT and really feel you'll SUCCEED? I have two schools I'm debating between (if I get into both), but one definitely is stronger in my gut for the right decision for me. Funding does make a HUGE difference though! EpiHereIGo! 1
FrozenFreshMeat Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Congrats to all! Has anyone not hear back from UNC-CH? I applied for two programs this year, and got my rejection from one of them already. I assume UNC rejected me, but it's so painful just assuming!
