anthrostudentcyn
@Pink Fuzzy Bunny I didn't attach a writing sample, and so he wanted one. And then he asked me to elaborate on a few prior research experiences I mentioned. Yeah he works in my exact extremely niche field, so I guess there was some interest. But then he just said I should "ask him questions". Like dude, the only question I have is AM I ACCEPTED?

123hardasABC
So I've been given the option to start my first lab rotation in July. Is it bad that I want to accept the early start date and take an extended vacation from now to July...? I'm currently unemployed (technically) and working remotely on my thesis and a couple of side projects.
anthrostudentcyn
@Pink Fuzzy Bunny It is, but this was also my "shot in the dark" app to the one school that I knew I wouldn't get into but that is a great fit, so honestly if nothing else it's cool that someone in such a prestigious department read my discombobulated app seriously and liked it. Pink Fuzzy Bunny
This morning my e-mail was phished (an e-mail I haven't used in years) which means that everyone who has ever sent me an email (or received one from me) received porn in their inbox this morning from "me". That's right... professors, friends, family (sorry Grandma!)... I deactivated the email previously but apparently there's nothing else I can do. Every time this happens (about once or twice a year) it just reduces me to a ball of tears (I'm very quiet/shy so this is just endlessly embarrassing). I am so sorry this happened to you. I had a kind of awkward reading to do for my philosophy class today, and I can't get through it without blushing. Congrats on the acceptances, though! I'm an undergrad at UMich, but I don't know anything about our physics program. Is it one of your top choices?

katpillow
I'm going to lose hope on several of my apps pretty soon. I've seen too many interviews pop-up on the survey, and nary a peep. I know that some of them may simply not have been reviewed yet, but I also know many schools are guilty of not sending rejections out until well after everything's been settled. Meanwhile, I'm just trying to stay distracted with RNA extractions. I feel like: hippyscientist
hippyscientist
@katpillow I love that cartoon! It so accurately depicts my feelings right now. I'm getting really concerned now about the skype thing. I don't have an ethernet port on my laptop (thanks Apple) and can't afford their stupid attachment. Now I am reduced to wifi or finding a computer with webcam. AGH! I suppose if worst comes to worst I will have to pre-empt it. None of my professors are willing to let me use their offices (yep I asked), none of my friends have good enough internet (they're all campus wifi or stupidly slow) and it looks like I gotta shell out £40 for a piece of shit adapter that I'll only use once which means no food for 2 weeks. AGHHHH. @rosali what fancy recipes are you thinking of cooking? When I get stressed I cook...super elaborate stuff too
rhombusbombus
Got an email about "important information regarding you graduate application" and of COURSE my computer was slow as cold molasses. But I'm half-way accepted to Penn State! The department wants me so now it's up to the Graduate College to realize I'm the chosen one. hippyscientist

There's a good chance that it could have good wifi. Also, any chance you have a public library that lets you sign up to use computers? They possibly have a computer with a webcam. Also, my old university lets students check out laptops. If you have that option, maybe see if those laptops have an ethernet port? Good luck. katpillow
hippyscientist
all those options are great, but due to time differences and the fact I live in the middle of nowhere anything public is long closed by the time I need to be on skype. Think I've found a patch around though panic may have been averted. @rhombusbombus CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!! @rosali

rhombusbombus
@piglet33 Thanks so much! I want to tell everybody but i think im gonna wait until it's really real. Which should be sometime in the "near future"
rosali
@rhombusbombusCONGRATULATIONS! It's so nice to hear good news from people. @piglet33 No worries about the tagging haha. Tagging can be a little weird on here sometimes. I made chana masala and chapatis from scratch, which was surprisingly easy, but pretty time-consuming. It's really hard to find good spicy food at restaurants where I'm living, so I've been learning how to make Indian/Mexican/Ethiopian food at home. It's fun, a useful skill, and a great way to distract myself!
rosali
Also, @Pink Fuzzy Bunny that sucks so much! If it helps, phishing is a pretty common occurrence, so I'm sure everyone understands. I'm also pretty shy, and agonize over every word of every email I send, so I can imagine how terrible it must feel to be phished!
Katastrophe
I think I'm going crazy waiting! Worst part is, the application notification season is just starting and my friends and family are already so sick of hearing me stress. If they think I'm bad now, wait till they see me in April! rhombusbombus and CartesianCarolyn
Foreveronward
@piglet33 have you tried asking your university tech dept or library if they have an adapter you can borrow? My university library does one week loans of stuff like tablets, microphones, adapters, etc. Wouldn't hurt to ask!
polarimetric
I swear, if I get one more email that says it's from "Office of Admissions," get really excited/nervous, and open it to discover it's a solicitation email inviting me to apply to some MA program in a totally unrelated field... Why did I ever sign up for the GRE search service...

rhombusbombus
Ya'll I fuuuuucccckkkkkeeeeedddd up! In my excitement about Penn State, I think I accepted their offer. The application said I had to accept the department's offer to move to the next step of the graduate college accepting it. I figured they have the final say so I could still get rejected. Apparently it's binding and now I'm scrambling to find a way to reverse it without looking ungrateful. I'm still waiting on 1 more school, have to weigh funding packages, AND still need to go to the actual recruiting weekends! FUUUUUUUUUU I'll keep you guys updated
