@PetiteFilleNoire and @NoirFemme have y'all read Racial Indigestion: Eating Bodies in the 19th Century by Kyla Wazana Tompkins? It sounds like something that would be up your alley.  She explores the ways in which depictions of eating inform the construction of racial difference and political inequality. It's a brilliant book and really worth checking out especially if you're interested in further pursuing food studies.

@cypressknee yes! I actually used that book for my writing sample, along with Vincent Woodard's The Delectable Negro.

Ooh! I haven't read Woodard's work. I just looked it up---it looks fascinating. I'm going to have to put it on my reading list!

Just got a rejection from Brown. Sad times. Has anyone had good news?

I'm in the same boat. :/ I also got a rejection from Brown this morning. The letter was pretty curt and brusque.

I'm becoming more interested in food studies, particularly as it relates to objecthood and histories of rendering Black bodies as synonymous with food. I'm especially interested in how this plays out with the use of food in pornography.

@NoirFemme You might also want to check out Williams-Forson's Building Houses out of Chicken Legs: Black Women, Food, and Power.

Thanks for the book recs! I made my way into foodways through material culture (I am a geek for early to mid-century kitchen gadgets and cookbooks), so I'm still looking around for which scholars are incorporating the rest of my interests.

I second this sentiment! So fun to share. Someone mentioned Laura Shapiro. I emailed her over the summer and geeked out hard when she wrote me back. Swoon. My Betty Crocker crush is almost all her work....

will anyone claim that gwu interview or admit.. hmm this must be a super hard year for American studies lol thank god I applied to other discplines.. wishing everyone good luck and some good news this week !!!

I can confirm for GWU - they sent me a mildly ambiguous email saying "shortlisted for admission." I think official offers are being extended after the recruitment / interview (?) event. Sounds like I got in though...

Been lurking for a bit and decided to chime in. Good luck to everyone during the rest of the season! Applied to 9 American Studies PhD programs. 4a/0r/1wl. Four schools left to hear back from (Harvard, Yale, Brown, NYU). Also got rejected to Berkeley's Ethnic Studies :(

thanks good to know where I stand unofficially with them. I tried to apply to Berkeley ethnic studies but was pushed toward African American studies by a prof in ethnic studies just to get a big rejection too.

Anyone want to shed some light on these Harvard acceptances? It's the only AmSt program I applied to -- my other applications are to history departments.

I'm in a similar boat. I applied to all History programs except for American Studies at Yale. A few weeks ago my POI at Harvard reached out and asked if he could transfer my application to American Studies because he thought I'd have a better shot there.. I took that as a good sign, but seeing those acceptance posts today without hearing anything myself was pretty deflating. I just wish they would have given more details! Were the emails unofficial ones from professors or were they from the DGS? And what about the phone call?

Anyone have any more info?

Good Luck with Harvard. I ended up not applying because I mixed up the dates. I did talk to a student there and she gave me a pretty favorable impression of the program. All but one of my non AMST programs have gotten back to me so now I am just waiting for the slow American studies programs lol.

I heard from Harvard today--waitlist. Does anyone know what the odds or the etiquette are about this? I am happy (because I only applied to two and it was a gamble) but also confused about whether I should even tell anyone.

I need a thread on the waitlist experience I think.

Has anyone heard from Yale yet?

Long time lurker here, just needing to vent a little about the metaphorical cricket sounds from admissions. I've only heard back from one school (Minnesota, rejected) out of nine and am getting progressively more obsessive with checking for updates. I'm not heartbroken about Minnesota, it was my first app and when I looked back at my submitted work it was definitely not as polished as it could've been. I'm mainly just in desperate need of just *one* AMST acceptance letter at this point to get me through the rest of the wait. Anyone else feeling this way? And/or handling it better?

P.S. Congratulations to everyone who has been getting good news back!

I've heard from heard from half of my eight schools (one waitlist, thee rejects). I totally get the desperate need for one full on acceptance. I'm handling it poorly. I'm trying to find comfort in the waitlist and trying to plan for a worst case scenario future where it doesn't pan out this year. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
