I remember a few months ago when I was searching GRE averages of various schools, I found a document (something like guidelines of phd application) written by Duke sociology department. The document mentioned they once admitted someone with both verbal and quant scores lower than 150 (if I remember correctly). They also said they had accepted someone with 3.2 (or 3.3, I forgot) gpa. runningincircles
I've been stalking all of y'all for a few weeks now. I've only applied to one program (Davis) - long story, but I'm long in the tooth, and Davis is the only place I can apply to. I just finished my MPH at Davis, and I have an MA in gender studies from the U.K. (I'm a British transplant to the U.S.) My GRE scores are o.k., but I have two very good LORs, and one reasonable LOR from my POI in the program (she provided me with a recommendation to admit). Davis hasn't got back yet, and I'm stressing pretty heavily. You guys are all extremely well accomplished with publications and great GRE's!! I have no publications, but I've been working as a GSR in public health for the past 18 months at the university, and working in public health/HIV/Non-profit sectors for a number of years. The coordinator indicated that they're still evaluating applications and that responses will be out in the next two weeks. I'm not enthusiastic about my chances, and this is really my last (of 3) attempts at trying to get into a PhD at Davis. I'm interested in the sociology of health and illness, with a focus on gender, hence the reason I'm applying to a Sociology program as opposed to Epidemiology or public health. I have a job lined up at the university if I don't get in (it's research based, so it's a good alternative), but I would love to get to do the research I'm interested in. I feel like I need some support from fellow PhD applicants within this traumatic, nail-biting wait period..I can't stand the ambiguity..it's driving me nuts!! Anyway, good luck to you all

Anyway, good luck to you all  Davis broke my damn heart right out of undergrad rejecting me--it was the only program I applied to as well! But if you're coming out of their program, they will likely favor you more (I was coming out of a state school, and Davis has a...thing...about emulating Berkeley's selectiveness). My GRE scores were awful, though, and so was my SOP for them; I'm sure you're a MUCH more qualified applicant, and coming out of MPH lines you up perfectly for your research area. Best of luck, and let us know what happens! runningincircles

I think this one may be my first rejection, just depends how long it takes them to get decisions posted online (since IUB also sent out interview requests and I didn't get one, they may beat them to the punch on my rejection). qeta
I also want to echo a lot of what has been said about rejections from grad programs and self-worth. A lot of times admission depends on the ability to send the right signals to the adcomm and not much else. Not getting in therefore doesn't mean that you're lacking in analytical ability. I am rooting for all of you to enter into great programs that you're happy with. If anyone is reapplying next year and want to chat, feel free to send me a pm either now or closer to the beginning of the next cycle. I'll be happy to read over things or just chat. KevinJHa
CUNY just sent me an email and put me on the waitlist. They also invited me to the open house next week, which I will be attending. I have a full-time job and two open houses next week (Boston & NYC) so trying to make this work will be hard. Either way, kind of disappointed but better than a rejection! If any admits know they're not going, please let them know because CUNY is my dream school  Congrats on all the acceptances guys and keep your head up. Regardless of what happens we'll all emerge from this hell stronger, and we'll be exactly where were supposed to be. Lord, I know this fact. But it seems like I'm always the exception. They can say that all they want, but being rejected for the 3rd application cycle in a row, I doubt this is true. I had a school flat out tell me once, that they won't admit me because my scores were too low. 15 hours ago, qeta said: I also want to echo a lot of what has been said about rejections from grad programs and self-worth. What would you suggest I do differently then? I don't know how else to spin my background and experience to get adcomm's to notice. It's hard not to lose self-worth when it took me so long and so much other personal issues to work through to get to this point. I'm just really emotionally drained and it just makes me question if I should I even consider doing this again. 5 hours ago, abenz said: Hey folks, it's really sweet that people are reminding everyone that we are worth more than our admissions ... it would probably be sweeter if it wasn't coming from people with those coveted admission spots already, who have the luxury of not being in that position  Thank you for saying that. It's much easier for everyone to say that now that they have acceptances.  Do you know how frustrating it is to go through this cycle more than once? Some of you have been blessed to get into a program right away. You guys don't have to go through the emotional stress the other 99% go through just to get to get in and apply over and over and over. There is that point where you just stop and re-think if it's worth it. Where I come from, it's hard enough to leave the comfort of family and your support system to pursue your dreams and then you have to do this process over and over and over. While I don't have any acceptances yet, I think its the best way to be considerate of all other applicants on this forum. I think its better than gloating about acceptances and not acknowledging the fact that so many people who didn't receive those had just as much stake in it.

But trust me, I have been at the same, if not worse, position as many others. In 2015, I, as a hopeful and young undergrad, applied to 10 sociology PhD programs and received 10 rejections. No news, no interview, no waitlist. It almost felt like there was no hope, and I suffered from anxiety and depression during that time. That is why I understand how it feels like when you associate your rejections with your self-worth. I went through months of counseling before I could pick myself back up. I applied to some sociology master's programs around their deadlines and was luckily admitted to one of the strongest MA programs in sociology with a sizable scholarship. I did not reapply in 2016 due to my coursework, but I have spent my time to contemplate on what kind of sociologist I want to become. When I reapplied this year, I told myself that even if I don't get in, I'd still have all the skills and knowledge with me, and I can always reapply when I am ready. I hope my story will help those who feel like they are failing their lives because of the rejections. Please feel free to PM me if you want someone to talk to. Edited February 7, 2018 by X.G simmel-ite
abenz
Hi, I don’t really want to continue commenting on this in much depth because everyone obviously has different stories, and the comments certainly come from a place of support and good intent, and this is certainly not meant at anyone in particular! I just feel that these comments accidentally reinforce the narrative that we, people who have been rejected or are waiting on offers, are going to be depressed or upset that we haven’t been accepted yet. Not everyone does associate their self worth with rejections, and preemptively commenting along the lines makes me feel like I’m expected to be upset ... Edited February 7, 2018 by abenz
abenz
Anyway, now that I have that off my chest, I’m going to spend a little less time on the forums while I wait on my final four schools! I’m usually around for a PM if anyone wants to catch up, and good luck to everyone still waiting on results! And congrats to those who have their acceptances! If I haven’t been rejected from a program, I assume it’s because I’m still in the running. Who knows if it’s literally true, but there’s a decent chance it is, and that helps me to be more patient with the process. This has really been helping me get through. My dream program hasn't told me anything yet. They sent out about 13 acceptances, but I have to take the silence as not a no. There will be a waitlist and there will be an answer in the future (I did call, not identify myself, and ask when they expect to notify people and they said everyone should hear something by mid-February). But holding on to "this could still happen" has been pretty crucial. Goldie
