  1. I mean that is a question only admissions can say, 30% sounds reasonable. I know of at least 4 other internationals who got my same scholarship, a couple of others who got full tuition plus 1k a semester or something, a few Americans with a full scholarship, a few Americans with in state tuition waivers, a few with in state plus a few Ks a yr. I would say average award is probably full tuition or maybe paying 3000 a year *there seems to a few paying that). As I have said you also need to compare the price to equally ranked schools (GT, GW, Ford, Goldman, Harris, SPEA), Texas in general has an ideology of "lets give an affordable education to everyone instead of a free one to a select few". However, from what I can gather from open houses etc LBJ was a lot more generous than any other school I got into, with a lot more people receiving aid. Even a professor at GT told me that the issue was they had very few funds in comparison to UT.
  2. In general they tend to offer financial assistance more to out of state people and to internationals, because for any in state person it is ridiculously cheap to come anyways although that is just my impression, I definetly know in state people that got financial aid, my credentials were 164 Q, 160 v and 4.5 w 3 yrs of work experience, international experience in 3 countries plus my own and proficient in 3 languages, 3.5 GPA from a top 40 LAC. If you are working part time they do not really do that and do note that their aid is allocated in the fall so Spring entrance can be an issue. Do see that even without financial aid we are speaking that including living expenses and out of state tuition in total it is half of Georgetown's or SAIS tuition and living expenses ( a bit less actually). With instate tuition it is about a third. If you decide not to do part time then you might be able to get some financial assistance, there are also plenty of RA positions that pay around 15 dollars an hour and if you work 20 hrs a week like I do you even get in state tuition and health insurance.
  3. I am loving it, great school, approachable professors that care more about teaching than personal research, really nice people and Austin is great. Message me if u need more info
  4. You really should get at least 1 or 2 academic references as you do no have that many years WE. Your chances of WWS and HKS are like everyones, a gamble where they accept around 15% so the question is do you want to go to graduate school next year or do you only want to go to either of those two. If the answer is a then YES you should apply to a few others, in general I would say you have a good shot at Harris, GPPI, SAIS, GW, Berkeley, Michigan, LBJ, Columbia, Cornell, CM and Duke and for sure you will get in GMU, syracuse, indiana, Wagner.
  5. Just apply to IR schools you should be fine, I thinka lot of people I know who I met at the SAIS accpted students open house or who ended up at the GPS program in my school did not necesarily have a language-international background. One thing to keep in mind though is that most IR programs require you to be profiscent in a language at the time of graduation, so you will need to get there, just not now.
  6. As a current student I can say it is a pretty diverse place both in terms of opinions and experiences, I am an international minority student and can safely say it is a pretty liberal place and with lots of diversity, however there are students with very diverse opinions and everywhere in the political spectrum, I think one of the great things is that it teaches you to see policies for what they are and not on their place in the political spectrum. Having said that though , you would have a hard time finding very conservative people, some joke that the Bush school stole them all. Professors are very approachable but I have to agree when I wanted to visit it took me a while as it was just after I was accepted and they were on Spring break, but when I visited they were very accommodating even if my past correspondence was not, one thing though, our admissions coordinator is currently on vacations so that might have been the issue. If you live around here I might recommend attending some of our events which might be a non academic way of getting a feel from the school.
  7. Most times they will admit you but make it contingent on youi geting the prerequisite done before classes start, which you can do online etc, economics of money sounds like macro but you will need micro
  8. I had 3.4 GPA and 164 math 161 verbal 4.5 writing but I also got a full ride so dont worry as much on stats
  9. I know my school only has it with the public policy department so a lot of dual degrees just do that and specialize in international studies concentration
  10. Check out Indiana University, second in ranking, close to Illinois area and State school
  11. LBJ and Korbell both tend to offer really generous aid packages.
  12. Most schools only offer one of the two for a reason, because they are just two names that usually refer to the same thing, I would say that Princeton's MPA is more econ based than Harvard's MPP, while GT's MPP is more econ based than Syracuse's MPA, then a few other schools use other names, I myself am in a program called MPAff where it can be as admin or policy based as you want as it is pretty free. I would therefore recommend to look at the courses and not the name!
  13. No, you need a lot more work experience and even then it is always a shot in the dark with HKS
  14. SAIS and Tufts both have a more "business aspect inside" for both I think you will be very competitive, don´t bother with Ox if you do not have a 3.7, the UK only sees your GPA when they do the initial cut, you should be fine with LSE. MPP is hard without work experience but SIPA should be fine
  15. Financial investments or stock also works as long as they are pseudo liquid (3 month investments are fine) I believe there is a list at least UT Austin ISS had one
  16. Again, you will get in the issue is that how to compare you with an international with 5 years work experience abroad and who does not have english as a first language, the only way they can is with quant gre's, thus why they matter so much. Honestly the best way to not run out of time is to practice A LOT. Send me a PM and I can email you some great GRE paper exams that are great to improve your speed.
  17. 1- If you want financial aid an HKS already rejected you once even if you do get in dont expect financial aid (they are terrible at that). Chicago gives some people good financial aid, same as Georgetown, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon,SAIS,LBJ and Korbel give a lot of international really good financial (most of us got full rides)
  18. Neither SIPA nor HKS give a lot of financial aid, it is a lot easier to get into SIPA though, for better financial aid check out Carnegie Mellon (good for engineering backgrounds), LBJ, GWU, NYU, Duke.
  19. I would say buy a couple of manhattan and maybe the math bible, that´s all I used and didn´t take a single class and got 165. Mytotal money investment in the Gres was 450 dollars including GRE fee (only because they cancelled them 1 day before I had to take them in my town and had to fly somewhere else) but funnily the girls that work with me did take classes and did a lot worst than me (159 and 161)
  20. I would however add that KSG and WWS executive 30+ programs are geared for people with a lot of experience in the sector, so for those two you might not be an ideal match, yet for any other (check out carnegie mellon as they are very engineering focused) you should be fine
  21. 1- yes, remember there are people coming straight from ug, howver most programs dont accept gmats instead of gres. 2,3 well it all depends, can you tie any of your stuff with lets say development, enviornmental-science policy? With 10 yrs WE you probably can, doing some volunteer work and maybe geting a LOR from them to showbyour soft side would be a plus, but I think it really has to do on how well you tie your experience with public policy and simply asking your reccommendeds to do the same.
  22. They took your documents? They usually only check them that day and only take your passport....weird
  23. I agree, I applied with two friends from my country to pretty much the same schools, they had better WE (more yrs), better GPA and same letters (we worked together), overall we got into pretty much the same schools but I got much better funding than them!
