  1. If you know, how common is it for people at your school (particularly in Canada) to complete an honors thesis? For clinical, UOttawa won't even look at your application if you haven't done one or a similar independent project. But at my school, there are about 1900 psych majors and about 20 people in Honors I and II, so I'm just wondering how common it is for people to do the complete honors thesis? Also for Canadians, how many people complete the 4-year degree versus the 3-year one?
  2. Agree. When I first started getting these offers, I was so excited. Then they started coming in left and right and I was like hmmm, I don't think so. We don't have Phi Beta at my school unfortunately, but I keep getting them from the Golden Key and Phi Kappa something or other. My advisor says the same thing - unless its Phi Beta or Psi Chi, no one cares.
  3. Right?! I get it that they have to sort through a pile of applications a mile high and time is precious, but how are we supposed to explain anything substantive in one page/500 words? I like your haiku idea.
  4. I don't know about weird, but it's psych major to the core! Love it
  5. I keep telling myself there is no need in checking status multiple times a day for deadlines that haven't even officially passed yet. (Ask me how that's working out.)
  6. $50 application fee?! The fee at one school I applied to was $220 CAD, and all the rest of them were $100! Now, granted, I did benefit from the CAD-USD exchange rate, but still....
  7. I'm trying to convince myself that checking every day for updates when the deadline for submission of documentation hasn't yet passed is completely pointless. (It's not working.)
  8. It may change once the deadlines have officially passed and I know that programs are actually reviewing applications, but I am strangely calm right now....
  9. FWIW, University of Toronto gives until 7 business days after the 1st to submit your supporting documentation.
  10. Same. Found a minor typo in my SOP at my dream school today....*dies*.
  11. Hmm, that's good. I've been in one lab for a longer period of time, but the posters, etc. that I've done are from a second lab that's not in my area of interest.
  12. I have also heard of the GRE being used as a cutoff and nothing more. What I'd really like to know is how schools that don't require the GRE at all manage their application process without it.
  13. With regard to this, if you already know the POI is accepting students, how did you initiate a conversation via email or otherwise? I've received some good responses from people when I had to inquire as to whether or not they were taking students, but the remaining professors I'm interested in working with state clearly on their pages that they are accepting students, so....
  14. The Canadian to US dollar conversion is working in my favor. As for paper format, Uof Ottawa still requires everything on paper except your LORs. I'm like ???
  15. Apologies for thread drift, but why is that? Grouchy MDs to be? The psych section over there seems to be a bit on the negative side too. What's up with that?
  16. I think I'm in the eye of the hurricane right now. I'm not freaking out at the moment, but I know it's coming after calming down a little bit. I'm applying at a mixture of developmental and clinical programs. Applying at: University of Toronto, University of Ottawa, McMaster, Carleton, and possibly Laurier and Trent. Still trying to collect info on Trent if anyone knows about it... I'm sure I'll be back after the eye passes and I'm in full freak-out mode again.
  17. Hi! Does anyone have any information about Trent U's MA/MSc in developmental psychology or the school itself?
  18. What if you already know the answer to that question (accepting students)? How would you suggest reaching out then?
  19. How would you suggest reaching out to a professor if you already know they're taking students (via website)? I don't want to commit the cardinal sin of Asking Dumb Questions, but I'm really at a loss for what else I would contact them about.
  20. As an American student, you can't apply to OGS until you're accepted to a Canadian school. You have to have a study permit to apply, and you can't get a study permit until you've been accepted at a school.
  21. I have nothing to add -- just here to commiserate. I have the exact opposite problem: the verbal is a breeze, but to get a decent score on the quant would take more time, effort, and money than I have. I have no idea what I'm going to do.
  22. For the schools that don't participate in the Federal Student Loan program, and assuming we're not talking about U of T with tuition remission and a stipend, how did you make ends meet?
  23. I am starting the application process this year (yikes!) and have a question regarding which letter-writers would present the strongest case for me. I have my honors advisor, and she's an obvious pick. The other three are as follows: 1) An associate professor/program director of psychology at my school who supervised me on a poster project over the summer, 2) An associate professor who invited me to be her TA last summer/fall and has said she would give me a great letter, 3) A Ph.D. lecturer who taught research methods II, used my project as part of her class going forward, and asked me to be a TA for her as well, and also volunteered to write a letter. If I need two or three total, which ones would you pic? Thanks!
  24. Have I talked to you before? I'm planning on doing the same thing. Would love to hear your experiences with regard to where else you applied (U of T -- the dream school!) and also your experiences on your reception as an American student and funding at schools other than U of T. TIA!
  25. Thank you so much. This does not bode well for me if it's August and I'm already falling apart at the seams...
