  1. What does this mean? I've seen a few UCalgary invites on the results board. Does anyone know what the process is?
  2. I went to OISE's open house this year. A prof in the department told me that if you apply to, say, SCCP and DPE in APHD, that's one thing and is generally fine. But if you apply to SCCP in APHD and another program completely unrelated but still under the umbrella of OISE, they are going to question that, even through the OISE application allows you to apply for up to three programs. I wish they had the option to only apply for (and pay for!) one department instead of the option to apply for three.
  3. Multiple times. Auto reply that says "I will not be checking mail so email me when I get back at the end of January..." or something to that effect.
  4. She is soooo nice! I really, really appreciate the suggestion!
  5. I tried that -- they don't have that info Said I have to contact the prof directly.
  6. The prof I'm interested in at Carleton (Dr. Maggi) is out on leave and won't return until after the deadline has passed. Anyone know if she's taking students this year? If you were me, would you apply and gamble the $100, or just skip it? There aren't any other profs at Carleton doing work I'm even remotely interested in.
  7. Does anyone have a second to explain this process to a noob? I got an email from SSHRC that says "acknowledgement of application." Does that mean anything? This is the first I've heard from anyone since applying. I'm a little behind the curve on applying for these national scholarships because I wasn't eligible until right before the deadline at my school. Do I have it right that each school you're currently attending has a quota and they pass X number of applications on to the national competition? If so, then what?
  8. This is totally off topic, but I wouldn't want you to include it in your application erroneously. It's HIPAA (health information portability accountability act).
  9. So nice of you to come back, Faceless! I find you so inspiring I'm PMing you...
  10. I like Statistica (and it's very reasonably priced for students), but I don't know if it will run on a Mac. See if you can find out what they're using at programs you're interested in, or what the POIs that you're interested in are using.
  11. I'm thinking about putting together an email that basically says "(Greeting) I saw that you are accepting students on your website. I am interested in your lab and am considering submitting an application, but I would like to know if my research interests are a good fit with your lab. Here's what I study......here's what I've done so far.....do you think there might be a good fit for your lab? Thanks, me." Obviously much more formal, but that's the gist.
  12. Yes, they do. http://www.ryerson.ca/psychology/programs/graduate/how-to-apply/ http://www.ryerson.ca/psychology/programs/graduate/how-to-apply/gre-scores/
  13. OMG!! Congratulations! Reading this thread today has made my day! Hard work paying off again!!!!
  14. I'M SO EXCITED FOR YOU!!!! You are living proof that hard work and perseverance PAYS OFF!!!! WOOOOOOOOOT!!
  15. Might have something to do with the fact that (at least in Ontario), the licensing board requires 20 undergrad classes in psychology or something like that. I can't find it right now and I could be wrong, but I remember reading that requirement on the University of Ottawa's info. ETA: It was going to drive me crazy until I found it. " (For the program in Clinical Psychology, in order to meet a component of the academic requirements for registration with the College of Psychologists of Ontario, a minimum of twenty undergraduate psychology courses is required for admission.)" https://socialsciences.uottawa.ca/psychology/sites/socialsciences.uottawa.ca.psychology/files/information_to_applicants_.pdf
  16. "More vampirical than empirical" is one of the funniest lines I've ever read. Agree that there needs to be a major overhaul in stats training in psychology starting at the late undergrad level. What Diederik Stapel was able to get away with is criminal, and the fact that major journals fell for it is even more astonishing.
  17. Well, the MSc I'm doing is clinical, not developmental. I understand that I may have to re-do at least part of the MA if I want to apply to, say, OISE. I have no problem with that. But I get the feeling that some professors prefer people who are coming out of undergrad -- perhaps because they have no preconceived notions of how research should be done? Not sure.
  18. The question kind of says it all. I'm doing an MSc right now to expand my research experience. I've seen mixed reviews on whether doing a master's first helps or hurts, but they were all from US schools. Anyone have any information specific to Canadian schools?
  19. Go to his/her office with a prepaid Express/Overnight envelope. Whyyyyyyy must people make this so difficult? Best of luck with your applications!
  20. Interesting thread. I'm moving out of the country for grad school, and I wonder what others have done as far as residency. I obviously won't be a Canadian permanent resident or citizen because I cannot apply until after I've completed my masters. However, I won't have an address of my own in the States, so if I move my US mailing address to my mother's in Oregon but I lived last in North Carolina and my last mailing address was South Carolina, where the heck am I a resident? Where will I file my 2017 taxes? Anyone been here before? I know I have to get an Ontario driver license and insurance policy. Other than that, seems I'm in limbo.
  21. Driving a U-Haul from North Carolina to Ontario. I've done ABF for a cross-country move before, but for where I'm going, I can't beat the price for U-Haul. Sucks because I don't want to drive that big thing. I'd rather drive my zippy little car.
  22. It took McMaster SIX.MONTHS. to send me a formal rejection. I'm packed and halfway to the program I did accept and got this rejection email today.
  23. This. I work in the legal system and it is appalling what they're paying new lawyers. It isn't even enough to cover the student loans, let alone enough to live on. The job market is astonishingly bad, so much so that the ABA has said people need to quit going to law school. There are plenty of sour grapes posts from law school grads, but when you see it IRL like I do...
  24. Why doesn't SSHRC make these awards in time for applicants to present that as part of their application? It's a huge deal, that funding!
  25. Congrats, Faceless! I hope you report back with some great news. I get the feeling that Ryerson is particularly funding-sensitive...best of luck!!!!
