  1. Officially have a field placement :))

  2. Great ideas everyone thanks! I looked at torrenting a few:/ lol
  3. So I am sitting here calculating and so far a few of my classes have made their book list. The 2 classes that have made the list, the books come up to $411.00 (all used) I still have 2 more classes that will likely list books. I am panicking because I don't have that kind of money yet. I know I will get a big chunk with my loan refund and I could just take out a small amount in grad plus loans to cover this then pay it back when I get my loan refund, but I really want to avoid loans, I got a full tuition scholarship and I am taking out about 16,000 for living expenses. However, I like being prepared for my classes you know? So the idea of having to wait until I get my refund (which the person I spoke to said the latest would be Sept 5th) and not getting the books until the second week bothers me, especially when there will likely be readings and assignments. I also have to consider shipping time. I am kind of freaking out about this. Any suggestions?
  4. I had to activate my email like a week or 2 after being accepted.
  5. Being in a relationship would make this grad school experience so much better. At least the budgeting aspect.. Just saying.

Geodude, I understand that could be an issue but I mean I am not moving a million miles away for school so anyone I dated we could (or should be able to) easily see eachother when we are free.

Jenste, I know but what I meant is I like my privacy meaning I don't want to deal with a other girl in all honesty. I feel like in a relationship your lives become intertwined does that make sense? I would rather have that intertwined life with someone than just live with someone who has the...

I think Jenste is talking about the status update by another user lamenting the endless discussions/arguments she'd had with her partner about where to move for grad school. Being with someone with a career that requires mobility means compromise upon compromise.

Yeah, esp. if the location your partner wants to live in doesn't offer your program or if you don't get in. That scenario could be tricky to navigate.

  6. I'm really nervous now I'm actually terrified.
  7. I need more business casual clothes! Can dark washed jeans with a nice top and blazer be business casual?

      Yes, for sure.

  8. Haha I thought about that! It kind of makes me want to delete it :/ but hey just giving my honest opinion
  9. Awww thats so cute! I personally say go for the relationship.. I think that is the expected response from me though. I mean the way I see it, you have the potential to be with this person for forever. He could very easily be THE ONE and you will get married and have a family and it would be amazing, or you can let him go for school and then possibly have lost THE ONE. School will forever be around, but finding "the one" is rare and (at least for me) the most difficult thing in life so I would pick the guy and then once I am married and maybe pregnant or have kids I would go back to school.
  10. Signing all of my loan papers makes me so nervous

I didn't take out a lot but the idea of all the interest and my gross income and everything is just scary!

    3. Academicat

      Academicat

It should be scary. It's a big commitment, but as long as you have a plan for how to reduce the amount you take out and pay it off when you graduate, you should be fine!

  11. So I have an interview for a place I am really into. It is an organization that helps people who have mental illness and substance abuse as well have who have been diagnosed with HIV. This seems like an awesome opportunity to help a different demographic of people as well as see duel diagnoses. I am pumped! Wish me luck!
  12. 1 month until I move and I have a field placement interview for a really awesome organization!

  13. Does anyone own a Keurig? Do you suggest I buy one or not? I am having a hard time deciding.

@Gnome - for me, absolutely. This is going to sound dumb as hell, but I could never measure coffee for a single cup quite right in my 12 cup coffee maker. Every time I made coffee, it would taste foul. So, I'd be stuck making 12 cups (or attempting the 6 cup challenge) and end up throwing most of it away cause I'm not one for reheated coffee. The box of 18 costs me between $9-$11 (I buy the ones on sale) and last me 18 or more days. So I spend around 56cents per cup. Prior t...

Sheesh, cut off my long-winded message. Prior to my Keurig, I was spending $5-$6 or more per day in Starbucks/other coffee shops. So, the Keurig has saved me a lot of money. I'm considering buying the reusable cup so I can buy bagged coffee and save a few extra dollars. I got the Keurig machine itself for Christmas almost two years ago and it's still going strong. For me, great idea and big money saver.

I am a one cup of coffee a day person and I'm planning to buy a Bunn MyCafe MCU. It can use grounds or Kcups (or those mesh bags) and has all the other perks of a Keurig machine.

  14. I think I may have found my perfect placement! Now I just have to make them like me too! :)

  16. I'm never going to find a field placement that I am actually interested in and they are not filled.

  17. Thanks, I did. They explained the process so it's all good:)
  18. I am moving into my first 1 bed apt and so far I bought a bed (frame, headboard, 2 night stands, a dresser and mirror) from a garage sale. I have a computer desk and chair, a coffee table and 2 end tables. My parents are giving me their couch and I just need a mattress and dining room table. I say go to garage sales and thrift stores that is what I did.
  19. Going into serious panic mode about my program!

Lol thanks :) I agree. I need to take a step back, things always have a way of working out.

  20. Did this book help you a lot? I found it on Amazon for 4 bucks and I think I'm going to order it. I know they suggest another book but do you think I can get away with just studying out of this one for right now?
  21. http://msass.case.edu/registrar/proficiencyexams2.html
  22. My school has proficiency tests before classes start, basically you can test out of certain classes if you pass and if you don't pass it doesn't count against you. I really want to test out of Research Methods (does anyone have experience with past research methods in SW classes? I took it for criminal justice but obviously this is totally different) do you think I should buy books and study or should I just find the information online and study? They have a guide as to what we need to know, they also have the books we can use to study. I just don't want to buy the books yet because I am a little low on funds and maybe I can find the info in other places. Any advice?
  23. Will having a field placement working with Children now hinder me in the future if my focus is in Adult Mental Health? I am interested in both but I don't want to hinder my future in adult work by working with children now. Any advice?

      St Andrews Lynx

Adults are just like children. Except bigger.

    2. RBWilliams

      RBWilliams

No, you will get another field placement and can choose to work with Adults then. However, your education covers working with many groups.

  24. They want your business, so I would just tell them "when I looked on the website/ad it said ..... I just want clarification because the website says one thing but you said something different. Being that this is such a major move I need clear information to make my decision". Also just ask about the pictures again and just be pushy. You have the right to get good information and see pics before picking a place. If she isn't the person in charge I would ask for a supervisor. Good luck:)
