Tin Sn reacted to pemdas in Experience with Magoosh for GRE
Well, I don't think magoosh has that hard stuff put for math. Their math questions are testing concepts which are easily solved by using brutal methods. That may become a major weakness of magoosh aspirants prepping for the test. They should have included a few questions with the devious answer choices and tricky content to stimulate the test takers for looking after various kinds of substitution, plugging in and back-solving ways. I don't find math of magoosh tricky at all, if you have a strong foundation in the GRE curriculum math.

I agree, I applied to the same school three times, was wait listed the second time, and accepted the third time. I second kimmibean's recommendation to improve your application before reapplying. The way I see it is that we obviously REALLY want to be there if we are going through the trouble of reapplying and working on our c.v. Good luck!

If you emailed and he didn't respond, let it go. Schools don't have to tell you why you were rejected and it would only be a courtesy if the POI responded to your request. DON'T pester him. That will only hurt your chances in the future. If you want to know how to improve your application, ask your undergrad professors who wrote you recommendations. But don't write the POI again until you are applying next round.

It's just hard to know why you're being ignored - could be busy, uninterested, or just missed it. I get it, though - it's frustrating - same thing happened to me. I'd wait till summer or a less busy time, then email again. I wouldn't do it a third time, though. If I were ignored a second time, I wouldn't rule out reapplying to them, provided 1) I was REALLY interested in their research 2) it fit the budget - cause it might be a gamble.

I am so sorry to hear all things you are getting through, also, I can exactly feel your feelings since I got 3 rejection without any ad or offers, and other 6 schools didn't reply my emails. I am in China, the most fucked up thing is checking email box as I opening my eyes on the morning and I find there is nothing but rejections I received before. Yeah, for sure, the process of waiting is quite hard for any of us, but we must find a way out, aren't we? my solution is getting prepare for another IBT exam, and do my final paper in rest of time, this makes me feel better, and helps me to find the feelings when I decided to go aboard to get a master degree, you know, that's good, and enable me to turn into a peace condition. While the result might be bad, the process is a sort of gift or kinda exercise, I believe we will gain more than we expected.
Martin Luther King, Jr. said we must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope. And my words are "good things take time, so be patient." This my first post in this forum, I hope my those words could be helpful, and good luck.

Wow, I would really send an email to expain your intentions. Not for your sake but rather such that UW might give more appropriate responses to people with similar requests in the future.

    Hi all,

I am writing this post as I had applied to seven schools and had received some rejection letters.

I wonder which schools told you about your deficiencies and which schools told you only that they cannot provide enough roomห for all applicants.

This would help deciding which schools are worthy of the application fee.......

    Best,

    Dear ssynny,

    I can feel it.
Please let me know if you have any updates about your life and goal.
By the way, I would like to thank you for your helps, and thoughtful suggestion.

    Sincerely

Tin Sn reacted to DeafAudi in Rejection woes.....
I just wanted to say that I believe it is much harder for international students to be accepted in the US. Unlike places like Australia (Europe?) where they charge exorbitant fees for international students, there is in state and out of state tuition and thus probably less incentive to accept international students over their own students. I was only accepted to one school out of 8 American schools that I applied to, and wait listed at 2 others. I didn't apply to extremely competitive schools, either. That is just my take on my own situation, as I was accepted to a top Canadian school. If you do decide to apply to any more schools, it might be helpful to contact each and see how many international students they accept. This is something I wish I had done. Good luck!

    Hi Guys ,

Finally, I got a decision from one of the schools I was waiting. Its an ADMIT . Phew !!

I have not got any email though.. I just checked the application website and it had my admission decision .

But it has asked my to Accept/Decline by April 1 , and I am not sure what to do , coz I am still waiting for my first choice ..

... No funding I guess (unless something else is stated when I get the mail (if i ever receive it )) ... Applied for thesis-track ..but have been offered course-only track .. oh well ... better than reject nonetheless i guess ..

I hope I get the decision for my top choice soon .. and you guys will get yours too !!!

    1. Today is the day it makes sense it's Friday they have finished up all the apps the emails will go out by 12

    2. Unless they waited till Friday bec it's easier to let people down when they can't reach you
    3. They don't want to upset me so they are waiting until 5 to send out the email
    4. Ok it's been way too long they have obviously put me into some maybe pile and I will be evaluated again w the regular deadline applicants.
    5. If I don't get in it's fine. Except that I told all my family and co-workers about it...
    6. If I look at my email one more time and see a new email from the Gap, I won't be ok.

Even if you're a good candidate for admission, have good credentials and experience, know what you want to study, you still might get rejected. It's not uncommon to have to apply multiple times to secure a spot. So don't get discouraged if you're rejected your first time applying. Many have to try again a second (or sometimes third) year. If you really want to go to grad school, it will be worth waiting an additional year.

At this point, I would be jumping up and down for joy for a waitlist, but yeah, I would eventually begin to pull my hair out waiting on another applicant to make a decision

Tin Sn reacted to ssynny in Still I have the chance and what should I do to move forward
I would call the admission department at UW and UMichigan and see if you were put on a waitlist without knowing. Since it's been so long and you know acceptances and rejections have gone out, you were probably wait listed. Doesn't hurt to ask them!
OSU usually gets back to their students rather quickly, but I would not worry yet. You should probably wait at least 1.5-2 months before you expect a decision.
Apply to Purdue only if you like the school! I'm not sure how important this scholarship is to you, but most PhDs are funded and you really wanna end up somewhere with research you like and a PI that's a good fit. That should come across in your personal statement. Your quantitative portion of the gre is good and so is your gpa, but your verbal and writing need work. As you mentioned, your gpa is a little difficult to look at because you are an international student. Schools then focus more on your gre. If you don't hear anything soon, it may not be a bad idea to take it again and boost your writing and verbal scores.
If you're still looking for more schools, I would look at the national research council (NRC). Here's a link I found: http://m.chronicle.com/article/NRC-Rankings-Overview-/124726/
Good luck! (And sorry this is late)

I called the grad admissions coordinator for my program a week and a half ago and she said that all the decisions had been made, nobody had been notified, and they were just waiting to hear back from the FGS regarding a few "special cases" before they sent out notifications. She said it would either be this past week (nope) or next week. Roll on Monday!

    1. "You spent all day on your applications? You're still not finished?"

    2. "And what are you going to do when you're done?" (absolutely no one cares about what I'll do when I'm there)

    3. "But are there any things you could do with that in the world?" <--this person would not listen to me until I started talking about music therapy, which is luckily a genuine interest of mine, albeit still on the research side of things.

    4. "Oh, you got accepted to [unfunded master's at a name brand school]? WOW CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!" vs. "Oh, you got accepted to [a top-ranked doctoral program with full funding for five years but much less local name recognition]? That's nice!"
