  1. Update: I am now finishing up with my paperwork. The property manager emailed me the lease agreement and other move-in papers yesterday. The lease looks fine but the rent receipt states $1250 as my first month's rent, whereas my actual rent is $625/mo. She said in her email " Under first months rent that is your first and last months payment. You will always show that you are carrying a credit.". Now what bothers me is that she hasn't listed them separately which means I won't have any proof that I paid last month's rent at the start of my term. What to do?

An authorized HP retailer. HP doesn't have it's own stores here. I paid $1220.

The refurb market is very limited over here but to be honest I really wanted to go for brand-new. Whenever I buy something of value my practice is to buy the best product available and let it live out its life. For example, I had been using my older laptop for a little over five years.

  3. Agreed with fuzzylogician and GermanStudent. I myself got emails from UF and ND after I took my GRE.
  4. Can graduate students get discounts on their phone bills?

Verizon offers a discount if you're affiliated with certain local business and schools, so you potentially can.

  5. What do you do when you are denied service somewhere? I was at the airport and went to a watch stall to get one of the links taken out from my watch. The salesperson was already doing the same thing for another person. When I asked if he could do it for me too he stopped me mid sentence and (quite rudely) motioned NO. Now I'm a person who gets offended easily but on this occasion I really was. I didn't ask him why and just walked away. What should have I done?

I don't know if this was the reason for his behavior but sometimes it's hard being a South-Asian in foreign land. I was so pissed the thought of speaking to someone in charge didn't even cross my mind.

Boo rude people. You could still write a letter to corporate - express your "concern" over the dismissive treatment you received.

  6. In your case you are paying more than twice the amount as your uncle, so I'd say what you did was correct. No need to fill out another DS 160. You can always explain your situation during the interview.
  7. Thanks. She transferred me to another manager who is very considerate and responsive. She emailed me a copy of the lease when I asked.
  8. Thanks! I have sent her an email asking to see the lease and a few other questions I had about the wording of the agreement form. It will become my security deposit.
  9. Urgent help: The manager sent me some pictures of the apartment and I have decided to go for it. She just emailed me a "Holding Deposit Agreement" form which will take the apartment off the market and it will be held for me until I sign the lease. The deposit amount is equal to one month's rent. In the even that I do not sign the lease, the deposit will not be refunded. Now the thing is, I haven't seen the lease agreement yet and do not know how she is going to draft it. All I know is that it is going to be for a period of 12 months (which I am okay with). Would it be appropriate to ask her to let me view the terms of the lease before I submit the deposit? Or is it common practice to submit the deposit and only then be eligible to view the lease?
  10. danieleWrites - It is understandable that college students are lower down the list of potential tenants but that alone shouldn't make the manager completely ignore my emails. Especially after I have signaled a strong intention to rent by already submitting the application and application fee. There is little in terms of your other suggestions that I can do since I am unable to meet her in person. I will just have to trust her even if she does send me the pictures. Thank you for sharing the links. I have gone through all of them. juilletmercredi - Right now I don't even care what lease period I get. And thank you for explaining about the short term leases. All other places I have inquired with also offer only a 12 month lease. Little update: I got a response from the university's off-campus residents office. Although they did not offer to view the apartment for me, the nice lady did talk to the property manager (rude lady) and told me that they are working on getting the pictures for me and will get back shortly. So things are looking a little hopeful. Let's wait and see.

I don't like running track. It's a better running surface than concrete, but it's boring. I'd try to do a big loop around the city. and there are steps you can take to prevent bike theft, like not leaving it outside at night.

I wouldn't advise doing weighted runs. Messes up your form and can cause injuries. Better off doing the sprint intervals and hills for resistance training.

Where I live running anywhere other than the jogging track might be regarded as insane behavior. Plus the track runs right along the sea and I want to catch the breeze when I stop for a breather. Gnome and bumlyboo I will look into both of your suggestions. The sprint/jog routine sounds good and I have tried it before too. Thanks so much guys! :)

  12. Looks like you got a little bit of Ron Burgundy in you. Edit: Swanson, Ron Swanson. I got my Rons mixed up.
  13. 'Skewing the truth' is never advisable when appearing for the visa interview. If, for any reason, the officer determines that the case needs more looking-into and during that time they find out that the person was not completely truthful in their answers, the consequences can be severe. To answer Fabiola's question, if someone gets admitted to a reputable school and they can satisfactorily answer the officer's questions about why they are going for further studies and how they are going to fund their education, there shouldn't be any problem in securing a student visa even their partner is an American citizen.
  14. Are you really referring to your merit certificates as 'garbage'? Personally, I would never get rid of my report cards and, more importantly, my degrees. If not for any academic or official reasons, then just for the memories and to have something to show my kids when they grow up. Also as far as I know, most universities issue the degree only once so one might get into trouble if they just threw theirs away and later on had to arrange for it for any reason whatsoever.
  15. ^ Are you serious?
  16. In my country people aren't familiar with the term "graduate student". Based on the peculiarities of our home language, they are more likely to think that it means a student who has already graduated rather than a student who is actually currently studying on Master's/PhD level. That is why I would opt for the first option from the choices you have given.
  17. Have you considered taking out a student loan?
  18. It's the same reservation throughout. Thanks for the clarification.
  19. Of course you can but you will need to get another I20 issued (from the school you get admitted to) and appear for the visa interview again with that I20. There is a way to avoid this but that involves going to the US on your current I20 and then applying for a transfer to the school you want to attend. It's not as easy as it sounds and you can face setbacks at any step.
  20. You do not need a letter from the bank but I would advise getting a signed letter from your brother stating that he is willing to sponsor you. F1 visas allow you to work 20hr/week on campus and most universities have a paying rate higher than the minimum wage so you can expect to make anywhere from $700-$1000 if you decide to take that route; enough to cover 1BR rents in most cities. Spouses on F2 visas are not allowed to work but one way to get around this that comes to mind is working from home on the computer. I am not familiar with the laws that govern online freelancing though, so please look into them before going for it.
  21. Alrighty, that's one thing I can cross off my worries-list now. Thanks guys.
  22. The flight I have booked has a two-hour layover at the port-of-entry airport. Will this window be enough to clear all immigration processes and will I have enough time to catch the connecting flight?
  23. TakeruK - You are absolutely right. It's just that I'm having a really hard time finding good apartments close to the campus and I can only access listings that are available on the internet. I do have a few backup places in mind but all of them are a tad over my price range. I have sent her an email asking for the pictures again. If she doesn't respond in a day or two I'm moving on.
