  1. Completely flunked one of my midterms. Equal parts sad and terrified.

Take a deep breath, go eat some comfort food, and move on. You can't change the past, but you can influence the future. Don't worry about it. Everyone makes mistakes.

Sigh, thanks guys! It hurts when your grade drops from an A to a C- in one go.

The wifi adapter died. And the laptop is just 4 months old. The worst part is, my warranty will most probably not be valid here because I bought it in my home country.

  5. So I was having dinner and broke and ate half my tooth without even knowing it.

It was. I actually had to teach some of my classmates practically the whole syllabus for a class whose midterm is coming up next week and I think it went very well. They were so pleased they took me out to dinner. :)

  7. Some Pakistani folk music on this gloomy day.

  12. Sometimes I seriously wonder if the apartment above me has a wrestling ring.

  13. I hate to say this but from all my experiences in the past one month, American students are the most difficult to work with. Least cooperative, most judgmental.

gk210: Well from what I have been able to gather, the class where I have the most interaction with Americans is a combined UG/Grad class and all the undergraduates taking it are seniors. Maybe its just the, dare I say it, high-hat attitude that comes with being a senior.

Ew, undergrads. That explains a lot!

Was gonna say - lots of entitlement going on at the undergraduate level here.

  15. So the first exam went better than I expected. But I am still finding it hard to adjust to the American classroom culture.

The top-down system you are describing is the difference between undergrad and grad school (at least here). No one should be giving you the cold shoulder though, that's not cool. :(

    4. Taeyers

      Taeyers

Agreed with iphi, my undergrad experience was exactly how you describe the "top-down" system. In grad school it seems like we're reasonably expected to be capable of contributing more to our own (and each other's) learning than just attentive listening and a few follow-up questions.

  17. What to do when you really want to take a class but it has reached its maximum limit. I have already gotten my name included in the waitlist. Is there anything else I can do?

Perhaps a silly question, but have you spoken with the professor yet?

    3. ahlatsiawa

      ahlatsiawa

Yes I talked to him and he said all you can do is to keep coming for classes, register for the waitlist and hope somebody drops out. The second class is tomorrow and the last date to add a new course is 2 September. Should I go to his office after class tomorrow?

      Academicat

If you've already asked if he'll let you in and he can't (or prefers not to), it's best not to ask again. Your other option is to intimidate one of your classmates into dropping (I kid).

  18. Great! First day of classes tomorrow and I am starting to get a sore throat.

just start OD'ing on Emergen-C's. I know doing that isn't the best idea but you have no idea how many times I've fended off the head cold that way. Just drink 2 pouches of those per day.

  19. Orientation is tomorrow! Anybody here going to SU?

  20. A strange thing that happened to me was that the immigration officer did not stamp my I-20 and I only noticed that when I was checking in with my international office. They said the officers do that sometimes and as long as you have a valid I-94 (with your visa type and duration of stay mentioned on it, which is usually D/S for F and J visa types) and a stamp on your passport, you should be fine. Off-topic but I felt I should share.

Umm well my major concern right now is a really nasty case of stomach flu that developed on Saturday and still hasn't left me. I am going to the university hospital tomorrow. Other than that I can't get internet in my apartment till Sunday and my damn phone won't activate because my local bank's credit card is not 'recognized'. I don't really think I could get help from you guys with any of these but I do appreciate the offer. :)

  24. I was coming back from a jog when some Saudi guys pulled over and threw a "Salama Laikum" in my direction. (Saudis never stop to say hello to a foreigner). I thought it was meant for someone else and kept walking. They then STARTED BACKING UP and said "Excuse me! Hello!". (SAUDIS AREN'T POLITE TO FOREIGNERS). I looked at them and they motioned me to their car. I thought to myself, keep moving man keep moving. I shudder to think what would have happened if I had sto...
