Hi Lauren, I struggled with the same predicament. In fact, I was part way through an MPA program before I dropped out and pursued my MSW instead (my original plan was to do both). My goals may differ from yours, but what I appreciate about the MSW is that it gives you a social justice background in whatever you want to concentrate in. I decided to go to UConn, which has an excellent macro program-you can choose Community Organization or Policy Practice, which is what I'm doing. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!

Difficulty of coursework And NYU vs Fordham

Unfortunately, I don't have the answers that you're looking for, but I just wanted to say there's absolutely no need to be embarrassed! It's totally a valid concern. I also know others that have successfully completed Masters programs with having a family. I wish you the best of luck, I'm sure you'll do great! -
Accepted people - figuring out work situations?
bquinn replied to wagne846's topic in Social Workers Forum
I'm leaving my current job and taking out loans for cost of living. I am fortunate to have a husband who will continue to work and have an income, but we are going to amass quite a bit of debt. We are actually buying a house now because we won't have the income or credit to do so after I graduate... Hopefully I can get a part-time job, either on campus or locally, to make some money for gas and groceries. It's going to be tough, but there is no way I can go part-time at my current job and still be able to dedicate the time and effort to my degree. I did it with another Master's program and ended up leaving because it was too much (and that was at 9 credits vs. taking 17 credits with a 20 hr./week internship with the MSW). -
It could be for a variety of reasons. From reading forums over the last few years, this has happened to other users. Sometimes it's due to space, other times it's the program making the decision to put you in a less intense program due to GPA, lack of experience, etc. You could always ask them and find out! I don't think it will have any impact on the other schools you're applying to. Congrats on getting into Fordham!

I'll be commuting from Springfield- my husband and I are buying a house there in just over a month! It'll be about 35 minutes from campus (not including the dreaded traffic into Hartford), and hopefully I'll get a field placement within reasonable driving distance. I haven't looked at the new campus yet- is it really super unfinished? That doesn't bode well...

Ugh, I neeeeeed UConn to send out that information! They said they are sending more info in early March, so hopefully we will hear soon!

Good thread. I have about $19k in debt from undergrad (parents paid for one year at private school, transferred to community college and paid out of pocket there, then transferred to a state university with instate tuition), and with UConn, I'm looking at about $48k, not including loans for costs of living. My husband will also have about $35k in debt when he graduates next year. I think with everything, including loans for living expenses, I'll be looking at $120k ($155k with my husband's debt included). This is all without knowing funding from UConn, but I'm not expecting much, as I've heard they aren't great with it. Hope I'm wrong, though! Similar to the poster above, I am looking for resources, networking opportunities, and a solid macro program founded in social justice. UConn is my cheapest option for that in my area.

It would. BC is in Chestnut Hill, which isn't right in the middle of the city, so you could (if you had a car) move more toward the central part of the state where cost of living is cheaper.

I grew up (and currently live in) Western Mass, but I lived in Boston for my first year of undergrad- it's SO expensive! It's the reason I didn't stay there, despite the city being so great.

There are several reputable programs in New York. Browse these forums for a few minutes and you'll see how valued NYU, Hunter, and Fordham are, not to mention schools outside the city- UAlbany, Syracuse, UBuffalo.

Just an FYI to folks, I called UConn and the woman I spoke with said that given my application date (1/3) and completed date (1/5), I could hear back as early as next week! She said they hope to get all decisions out by mid-March. Hopefully this helps someone else out there!
