Okay, wait. I applied PhD but I thought they paused the DrPH program? Lord help me lol
-
As of now, I'm out at Penn, Pitt, and Emory. All PhDs. Still no invites for interviews. Now I'm convinced I'm never getting out of my dead end job or advancing in the world. Still waiting for: DrPH: BUSPH, Harvard, Columbia, Hopkins, GW, Penn State PhD: Brown, Northeastern, UMass, UMd, UNC, Tulane, Temple, Drexel, Rutgers My brother died by suicide at 32 years old Nov 16. I have to try and pick up the pieces. This whole thing is a mess. I regret even trying.

Same. To literally all of it, minus NYU.

Hello, all! I'm finally submitting my last applications. Finally! Pitts asks us to list our prerequisites in the questions section in SOPHAS. That's all well and good, but they ask for two social sciences and no explanation of what would count. Like, I have two master's degrees, what do they want from me? I'll reach out to them tomorrow, but in the meantime have any of you already asked them? Thanks!

That's such a good question. I wonder, given this current situation we're in, what will happen. I haven't even started. I've been putting it off because of alllllll the anxiety. Plus, when I'm done working all day at my computer I don't want to switch computers and do more work. Though, I really have to at this point! Are you asking if they're taking on new students or asking general questions?

Hey all, once I got my job after my MPH I went the full lazy route and just now looked at my CV. While a PhD is a full-time job, the formatting is a little different. I've obviously googled this about 100 times. I'm just not finding what I'm looking for. It's either all undergrads applying directly to grad school or PhD candidates applying for fellowships/postdocs, and I'm neither. I have 10+ years of work experience, (7/8 pre-MPH, 2 during the MPH, and 3 post-MPH). Part of what I'm doing is angling the mix of degree and education. So, would you put your education right under your profile, or would you go straight to work experience? Also, how do you format things like abstract reading and article refereeing? Thank you for your help!

Man, I need a new boss! That sort of ambition is frowned upon About 1/3 of the programs from my tier 1 list aren't up yet. So annoying!
-
I'm applying for a mix of DrPH and PhD programs. Either way, I assume my career will be more field epi than research and teaching (though, I'd love that, too)! My list is long but definitely includes the distance Hopkins program.

@venusofwillendork Definitely check out Allston/Brighton. Lots of students, though, I suspect many are BU/BC. If you're Harvard medical/sph, then anywhere along the green line works because it'll take you right to work/school. Doesn't matter that you have a car, you're not going to want to drive into either Boston or Cambridge. Again, it depends on where you will be going most of your days. East Boston/Somerville/Medford/Everett/Chestnut Hill/Newton all have better parking situations and allow for easier access to the city. Let me know where you're going and I'll help you! I've been here for 5 years and drive all over.

My ug gpa was a 3.1ish, as well. Maybe a 3.2 and I got into an MA program with full scholarship just fine. Then I did my MPH with a nice enough scholarship. You're going to be fine. No one cares about your undergrad if you already have a master's level degree. You've proven that you're a good student and hard worker. Just get the best LoRs you can and don't sweat the small stuff. Plus, your bibliography is more than most applicants will have. You'll stand out, don't worry! Also, hey, shoutout to another Fed ✌️

BUSPH is actually now in year 2 (this fall) of not requiring GREs. Brown and Penn are not taking them this year, either. Ultimately, I may only apply to non-GRE schools because I'm old and lazy and I don't want to do it for the 3rd time. We should definitely make a list and update it.

Hi everyone. I'm also applying. In fact, I filled out my SOPHAS basics yesterday while floating in the pool ☺️ I'm Boston based and hope to stay there. However I'm applying up and down the East coast. I'm applying to a mix of PhD and DrPH programs, almost all in epi, though some MCH programs. My passion is ID and MCH epi. About me: BA, MA (history of science and American history), and MPH epi, 1 APHA conference presentation (first author), 2 pubs (2/3 author) and one new poster accepted today (first author), plus a few others just accepted (3/4 author). I run clinical trials right now and am a federal employee. I'm older, mid-30s, so I'm going to keep working full time while in school. Right now I'm looking at BUSPH (alum), Harvard, Brown, Pitt, Penn, GW, Hopkins, UMD College Park, UNC Chapel Hill, Emory, and Tulane.

Hello, all. I've been out of my MPH program a few years now and will be applying for doctoral degrees (both DrPH and PhD), looking to start fall 2021. I'm creating my list and wondering, for those who have done this before, is rank more important than name? Like, yes, BU is 8, but if I get into Brown (17) or Yale (15) or Penn (23) is an Ivy better because it's an Ivy? Obviously this is making a shitton of assumptions about getting in, but... Do any of you have any insights? Thank you and happy social distancing!

So, here's an update for those that are not also over on SDN: accepted at BU on 2/2, rejected at Emory (2/4) and Yale (2/6 - happy birthday to me!)
-
I think being in DC would also be ideal, though if UMich (I'm from Florida, UM is Miami) is ranked #1 for your concentration and you're admitted, that is certainly something! Similar note: how do we find ranking of concentrations? I know Emory is #2 for Epi, but that's anecdotally from them, I've never actually read it anywhere.

So, we're the same person. I'd say, so long as the passion came through in your SOP, and your LoRs were strong, you'll be just fine! -

Thanks, everyone. I should note, I applied for summer. My math background is not stellar, so I wanted to be able to take biostats 1 in the summer while taking something I'll find easier, like health law or something. Plus, it's more days a week for shorter time each meeting. I think that is a part of why I heard back so quickly. I just got an e-mail from Emory, but I was on my phone so all I saw was sender as "RSPH" and subject "RSPH Invites Yo" and my heart literally did unhealthy things measurable my ekgs in different rooms. What was it? An invitation to their webinar that's a glorified "Hahahaha, you're in limbo so lets talk about it together" webinar. I hate everyone. I still may apply to JHU, for the MS/MSPH. Deadline is in March. I'm so lazy. Same with USF, UF, and Drexel. I just. The essays and dollars. -

I've checked OPUS about 90 times in the past 2 days. At least I'm not checking myHSPH anymore, because I know that won't be there until mid-February. I heard back from GWU after just 10 days, which made me really, super spoiled. I don't drink, but I sort of wish I did. That may make this less shitty. I'm going nuts. My GRE score suggested I go back to middle school math which is fair, because I had a full on panic attack during my test. I had a 3.8 in my MA program, and 3.75 in my graduate certificate program. My LoRs were strong. Have you finished applied to all your schools? I kind of don't want to blow any more money on this, so I've applied to my top 8 choices. However, I feel like I should be applying to Drexel, U of South Florida, and UF (in-state tuition, but I have to stay in Florida). I just can't bring myself to write three more essays. I'm tempted to start tweeting the schools and being like, "I'll give you $5 if you hurry up!" but I feel like that will ... end poorly. -
@collegebum1989, It's usually mid-February. I've heard from GW, and now all I do is refresh my e-mail waiting.

undergrad grades + additional upper credits taken?
♀HealthMatters replied to Overatedmerman's topic in Public Health Forum
I'm taking post-bacc classes now, because I took geology for my UG lab science. In the fall I finished bio + lab, tomorrow I start stats and micro + lab. They didn't add any of that into my GPA, because I didn't have any grades. If you have grades and official transcripts before you esubmit, they will calculate it all into your overall UG GPA. You get one UG GPA, one grad GPA, etc. Also, A+ on the even number thing. Odds freak me out. I should do epi of my own OCD, but I'd just have a panic attack. -
I keep looking for apartments on Trulia and Zillow. Rules: Near T, close to hockey. If they let me in with my abysmal GRE quant score, I'm going to fail out because I'm an Ice Bunny. Which, speaking of public health topics .... No? Just me? Okay then.
-
I just got confirmation from BUSPH. I wonder if I'll get any (good) news by my birthday in 31 days. I'm not holding my breath for Hahvahd, but BU maybe.
-
I assume the answer to that is when they are good and ready. I had no indication in my e-mail, which is likely the exact same one you got. I've been told from an alum that now works there that decisions are not made until all apps are in.
-
@collegebum1989: I am applying for the MSPH online via their website for epidemiology @jhinca05: My quant score was literally middle 50%, but I've already got a (somewhat) unrelated MA, publications on public health topics, etc. and a 3.9GPA in my grad program. So, I get it. In other news: Harvard got its apps from SOPHAS today!
