I think I'm surprised that I'm not more anxious. I just feel very zen right now, like everything is going to work out the way its supposed to. One of the places I interviewed will be making decisions next week and even that hasn't sent me into a tailspin. Regardless of what happens I know I put my absolute best out there in terms of my application materials, interviewing, and showing who I am and where I'm headed.

Trail mix....lots and lots of trail mix.

Anyone else feel like you're not going to get accepted?
MarineBluePsy replied to FY5913's topic in Applications
When I started this application season I had the mindset of "I have a really strong application this time around and I'm hoping for the best." I have opted to only discuss this round with friends and colleagues who get that this is a competitive field and "perfect" applicants are rejected all the time. Those same people also support my feeling of "I'd rather go *somewhere* than have to reapply next year." So far I'm refusing to cave to anxiety and am just putting my best foot forward all the way through. -
Hmmmm interesting question. If this were my situation I'd also have to consider the cost of living at each location. An extra $10k can go really far in some places and absolutely nowhere in others.

Here's a recent thread with the same idea.

Leggings as pajama bottoms is perfect! I'll be staying with a student as well and have been laughing at myself all weekend because I think the last time I owned pajamas was 10 years ago. I do have some t-shirts, but it'd be so tacky to go without bottoms in someone else's house lol. Plus they won't take up a ton of space in my suitcase. I think the dress you've chosen is perfect. I'll be bringing a couple that are similarly styled and will add tights, low heels, and a blazer to complete the look. For the more casual events I'm leaning toward a skirt, blouse, tights, boots, and cardigan ensemble.

It's not absurd at all and you're not the only one thinking this. When I watch movies set in super cold places the first thing I notice is how bulky all the coats and boots are. Well you wear a bulky coat over regular clothing so why would you not wear bulky boots over regular shoes? I think it's more absurd that boot designers don't agree with us lol.

Do not do this. You'll look as if you were too lazy to consider them as individuals and write separate emails. If you're going to contact all 3 of them, then write 3 unique emails. If they do happen to talk to each other and your name comes up then they won't say "yeah they said the exact same thing to me" which would be bad.

Fall 2016 Clinical Psychology Applicant Thread
MarineBluePsy replied to JoePianist's topic in Psychology Forum
I don't know how not being specific would help you. My essay covered the following: very specific research interests, the education/work/clinical experience that led me to those research interests, faculty who's work appealed me and related to my interests, research training, and what I see myself doing once my PhD is done. Perhaps the fact that most of the scientists of interest to you are in psychiatry is telling. Yes clinical psychology is flexible, but maybe there is another degree, other than going to med school for psychiatry, that might be better. I'm certainly not saying you should give up as application season isn't over, but maybe there is another way to view your interests and reform your goals. Reaching out to some of the psychiatrists doing work that interests to pick their brains couldn't hurt. -
Applying...... save up more money and don't burn through all your vacation/sick days at work! The process is way more expensive than you think it is and you'll need that vacation/sick time when interviews come up suddenly. Choosing (based on where I did my Master's)....... getting out of your comfort zone is a smart move, stop second guessing it. Preparing (based on my Master's)..... *ahem* you have resting bitch face, try to smile more!
-
No you need 2 acceptances! You want to be able to choose where you go because more than one place values your talents and abilities. If you only have one option then you may always wonder what if you'd just said no and reapplied or were you picked for reasons other than your talents and abilities?
-
Yeah I lost patience for Facebook and similar sites shortly before they came out and am not on any of them. Well if they're rejections my guess is the posters were typing through tears.
-
You're not the only one! It comes in little bursts when I least expect it. I'll go to some familiar place and then realize...I won't see this for 5-6 years?! And then I remind myself I'm in my 30s and need to get a grip lol. Nah I just let myself have my moment and then I start to think about what a good thing this is. If I don't leave now I never will and I don't want to be 80 years old wondering what if.

Things I'm thankful for..... That most of the schools I applied to sent me an email every time a new piece of my application was attached to my file That I've received interview invites! That I have friends and colleagues that listen to me vent, cheer me up, and reviewed some of my application materials That I was able to afford to apply to so many programs That this forum and SDN provide such helpful info My letter writers who got all of my letters in by the deadlines despite their insanely busy schedules My research and clinical opportunities My Master's degree that led to my research interests All of the "how to get into grad school" workshops I attended My parents for not being wealthy and therefore without realizing it having prepared me for the frugal student life Finally mustering the courage to move far away from home in order to pursue my PhD dreams and being ok saying that scares me just a little Reality tv for allowing me the opportunity to turn off my brain when application stuff and research became too much The gym, meditation, massage therapy, kefir milk, vitamins, cold pressed juice, water, and tea because they all keep me very healthy since I don't have time to be sick or stressed The ridiculous amount of vacation time I've accrued at my job which will allow me to attend interviews

How many times have you applied to Clinical Programs?
MarineBluePsy replied to buttercup8d's topic in Psychology Forum
I believe this recent thread may answer some of your questions. -
Thanks for posting this!
-
I doubt they all do and certainly not for every applicant, but it wouldn't shock me if it happened sometimes. If some employers have done it, then surely some admissions people have.
-
A good friend of mine said something that I found really helpful which was "you go where you're wanted." A school that rejects you with or without an interview doesn't want you and there is no point in trying to force yourself into some place where you aren't wanted. There are other schools and one of them will want you and you're likely better off there anyway.

I'm using it as a chance to challenge myself at revamping my wardrobe to maintain my cute standards, but still keep warm lol.

I read the article too and the comments about diversity were upsetting. I always had a feeling that's what happened, but hearing it confirmed wasn't great. The comments about the applicant who attended a religious university really bothered me. I kept thinking, seriously? Aren't these the same professors that are supposed to be teaching students the importance of not making snap judgments and the value of interacting with those who have different experiences? Yet another reason I hope this is the last application season I have to do.

It's likely I'll be going from a larger city to a smaller city, which took me awhile to warm up to. On the one hand I'll have an interesting experience anywhere, but on the other hand going somewhere with a smaller social or singles scene seems odd. It's also likely I'll be going from a warm climate to a colder one, which will also take some getting used to.

Fall 2016 Clinical Psychology Applicant Thread
MarineBluePsy replied to JoePianist's topic in Psychology Forum
Someone just posted on the results page about getting an interview at Louisville. Hopefully you hear something soon! -
If you're looking for other shows I'd try NCIS; NCIS New Orleans; NCIS Los Angeles; Bates Motel; Quantico; How to Get Away with Murder; Moral Orel; Life in Pieces; Deadbeat; Chicago PD; Chicago Med; or Robot Chicken. Sadly that's not even half the shows I watch lmao!

Psych Results Search Page Questions/Clarifications
MarineBluePsy replied to FeelTheBern's topic in Psychology Forum
As much as I like the results page I'm amazed at how much it makes my head spin. There are way more programs than I realized, many programs have multiple tracks, and there's not much consistency in how students are notified of interviews. Then of course not every applicant posts on there so then I wonder about all the stuff we don't know.....
