ASL Speech Path Grad Schools/ Gallaudet
eggfish replied to HopesandDreams's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I thought I was the only one who noticed that. -
I live in Illinois already, so I drove up and visited apartments and signed a lease already. That's not much help for you, though. You might find this website useful: https://tenantunion.illinois.edu/

I drove from St. Louis to UIUC last week, and it took about half that time.
-
I decided on University of Illinois already. I knew I wanted to go there, and I didn't want people to be stuck on the waitlist until April 15th.

Accepted my offer here and am trying to figure out housing. It seems like the grad apartments don't have kitchens, so I think I'll be living off campus.

Full tuition at Ole Miss v. TC Columbia

If you don't plan on becoming a professor or something, Ole Miss! Congrats on the full ride! -
Bouncing back and forth between schools
eggfish replied to speechie0312's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Same boat. I'm leaning towards the school that won't give me funding. I just think it's a better fit for me, and even if I have to take out loans, I'll be okay in the long run. -
Out of State vs. In state Grad School

I'd pick MGH if I were you. My professor told me ASHA makes it pretty easy to move around. I think they're both about equal in quality of education.- 13 replies

After I received confirmation that my professors had already sent their letters (so it didn't seem like I was trying to influence them), I wrote thank you cards by hand and delivered them to my professors with gourmet cookies. I'll probably write more thank you cards once I make my decision.

Firsthand reviews of Graduate Programs
eggfish replied to CBG321's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I only took the intro course before I transferred. I remember being at the open house as a freshman and being impressed by the faculty, but that was years ago. The health sciences building was a bit old and kind of in a remote part of campus. I can't really elaborate on the culture or grad program because most of the courses I took at Mizzou were general ed. People in Columbia, MO (or at least the ones I know) in general are pretty liberal, friendly, involved, outgoing... -
I just know that the clinic is new and is a separate building from the building you would have your classes in. I also think you start practicum immediately.

Firsthand reviews of Graduate Programs
eggfish replied to CBG321's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I only went to Mizzou for 2 years before transferring away (reasons mostly unrelated to the school, although I did get tired of everyone being so into football and Greek life), but I really loved my intro course. Judith Goodman was probably my favorite professor for any class I had at that school. Columbia is a really cool city too. If anyone can tell me something about UIUC or Marquette, it would be much appreciated. -
Yeah, I just want an efficiency apartment for just myself, and I'm pretty frugal. Thanks for the reply!

I have visited friends in the engineering department, but that's it. I might go to the open house, but I've been around urbana-champaign before, and it's not a place I'd like to live in for long. I would be worried about securing a hospital placement. I heard their clinic is nice, though.

I am trying to decide between UW Madison (highly ranked, will cost about $50,000 just for tuition over 2 years but I love the city and the research they're doing, faculty seems great), Marquette (not so highly ranked, about the same price as Madison but I was offered a TA position with a $4,000/semester stipend and some tuition assistance. They seem to be doing less research, and Milwaukee just seems all right to me. I do prefer a small campus like Marquette), and University of Illinois (highly ranked, half the price of Madison over 2 years, diverse campus, tons of research I'm interested in. In a boring town, but only 3 hours away from home). I am interested in medical SLP and may want to eventually return for a PhD. It would be great if any of you can provide some useful info on any of these schools.

I was offered a stipend of $4,000 a semester (and $5,000 a semester for tuition) from Marquette. Is $4,000 a semester substantial in Milwaukee? Can I live comfortably?

I'm thinking about emailing University of Washington to figure out why I was rejected. I was really hoping to at least get waitlisted

Loans :'(
-
That is correct. I was really surprised.

I submitted my application the day by which it was due and heard back from them last weekend. So, it doesn't seem like a rolling admissions process, although they might be sorting everything according to GRE or test scores and sending letters in waves.
-
I could not find anything on the website. When I log back into my online application, it says that it's complete but that's it. I put "unofficial" for UW because they have a 2-step admissions process. I was recommended by the department for acceptance into the graduate school. I think that means I have basically been accepted but it's not guaranteed.

I got accepted to St. Louis University today. The email said, "You should have received notification about acceptance from the Graduate School via CollegeNet". What is CollegeNet??

Did you use the same SOP for multiple schools?
eggfish replied to amc91's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I kept the same introduction paragraph/anecdote for all of them. Then I wrote a new essay for each school, citing what research or professors at that school in particular interest me. I only had 4 schools to apply to. It seems most people in my class are applying to 7+ schools and using the same SOP. You ask if schools just want to get to know you or if they really want each question answered explicitly. I think it's the former, but I could be wrong. -
It is highly recommended, for SLU (top choice), that I have 3 people fill out an ets thing called a PPI. However, it is unclear the kind of people I am supposed to ask about this. It just says one probably shouldn't ask the people who did one's LORs. I was thinking about asking 3 of my supervisors at work, but I just work at a fast food restaurant, and I've only been there for 3 months. Is anyone else applying to SLU? Do you think the PPI is necessary, or should I just skip it? I really don't have many people to ask.

I have been studying Speech Pathology & Audiology and will earn a bachelor's in the field. I'm applying to graduate school, but I'm starting to realize I would prefer to do something more medical. I have tons of biology credit and some physics, but I have never taken a chemistry class. This disqualifies me from applying to every program I've researched. I'm also afraid that my GRE scores aren't high enough. They're good enough for my field, but I haven't taken a math class since junior year of high school so I'm at a disadvantage there. Does anyone have any recommendations for me?
