  1. @Citizen of Night Vale Yeah its going to be a pain. We decided we were going to store small things at my parents house in my old room and just sell/give away the rest. We are still in craigslist furniture so it would be more expensive than its worth. I also got lucky since my mom offered up her points (she travels for work) and we can stay in a hotel for 2 weeks while we look. Where are you moving too? @Meghanlodon Its going to suck but it wont be so bad afterwards! Btw definitely check out the craigslist postings in person before you sign. Pictures can be misleading. Also a good trick is to put in the address into google earth and see how the neighborhood looks. You can definitely get an idea of the neighborhood that way.
  2. And this is officially in my amazon cart
  3. OMG my museum is opening next saturday, graduation is may 7th, and I have finals. I'm not readddyyyyyyyyyy
  4. I'm not sure how much help I can be but I'll try! The advice I received about letters was to get at least 2 from professors and then maybe one from someone you worked for. I didn't do research but my letters were one from my adviser so I took a lot of classes with, my boss/mentor (whos a professor) at the university, and my supervisor at a museum I interned/volunteered for 2 summers. My supervisor has a bachelors but had many years of experience as a museum technician. I was accepted into 2 universities, had 1 really interested, and then rejected from the other 4. I think my letters were a little unusual but I felt like they were appropriate for what I wanted to study/knew they could give me the best references. I would ask someone who you really trust and see what they say. Of course I'm just starting my studies, so my advice may not be the best.
  5. @Danger_Zone I originally was going to have another internship at the museum I worked/volunteered at for the past 2 summers but I haven't heard anything about whether I got funding or not. So I'm assuming that I won't be interning there. Instead I'll help my boss/mentor for a month before I move. I want my museum to be completed as soon as possible! I hope I can see it again in the fall when I'm in the area for a wedding. But yeah I get wanting to do something. I like a week of doing absolutely nothing but anymore than that and I start to get restless.
  6. I'm feeling overwhelm too, so at least you aren't alone! I've lived with my boyfriend and I'm still stressed about moving, we are moving from Virginia to Texas. It doesn't matter how many times you do it, its always going to suck a little . I also am nervous about what is expected of me and still waiting for details on registration, putting down a deposit, etc. Thats awesome you are going into archives!
  7. I think it was the right call, don't doubt yourself! I had similar thoughts in my process but I think we pick our schools for a lot of reasons. Its easy to forget them!
  8. @shadowclaw Yeah my parents worked a lot too, they would often be gone 2-3 weeks at a time. They would leave us money for pizza but told us not to tell anyone we were alone . Our household was often a one parent household since the other one worked in a different city/state or were deployed. I like to think my parents are the exception not the rule. I'm proud of them but I can openly admit a majority of people are unable to produce the same results. I like to think that as a society we should strive to level the playing field so to speak. I mean not all of us can receive a small loan of a few million dollars
  9. @shadowclaw Ah while I don't agree with that woman's opinion, it makes sense. My family has similar opinions to her. My parents grew up poor, but it seems like social mobility was easier when school was actually affordable. My mom openly admits she got lucky while my dad is more inclined to think everyone can earn 100,000 a year if they just work/are smart. My family and I avoid these topics since we are in firmly different camps. My father says that I'll change my mind when I become "older and wiser".
  10. See my landlord and building are what I like to call "old school" He just offered for people to pay their rent on time and we are moving soon so I decided it wasn't worth the 5 min hassle ha
  11. I don't know if I would classify it as a luxury, I think of it as an added certification so someone can be more knowledgeable in their chosen profession. Then again I think an educated population, learning a trade, going to undergrad/grad school, taking certified exams, is necessary if we want to maintain a thriving society. I'm very fortunate because my parents have been able to help pay for my schooling. I'm not religious but I believe in helping people because its the right thing to do. I like some states' model on education, if you have a certain gpa, the state will help pay for you to go to school. If that means I have to pay extra in taxes, so be it.
  12. See my apartment does as well but I resist it since I'm paranoid of somehow someone getting access more easily that way than just old fashion handing in my bills,
  13. @Pink Fuzzy Bunny I forgot to pay my electric bill recently, had to pay a late fee boo. But I think its very common for people to forget! I always put reminders everywhere usually, on my phone, calendar, sticky notes, etc. Its excessive but I can't stand being late.
  14. You should call and ask! My university has conditionally accepted me because I haven't graduated yet, I'm in undergrad too. I specifically asked them if there were any other requirements, like maintaining certain grades, and they said nope. All they need is my transcript.
  15. Sigh IUPUI was super nice in their responding email! I really liked them, but I guess it wasn't meant to work out. I also have a lot of clothes, but I don't want to leave any of it! @Cat_Robutt I think everyone is nervous about catching up, I know I am. I'm coming out of undergrad but have never done research so I'm nervous that I won't be able to produce good work. Everyone says I think like a researcher, and ask insightful good questions....
  16. I would have done the same thing! Then again I already have a reputation as being snobby because wait for it.....I wear jeans and sweaters! Because somehow clothing that was originally worn by farmers screams elitism. Plus you never know, his hands could have had graphite all over them.
  17. I hate the touch screen feature as well and never use it. My poor boyfriend has accidentally touched the screen and didn't know where he ended up. This happens everytime he uses my laptop and he wants to throw it off our deck lol.
  18. I received Texas Tech's offer while I was at home laying down on my futon, basically the exact same situation as Oregon. But with a much happier ending! I'm very anticlimactic
  19. I had to email a program to even find out that they never got my transcripts even though I sent it to the right address. My school doesn't send them electronically so I tried to resend them through post. Just got an email friday saying they don't have it still.......I already accepted another offer so it was a moot point really. I've just come to accept things like that as a "sign" that it wasn't the right program. They were/are super nice though! Just wish I knew where those transcripts were ending up.
  20. I don't have a box of any sentimental value, was unhappy growing up, but my boyfriend has a box full of his old IDs, paperwork, etc. He thinks those things are small enough and could still be useful. He has scan things though, so that could be an idea! Our useless but sentimental stuff will be our framed photos, along with our rock samples that we have found during our vacations. We will have a box full of rocks
  21. They freak out along the way . We moved my boyfriend to Alaska from Virginia and now we are moving from Virginia to Texas. We like to think of it has a productive vacation, yeah we are moving for a reason but we will still stop at parks, tourist sights, etc. We found that its doable to drive 8 hours a day. If we drove more, we will get annoyed/cranky and less than that just extends the trip.
  22. Sooo I know that people have already talked about how grad school don't care about grades after they accept you, but I want to be validated as well! Physics is the only class I'm slightly worried about, I'm passing but I'm around the C- to C mark. Is that ok guys? All my other grades are at least upper Bs-As. Texas said all they need is my final transcript. If they cared about my final semester grades they would have mention it right?
  23. I know! I was super flattered/shocked that she would do that for me. I'll ask her about recommendations for neighborhoods but I don't want to scare her away so I won't ask her to drive around! I just got a really nice gut feeling from her and she told me she would be more than happy to be my PI.
  24. @haltheincandescent thanks for the impression! Its always nice to hear a perspective from a resident. I guess I'm just a little sad that I can't do both, I thought IUPUI research style was pretty interesting (huge research project that effects the local community). But I'm pretty happy with my choice of going to Lubbock! IUPUI seem really nice and answered all my questions but I guess it just wasn't right for me.
  25. @sjoh197 Thanks for the tip, I'll try it out when I'm settled! I rather not pack up/move more stuff than necessary.
