I second what @sjoh197 - the only person I was ever able to stand for long periods of time was my boyfriend (now ex). I could spend hours with him without being all like "Can I go hoooome nooowwwww?!?!" You'll find that too one day (whether in an S/O or a friend). I especially think that in graduate school it will be more likely - at least I'm hoping! Plus, college girls are such a wild crazy bunch, and LOUD.

If there were a support group, I'd join the hell out of it, because I'm the exact same way. I don't HATE most people, I just find 99% of them annoying. It's the reason why I will be paying significantly more in living expenses just to live by myself, and why after 4 years at undergrad I barely have reached more than "casual acquaintance" status with anyone. And yes, I thought the same thing when watching Her.

He stopped responding to my emails He gave me reasons (TAing is great experience, etc.) but since I've TA'd before and most graduate students graduate within 6 years at Cornell (so if I TA'd, and graduated within 6 years, I'd be wasting a semester of a fellowship), I think I'm going to go with a fellowship the first semester at least. I guess I can always TA in the spring. To be fair, I don't think it matters much. There are so many external variables to consider that I just need to make a decision... and that's one thing I've been vowing to work on, is my decision-making skills

Yeah, it's because of how my funding works. I have six years of fellowships, so my first year I can choose if I want to TA (and make 2k less) or use 1 year of fellowship and not have to TA. It sounds like an easy choice but the DGS recommended I be a TA. But I think I'll be behind most students coursework-wise, so I think I'm going to choose not to... I dunno

@Cat_Robutt "Self-cleaning" is a bit of a misnomer for the litterbox... you basically roll it onto its side so that all of the litter falls through a grate (and goes back when you flip it right-side up) and then the clumps go into a little pull-out drawer to empty: http://www.amazon.com/Omega-Paw-Self-Cleaning-Litter-Regular/dp/B0002DK2A8?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00 @sjoh197 HOW ADORABLE!!!!!

That's kind of my hope! I'll be adopting one hopefully next Monday... that way I have a week to stay home with it before I need to start working. I hope to go with an older cat (older meaning ~3 years or so) so that they don't need to be entertained all day like a younger cat. I'd love to have a cat that is content with napping in the sun for 12 hours a day, and then will cuddle with me when I'm home. That's the dream!

I think the 80-hour workweek is more for first year students... and hopefully since I won't be TAing or doing research my first year, I'll have more time to stay at home with my (hypothetical) cat. The cat I've already bought a self-cleaning litterbox, expensive automatic feeder, and cat tree for... hopefully this time next week it won't be a hypothetical cat anymore!

HEY CORNELL. WHO NEEDS WARM WEATHER ANYWAY?!

Yeah, I nabbed a one-bedroom north of campus near the airport. The housing up there is a bit nicer. -
I'll admit, I thought all the talk on previous pages about finding the perfect writing utensil was a bit frivolous - I've just used pens from the dollar store for my entire life and had no issue. But then on Thursday my worldview changed when I had to borrow a pen from the guy behind me... I. NEED. TO. FIND. THAT. PEN.

I also found this when I did a summer internship in HEP-ex... a lot of software packages unique to HEP are pretty finicky to get working on a PC... something that OP should definitely consider.

Fortunately I haven't had an outside-of-school job for a couple of years, but I'm getting tired of pulling all-nighters at school... and part of me knows that that's exactly what graduate school is going to bring. Siiiigh. I'm with you - one more week! I graduate on Friday and then leaving for Ithaca Friday night! Woooo! Though on a side note, who knew how expensive moving was?!

Is anyone else terrified of the looming depression that is PhD work? Every grad student I've talked to has told me not to get a cat because I won't have time for it... a CAT! They also told me I'll be spending 80-90 hours a week at school... I guess to some extent I knew that, but I'm still terrified
