From what everyone has said and the past acceptances on the results forum, UCR admits in rounds, so they're deliberating tomorrow again (a few invites have already gone out) and probably another time or two after that, with maybe acceptances going out within the different rounds. That's my understanding to how it works.

Shellacked again...
ThePandaBard replied to FreakyFoucault's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
So much of this. Last night I got a call with a Chicago area code and I knew I had already been rejected from Chicago so fuck that number. Also when calls were going out from one of the programs, I got a call and got so excited then it was my dentists. I was also waiting for word that my car repairs were finished, so double shellacked. One non important phone call when I was waiting on two. -
I feel you. I work as an advisor for a program that aids low-income, first-generation scholars in applying to graduate programs and for the last 3 years, I've helped something like 40 students with their applications - all successful. I've gotten one acceptances with a wait list on funding at my bottom choice (because of the funding - I knew it wasn't a guarantee ahead of time). It sucks hard to work in academia and be rejected by academia at the same time. If you drink, have an extra one for me and feel better :-(.

2018 Acceptances
ThePandaBard replied to ashley623's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'm Early Modern English. I apply poststructural Marxist feminism to Shakespeare plays to study capitalism at it's beginning (mercantile capitalism - Shakespeare himself invested in ships that came to the Americas for logging) and the effects of a transitioning society on women specifically through literature and the history of the period. -
2018 Acceptances

Thank you and I feel the same way - though the department has been pretty good at responding I'm not stoked about the acceptance and waiting on funding. My top choice is UCR (for a variety of reasons) and my friend who's in the PhD program now said they're making MORE decisions on Thursday of this week. I'm not sure when they'll send those out, but I'm hoping for something from them. -
2018 Acceptances

Sorry, I'm not replying to this but I wanted to ask: I note in your signature that you've also gotten into Nebraska - is that Nebraska-Lincoln and did you get funded? I got accepted but wait listed on funding. I was told it was a pretty short wait list and I'm near the top. I'm just wondering if 1) you have an offer for funding there and 2) if it's one of your top programs since I note you were accepted to others. Thanks! -
Early Modern Roll Call
ThePandaBard replied to JustPoesieAlong's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'm an early modernist. I apply Poststructural Marxist Feminism to Shakespeare's comedies (though I also do other playwrites like Marlow for comparison) to look at how class and gender conflicts manifested during the transition between feudalism and capitalism. Marx himself wrote that Shakespeare was a great critic of capitalism so that's what I decided to study, along with women (or the consrructed concept of women filtered through the male gaze versus records of actual women and gender politics) of the period as well.- 30 replies

It looks like acceptances went out, or at least interviews, to the majority of the programs I've been waiting to hear from (UCR, Boulder, CUNY, Davis, Vanderbilt, and Columbia - already rejected from Chicago outright) and I've gotten one acceptance with a waitlist for funding at my bottom choice of school (which, to be honest, I didn't even want to apply to because it wasn't a great fit and match but my thesis chair insisted. I'm really not excited for it). I was waitlisted two years ago before my MA at UCR and was the top person on their waitlist (and at Davis as well but I have no idea where I was on their list). I was strongly encouraged by UCR's English department to apply again and it seems that I'm either waitlisted or rejected this time around. It's a bummer since I've redone my GRE for a higher score (93% verbal and writing), have a pretty high GPA (3.95 graduate GPA), have done more intense research and disseminated the research at top conferences in my field (16th Century Society, etc.), and had not only my department but other recent graduates from my field look over all of my application materials for a thumbs up. This is my third time trying and I think it's over - I'm not going to try again. I can't keep putting my life on hold to apply to departments that constantly don't want me nor my research.

Waitlist Movements

Moved from UCR's wait list into the rejection pile. They had all of their spots fill up this morning so I don't think they're even going to the wait list.- 145 replies

2016 Acceptance Thread
ThePandaBard replied to BarAndFrills's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I've been accepted to the MA/MFA program at Chapman but probably won't attend due to lack of fellowships offered and the price of tuition. I've also been wait listed at UCR - if anyone got accepted that doesn't plan on attending, please let them know! They said I'm on a short list to admissions. -
I've just been informed that I am on a very short wait list for UCR's English PhD program. I'm excited! My area is Early Modern English. If anyone isn't planning on accepting their offer, please let the program know sooner than later! I'd be ever-so-grateful.

I've just been informed that I am on a very short wait list for UCR's English PhD program. If anyone has gotten into UCR and doesn't plan to go, I'd love you forever for letting them know! And yes, that rhymed. That's how I express my love.- 145 replies

Thank you! I should have been more specific: I am interested in the Performance Studies PhD within the communications department. But you were super informative nonetheless :-). -

Has anyone heard from Northwestern yet? I know one person was playing phone tag as far as a phone interview went, but I've seen no other news. -
From what they've said, people accepted hear about funding in early March and they've asked us to accept by March 15th. So I'd hear about funding before I'd have to pay $500 to confirm my acceptance. I've been emailing admissions and have two options now: pay $250 by the deadline if I decide to attend, or take an extension and pay the full $500 at a later date, if I accept. I'm still waiting to hear back from PhD and other MA programs and about funding here, so I may just wait until the deadline to decide.

I had a few questions, if anyone here could answer them. I was accepted to Chapman's MA/MFA duel degree in English and Creative Writing (emphasis poetry) and I wasn't sure of the school's rankings. I'm really excited - it was the only MFA program I've applied to and I was pretty sure I wouldn't get in. I've written and published a few poems, but creative writing was never the main focus of my studies. Does anyone have any idea, in addition to Chapman's rankings, if they generally fund people in their programs? I can't find anything and they stated I don't get to hear about funding until early March. They also have a 500 dollar fee to lock in my acceptance, and that seems fairly steep. Is that normal for an MA/MFA?
