  1. I recently was invited by two schools (across the country from each other ?). The first is from Wed- (technically) Friday, whereas the other one is all day Friday (with optional dinner on Thursday). I asked the first school if it was possible to shorten their interview schedule to Wed-Thursday so that I could fly out Thursday night to other location... they seem to go for it! I was honest and said that I already had a commitment to another interview day but their program was a top priority to me. Wish me luck though -- here's to hoping for no delays those three days.
  2. Can the University of Michigan and Michigan State poster share their POI initials? Thanks!
  3. I'm sure this has been asked before -- but any advice on prelim phone/Skype interviews? How prepared should I be in terms of knowing the POI's work? TIA!
  4. I lived in Windsor for a period of time- although not as a student. I think it definitely depends on what you like to do in your free time. In the summer it is beautiful and lots of riverwalk space and nearby beaches in Leamington or other places to take day trips (and if you make friends with a local who have boats you can go to the nice bay areas out near Amherstburg). They have the typical nightlife scene, lots of bars and clubs. I came from a southern state-side city, so I loved the abundance of different cultures and food options. There's plenty of theatre, film, and gamer groups that I've seen that you can get involved in. There are definitely areas you'd want to stay away from (and some are about a mile away from the university), but the cost of living seems reasonable compared to D.C. The houses in Windsor are very old, however, and may be different architecturally from what you're used to. Some areas have been prone to flooding out the last couple years. I loved that it was right across from the States- being American it was nice to be able to see my home country and go to Detroit to see friends, experience Midtown and go to Pro games.
  5. Yeah, I've been on there before. I just find that a lot of them are Bachelor-level. Am I being unrealistic in finding a more "seasoned" job for research positions? What else am I qualified for (without a license for anything) that a Bachelor-level isn't?
  6. Unfortunately, I haven't been contacted by the only school I have interviewed with; however, I've come to terms with it (ish-- it changes hourly, lol). Saying this, does anyone know of any good listserves or job boards for RA's/Fellowships/Lab Coordinator positions that I could get on or look at to help find my plan B? I have a Master's Degree so I'd prefer something that is not just Bachelor's level. What have you guys done in your years between application cycles? Any tips/advice/websites would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
  7. My professor told me to not be surprised if someone that isn't a POI interviews you. Schools sometimes add "filler" interviews to kind of check you out and make sure you're sane/can handle the rigor and ask all the neutral questions.
  8. Yeah, I've seen perhaps one or two entries on the result search page for Univ of Michigan (Ann Arbor) for the Feb 16 weekend I believe-- so I'm assuming rejection. But I am still curious about UIUC especially - complete radio silence. I've also seen one entry about a formal Skype interview (apparently they don't normally do in person interviews??). @SarahTonin do you mind DM'ing me your POI initials for UIUC? This week has me in knots!
  9. Has anyone heard from any of the programs/know they have sent out all invitations for interviews yet? University of Michigan University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Indiana University, Bloomington University of Nevada-Las Vegas If you've received invitations, congrats! Mind sending me your POI initials?
  10. If you stay/live in Midtown (where campus is located) and Wrightsville Beach area you will certainly be okay in terms of being safe. As far as housing reccomendations: DO NOT GO TO CAMPUS EDGE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Best advice. Second, if you want to get away from "college-y" and rowdy apartments, I would stay away from any apartments directly on Racine Dr. and ones that only take in UNCW/Cape Fear Students (i.e, Lighthouse Apartments, Progress 910). These apartment complexes may seem awesome when advertising, but it's just annoying being a serious student living in basically a big, glorified frat house. If you are looking for more of a young professional area, you may go towards Wrightsville Beach or even Porter's Neck area of Wilmington (if you don't mind the commute). That being said, there are a few townhome/apartment complexes that aren't filled with rowdy college students that are on a UNCW bus line- I just can't think of them right now. To the second poster, I believe the UNCW campus as a whole has a good head on their shoulders where majority of everyone accepts individual differences. Of course there are a handul of people who are closed minded- but you will find that everywhere. I also think this extends to some of Wilmington as well, where you find most people are accepting, but because Wilmington (excluding the campus) is filled with the older generation and it is the South, you will find some that may stare or have an opinion in mind. Being that I have pride in the city though, I do have to give props for the area to be more liberal leaning and more "open" in a sense than the rest of NC. Hope this helps!
