Shellacked again...
Yanaka replied to FreakyFoucault's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I laughed, I'm sorry xD I can imagine receiving my rejection AND two conference rejections at the same time HAHA I applied to like maybe 6 schools last year. It was my first time and it showed: I applied to top-programs, not sure if they really fit me or not. I was rejected by all of them except for an MA at Villanova for which I applied last minute because rejections were coming in and I thought "oh. shit." I was lucky, because I applied to two MA's: Nova and another program in VA, who rejected my application because my French undergrad is only 3 years--which is standard and valid for all other programs except for them apparently. They still took my money, though I'm only applying to 1 program this year because I had an opportunity, and also because I felt bad asking my French profs. to submit more letters. You can't imagine how DIFFICULT IT IS to get it done in France and have them submit their recommendations on our websites. Also I worry a lot about bothering people. Honestly, I told myself that I wouldn't apply again after last year--but I think I might try a third time next year if I don't find an awesome job that makes me really happy. I think I like university and thinking about stuff and expressing my opinion about that stuff. And I'm pretty stubborn. I get disheartened but I usually get back at it pretty fast, often because I don't want to admit I screwed up hahaha--it helps me think "well, like, forget that, let's do it again AND BETTER like the other thing never happened. I'LL SHOW YOU I'M AWESOME." If only my brain were this proud when it comes to working out HA -
STANFORD! Oh my gosh. Congratulations!!

There was one for English programs as well; I think there's one for every department haha

2018 Blooper Real*

The director of our dpt told me that they didn’t give more time even for recommendations, and when the person whom I asked to recommend my project answered this morning, she said it was too short notice. We had been working on it last week, but I guess she didn’t really like where I was getting and didn’t tell me that. I tried submitting my proposal anyway in case she was ok to write her rec, but the form asked who would endorse me. I didn’t want to put her name and be in trouble. I guess I should just pull my head out of my ass next time. Thanks for your encouragements, though. I wonder if I should give it a shot. But I don’t know how another professor would write me an endorsement now. -

I am so sorry that happened to you! Usually I put those notes in bold with plenty of ??????? or !!!!!!!! around them so I don't miss them when I re-read my stuff. I'm so scared of that type of accident... The only blooper I had (that I know of--talking about form not content) was forgetting to edit out the a school's name in the SOP for a different school... It was a *just take my free money* kind of accident. I just want to wallow here because I was applying for a summer research grant, and didn't see that I needed a professor's "recommendation." The deadline was today, and nobody answered (understandably, obviously) to write that letter, so I can forget it. That's a big fat stinky blooper for me! I wanted it to help my resume for hypothetical possible eventual other applications or academic/non-academic career... -
YESSSSSSS oh goodness!!!!! You deserve this SO MUCH! After all your help here, and your help there on the other side of the computer.... I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU

Hey y'all, I just want to share a piece of info I might have about the French dpt. at Rutgers. I think the committee gathers end of Jan./early Feb. so we still have some waiting to do. Best of luck to everybody!

I got an answer from a PA senator, and he seems to be saying that that part of the tax bill does not concern all grad students. Here is a copy/paste of what he said: "Specific to your concerns, both the bills passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate impose a 1.4 percent excise tax on the investment income of college endowments. To qualify for the tax, a college must be a private institution, have 500 students, and meet a certain endowment per student threshold. In the House bill, the endowment per student threshold is $250,000, while in the Senate bill it is $500,000. Under the Senate bill's threshold, approximately 30 to 40 private colleges with massive endowments nationwide would be subject to this excise tax." Thoughts?

This needs a little bit of working on (e.g. a lot of commas missing), but it's awesome. Thanks!

Some people are saying that was just passed isn’t the one that screws higher education. I’m confused?

I just learned Trump went to U Penn (Wharton School for business). I needed to share that dreadful info with someone. -
Sounds like what I'm accustomed to in Paris

Language for a Victorianist?
Yanaka replied to brontebitch's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I see. It still seems like you don't have a language that would help you with your applications, and your not intending to take any might be an issue for you? Are you sure Polish can't be helpful at all? Europe (continent) communicated at the time, and I know some censored French books had their readership in Northern/Eastern European countries. There might be some digging to do? -

Do you already have a second language? Doesn't the PhD require you to have two to three languages min. and at least one of them being relevant to your research? -
Bumping this thread. Looking for an affordable studio/1br apartment in ("good") West Philly and Wynnefield and Overbrook, let me know if you hear of anything!

Language for a Victorianist?

Having a French lit background, I feel all early modern, modern and early contemp. periods in France have interacted a lot with Britain historically and artistically (and I'm specifically referring to literature, of course). The other way around seems to work as well, even in the history of book publishing. So I'd vouch for French, too! With my very small experience of the matter.
