  1. I guess the whole GRE quant thing also depends on what sort of student you are, and the schools you're applying to? If you're a top-nerd student shooting at Harvard & co and can't handle rejections well, you'll get a good quant score. If you're like me, a slightly above average person who doesn't know how she gets to places, and only knows she's not interested in programs who want her to get a good math score, then it's not important.
  2. True. Good tip! Not one that I always follow because I'm impulsive, but yeah the offer isn't going anywhere and it's still early (even more so in Texas!). Make a few calls, scream and cry and laugh a couple of hours before thanking them and asking when you'll have more info haha
  3. Take your time! Like, an hour tops But the offer isn't going anywhere yet. You better make sure you've regained at least part of your coherency before sending an email back!
  4. That's amazing! It must have been an awesome fit on their part as well!! Congratulations on picking the one.
  5. Congrats, potential Austin...nians...nites... people from Austin!
  6. Hahahaha!!!! I was in the 6th percentile, I am extremely proud to have had a better math score #shook well our methods sure didn’t work out!
  7. I did that too. I alternated between hitting the same letter, and trying to guess and follow my “gut feeling.” I tried to do it the right way, though, but I prepared only two months prior to taking the exam, and I quickly realized that the math part was going to take me ages. Not because I had to remember old stuff, but I had to LEARN new stuff!! Nope. I gave up after two weeks of including math in my studying, and got a 13- something. Even the stuff that I thought I was okay with I didn’t understand. Such a cruel exam to have people like me take. I tried hard at school, I had a tutor and then we did baby math when I was in high shool, but nope.
  8. Thank you! I’m so excited. Yes that should be about it? I’ll try not to insult anyone—which I might do! Thank you for wishing you could like my message.
  9. Counter-shellackleleled! I received an email from the graduate conference of UMD, and after reading the happy first lines “We are happy to inform you...” I thought it was just another hope-lifting apology. But I was wrong!! My proposal for that conference was accepted!!! Aaaaaaa!!! Oh my goodness what the hell is a conference!!!! Hahahaha
  10. I understand you completely about continuing with your current program, and not wanting to move. I usually enjoy moving, but I’ve been here in Philly for just a year and I love it so much! And I don’t want to spend the money, and I really don’t want to get a car if I do move to NJ...
  11. All four groups of fingers are crossed for you !!
  12. Yes!! It makes it so much worse. I can't explain exactly why, probably in part because it makes your hopes even more vain. On another note, I submitted my proposal for the UVA grad conference, and they said in the auto email that they should get back to us "early Feb." There are too many expectations for one month, people. Oh, also, our yoga instructor this morning said that if our January was crappy, there's a new eclipse tonight so we can consider Feb 1st as the real new year. HELL YES
  13. Haha now I need footage of some robot-sounding Goddard directing his adaptation of that
  14. I think people don’t get that it’s so competitive to get into a university program. They would understand better if it were like a private school or maybe exclusively Ivy Leagues. I ended up saying something in the lines of “there’s some sort of entry competition, it’s really hard to get in”, and they would understand better than applying to universities. Maybe it’s just in France where the getting in part is easier than it is here...
  15. I do have a mild French accent, but I was born and raised in Virginia until I was 5... I just gotta work that twaaaang
  16. Why are y’all quoting me when y’all are actually talking ‘bout someone else?! i could have the credit to use y’all, but I can’t achieve the accent (yet). I’m working on it.
  17. Winter is coming for you. Maybe next year. Be prepared!
  18. Yes, I got help from a few other candidates here who were absolutely awesome and kept me grounded and encouraged me at the same time. They all got into programs, and the last one on the list did this year as well. I'm so happy!
  19. Fantastic!! Weren't you here for last season as well? Congrats on getting into a program! They tricked you into being distracted from your interview!!
  20. Thanks! Ah, Grad café. There's always awesome people to take the time to help out!
  21. Hopefully!!! Hahaha
  22. YES! Extremely helpful. So the bio in the body of the email, and the proposal as a document without the bio? Thank you so much!!
  23. you can't even begin to imagine! I'm going totally off the rails. I'm being shelackelled by my own dreams and interpretations of what being in a Ph.D program offers. I'm already planning on the house, horse, and child I want to buy.
  24. A conference at UVA. "Constructing Experience: Narrative Innovations Across Time and Media" They say to include a short bio, but I don't know if it should be in the body with my topic? Should it be in the 3rd person? Should I include time/date/etc. of the conference? Is it MLA style, or no? There are so many different templates online.
