Fall 2017 Applicants

I'll bear that info in mind! I think it's smarter for me not to divulge them unless it's mandatory, and I highly doubt my current scores give me access to any special financial consideration. -

Ha! My posts are really getting interesting reactions Being a EU student, I wish I would consider that kind of program @Caien. It would make it all easier! But I think I'm trying to make my existence harder by absolutely wanting to move back to the US! I'm going to look into out however, at least for general culture Thanks!! -

Phew, I'm not sure I feel comfortable enough with those (yes, I'm copying Wyatt's style) to spread it all out given that I'm trying to remain somewhat anonymous and that I'm a such a novice in all this scholarly stuff, so I'll send you a pm -
Out of upvotes again. Thanks @PoeticsofPossibility! I'm trying to remain calm and hopeful, because I have plenty of other options that, even if they're still very hypothetical, aren't so bad. Not as good as grad school, but I'll be fine. @tvethiopia I feel like asking for funding is too much to ask for just having my nose in books, but one's allowed to dream a little ahahaha
-
Oh gosh, don't be sorry! Yes I think it's fit. And @Wyatt's Terps has helped me figure out what could have been problematic in my SoP's! I'm also worried about my WS, now. I think it might not be research-oriented enough. It's basically a 13-page long essay, it's not a thesis or whatever would be more appropriate. I just haven't had the opportunity to do any research-like work, it's not what we do in my current program...

I'm a US citizen! I think I should put that in my signature, to help people with the confusion of my location That's why I thought I had a better shot at the process, because I'm an international without the language barrier (or almost, I'm sure graduate work in the US will need some getting used to at the beginning of my studies) and the administrative constraints of the VISA and all bahahahaha Now I know what I should put in my future SoP's: "cheap int'l student with promising assets in French lit & culture looking for spot in anything you want as long as it's funded and has books."

I've spent my whole day on the forum, and when I have a second during the day I come on this site right away Don't be too shy about it, guys. We're all in this shame together! -
Thanks @PoeticsofPossibility! I missed that info, for some reason. No decision has been made! They say I should receive answers by March and April, but others have received their acceptances (for Comp Lit, yes) so I don't think I should hold any hope. I get the feeling, overall, that acceptances are sent out soon and the only answers received after that first wave are negative ones

Can I complain about financial aid and opportunities information for masters degrees? I've just spent the entire day in my bed, figuring out the subtext on school's program pages, and trying to understand how the basics work. Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! So now I'm waiting for my pizza, which I will also consume in my bed and perfectly aware that I will regret eating it 5 min. later--probably while eating it, honestly.
-
Congrats to y'all for all those--strangely announced--acceptances! Would anyone who's receive any answer from UCLA be able to tell me how that decision shows on their application? At this point I'm wondering if my status has been updated and I just can't see what's in front of me. Does it show on top of the page?

I would believe that too. aaaaahh!!

Thanks! That's the kind of answer I was looking for. I'll keep them to myself then, and probably edit them out once I've applied in case there are spies on the forum Cool! Ah, thank goodness for this forum It will also save me the $$! -

Yes I know, @Warelin The question is: since I'm not majoring in English, do you think my present scores can help my application? -

Thanks. It's an interesting question that I was able to add in my email to UMB, thanks to your timely reply -

Me again! I didn't know where to post this, but I need as many honest answers possible. I am going to apply to a few MA programs whose deadlines have not passed yet and submitting my GRE scores is not mandatory for some of them. Would you consider that a ~155V ~140Q and 4.5 AWA can hurt my application? Since I'm doing my BA in a French university and will not have an English major, I am debating whether my GRE can help show that I'll be comfortable with studying English or if, on the contrary, they're not good enough to be submitted and might tank my file. What do you (very candidly) think? -

Lovely, @engphiledu! It's sometimes hard to remain positive for others who get in when you're so out of hope, but bitterness only makes one sadder. It's my first year on GC and yes, I am astounded by the comfort the forum brings. Hugs to y'all! (And yeah, I'm also out of upvotes.) -
Hahahaha I know @Silabus . I really need to move to the US (need to turn back to my roots in a philosophical and personal means to better understand who I am--yes, I am a romantic soul) but I am really thinking that I might regret that decision! Yeah hopefully I'll get in next time. But hopefully I'll have the great chance to get into an MA this year, too!
-
I know it's super late but I can translate your message in French if you still need the help.

Honestly I'm feeling very weird about this whole process. I am sad I'm not getting in anywhere, and in the meantime I'm kind of relieved. I know that admissions are partly arbitrary and partly very thought-out decisions, so I'm telling myself that I'm just not ready for a PhD yet. You guys shouldn't beat yourself up this much--they haven't selected you but they also know what's best for you, too. Or at least I like to think so. However, my trying to be positive and dynamic is not a complete success. I'm panicking at the idea that I won't have anything planned for after I graduate, and I feel like an octopus. I'm looking at all of my options, and it's great to have options, but I don't know how to prioritize, how to split my time between planning and working for school, and I am feeling awkward with asking my profs to submit letters of recommendations again for MA degrees. Also, I don't know when or if I should give notice to my landlord, because what if I end up having to stay in Paris until the end of this year? I'd have to go through apartment hunting again and paying fees and stuff. So much to do. And I thought applying was the busiest part... at least I knew (almost) exaclty what to do, back then...

Ugh @Straparlare, still 5 to go, hang in there. -
I know my question is strange, and I am having a hard time wording it. I was only worried that having input would basically mean that I wasn't capable of coming up with a good paper on my own. But it's true that research seems to always work that way, with people reading your stuff and commenting--I'm not too familiar with that aspect just yet Yes pimp out. I forgot there was a little word there missing!

Thanks for the answers. So neither of you think it's bas even for you to submit something that's been "pimped" thanks to professional researchers or editors?
