Espeon reacted to t_ruth in When is the right time to contact POIs
I don't think it is too soon to contact now as long as you have a well thought-out email. Make sure you've read an article or two from each POI and can ask an intelligent question about their work or note how your research interests may align.
Faculty are not technically paid to work during the summer on student mentoring, and although many still do, some make a point of not replying to email over the summer. Given this, if you write now and don't hear from someone, mark your calendar for a week after their school year starts and politely follow up.

After getting off the waitlist my final choice is: Emory University
Research Areas: Education, Mental Health, and Music
Reason: Overall awesome fit, loved the faculty (one even does specific research on the intersection of music and mental health)
I was also waitlisted at Ohio State University, but Emory was definitely the right choice for me

Espeon got a reaction from Konnichiwa2015 in A PHD in Education without a Masters
I was accepted to HGSE for the PhD program and do not have a master's degree, but I do have three years of research experience in undergrad and all three of my recommendations came from people on my honors thesis committee, so they were familiar with and could articulate my research capabilities. I also have two years of teaching experience in a public school. A friend of mine is at Vanderbilt doing a PhD in international ed and she went straight from undergrad (can't remember how much research experience she had, but I know it was at least one year). There are a ton of factors that go into admissions decisions, but it is absolutely possible to get in without a master's degree, especially if you have demonstrated experience in exhibiting the qualities that will make you a successful doctoral student (research, teaching, writing, etc) and have recommenders who have witnessed those qualities in you.
I also didn't study education in undergrad (I took a few classes, but didn't major or minor in it). If you can demonstrate why you want to be in education, I don't think that matters. It could actually be helpful--you can see education through a linguistics perspective, for example, whereas someone who studied economics might see things through a different perspective.
Basically, it's possible. I'd recommend checking out grad profiles of current students in programs you're considering just to see what is typical, but I imagine you'll encounter a mixture of master's and non-master's PhD students (for those that don't require it at least). And you can always try, and if you are not successful, maybe a master's would be the best path to give you a more solid foundation for pursuing a PhD.

Espeon reacted to THS in Fall 2017 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread
To the discussion above and all the up/down votes.  I think we've done a great job up until now being fair and supportive of everyone.  Let's not ruin that because people are commiserating over what they see as an opaque admission process.  We might disagree with the content or the conclusions they've drawn, but rather than being mean we should be constructive.  This is an incredibly stressful process and, as everyone knows, no one really knows why some people get in and others do not.  Just be fair, stay constructive.
Best of luck to everyone still waiting to hear back this week!  And congrats to those who have choices to make!

People are upset right now, they just realized that it isn't going to happen...don't kick a man when he's down.  There are more constructive ways to say the same thing and that's all I'm saying.  This has been a great community to turn to as I've gone through this process and I'll be back next year if my waitlists don't work out.  I think we all can stay respectful, however.  How is it our place to tell another person to give up on their dreams?  More to the point, I wasn't taking sides.  Just trying to point out that we are going to hear more of the "it isn't fair" as people get bad news.  Please, please don't drag me into the arguement.

I'm going to meet with my principal as soon as I am pretty certain about which program I'll attend and have documentation of my admission. I'm just going to set up a brief meeting with him, and then I'll meet with my assistant principal and department chair after I meet with him.

I am in the exact same position as well. Like most of us, I adore my kids and would do anything for them, but I'm itching to do research and have a broader impact. I teach at the same low-income and underperforming high school I attended, though, so I am hoping my matriculation to a really good PhD program will inspire my kids to reach for their goals, as well. I am also going to give them my contact information so they can keep in touch and let me know if they need any encouragement.
I'm probably going to print out my admission letter to the program I'll choose to attend and say something like, "It has been an absolute honor to begin my career in education at this school. I want to continue to do great work in education, and the right path for me to do that is to take the next step into a PhD program. Unfortunately, it breaks my heart not to renew my contract this year, but I am going to do everything I can to ease my transition out of here and to do right by my students." Something like that.

I got the call for EPPE yesterday. I think they will send out official acceptances/waitlists/rejections tomorrow (at least in the phone call, the dean mentioned that I'd get the offer in writing on Friday, so that's something!).

Based on the results board, it looks like NYU sociology notified of acceptances last year between Feb 11 and Feb 24, so you probably have at least another week or two to go. Hang in there!

Espeon reacted to TakeruK in What were you doing when you received your acceptance?
This is now 4 years ago for me, but one school called me just as I was putting on my shoes since my spouse and I were going out to dinner. Being from Canada, long distance calls are super expensive and I was expecting a telemarketer so I was a little grumpy at answering the phone (didn't say anything bad just a grumpy hello I guess). It turns out it was a prof from the dept telling me the good news. I was both shocked and didn't know how to recover from the beginning that I kind of just froze and said "Thank you for the good news" in the most flat and monotonic voice possible. The prof asked if I had any questions (I didn't, since I was completely unprepared for the news!) and said that someone else will follow up via email about planning a visit etc. Then we hung up. Afterwards, I was kicking myself since I thought I sounded like a jerk for sounding completely unexcited at the news. At the actual visit, I mentioned this to the professor that called and of course, I had over analyzed everything and he didn't even remember me sounding unexcited. In fact, he said he was the one that felt bad because they actually called me 3 days after everyone else got notice because they forgot to assign a person to actually call me. lol
The way I "bottle" the feeling is to save all of the emails like this to a gmail folder. I call it my happy folder and I put all good news in it (admissions, fellowships, "your abstract is accepted for a talk", "your paper is accepted", etc.) Grad school has a lot of downs and there are some days the imposter syndrome really kicks in and I feel like I don't have what it takes to make it. So, when this happens, I open up my happy folder and re-read all of the emails affirming that I am capable of this and it helps a lot.

Ok, true story. Applied to 7 schools and had 5 rejections at that point. I had totally given up hope and was already making plans to talk to my boss about staying on for another year. On top of all the stress of the rejections, my doctor had decided that a funny looking bump needed to be removed, so after work I went for the procedure and came home with stitches in a place that made it difficult to sit. So I'm freaked out about stitches (I'm a pansy) and worried about the labwork (it was either nothing, or melanoma, fun choices!) and when I walk in the door my husband hands me a skinny envelope from Temple. I was so emotionally exhausted I nearly threw it in the trash unread. Thankfully, I opened it anyways and had to read the first sentence 3 times before it clicked. I laughed for 5 minutes at the irony and then cried for 15 from all the stress lifting. And the bump turned out to be nothing.

I wanted to post the following to the results page but discovered that lengthy notes are moderated. Nuts!

Highest weighted and unweighted GPA in the history of mankind. Perfect GRE scores, including for subject GREs both inside and outside of my field (just for fun). Exceptional LORs from the most acclaimed professors in the entire universe (3 from Earth and 1 not of this planet). A bajillion published first-author papers, short stories, full-length novels, and a zillion forthcoming. Volunteer experience out the wazoo. Hardly surprised. I knew 100% I wasn’t going to be accepted but applied anyway just to have options. Had I been accepted, I wouldn’t have chosen to go here fo’ sho’ as it would have been a TERRIBLE fit. In any case, I got way better offers (six-figure guaranteed scholarships + health insurance + deluxe flex meal plan + reserved parking spot) from every top-ranked school in the galaxy, including ones I didn’t even apply to, along with very personalized congratulatory hand-written letters from all the faculty and their immediate and extended family members, plus gold-leaf-framed oil paintings of their pets to boot.
