  1. I got rejected for OGS twice and won a Vanier, so don't worry too much about it. It's all stupid.
  2. Last year, I got my email at 1:46 pm EST from researchnet... Sending you folks good vibes
  3. @PsychBoy Tangibly, it's just given me more time to work on research. I only get one TA a year (as opposed to two pre Vanier) so it's freed up time. Additionally, I think in some ways it's added more pressure to be a "good academic", but much of that is probably concocted by me. Re: publications, I didn't have any peer reviewed journal pubs going into applying and I ranked middle of the pack of Vanier recipients. I remember what it was like for me this time of year, and it was unbearable. I was a wreck. Don't be like me. Take care of yourselves and remember that so much of this is subjective and luck of the draw in terms of who you get reviewing your application.
  4. I didn't think I was qualified for a number of reasons and when I asked my supervisor if I should apply, he said "it's extremely competitive and an accomplishment if you even make it out of the department to the university level, but nothing ventured nothing gained". So I applied. And got one in 2017. I'd say put the work in, because you never know what could happen.

    Trudeau 2018

Last year I got the rejection email on February 15 and remember my application just disappearing from the system a few days before that.

    Trudeau 2018

last year they let people know on February 9th. I imagine you'll hear next week
  7. Hey everyone, I just want to say that you should take care of yourselves. I remember how excruciating it was waiting. If I could do it again, I'd try to focus more on my work and less on an outcome I had no control over. I know it's easier said than done, but I regret how much energy I put in to thinking about the results. Just know that regardless of what happens, you're all impressive scholars. And remember that the process is subjective and depends heavily on who you have reviewing your application, so it's a bit of a gamble. Anyways, March 30 will come sooner than you think and try to make the most of your time until then. Take care.
  8. @psychboy I was nominated last year and received a SSHRC Vanier
  9. @PsychBoy Depending on what your school's procedures are, you might not know until March that you were forwarded. I have heard that some schools don't let applicants know they were forwarded while other schools do. My school did and requested I make some edits. You should just email your grad studies co-ordinator.
  10. @thehungryscholar like media interviews? nope. have you? @Lanie I remember my friend doing a media training webinar for the vanier...but I might be wrong...
  11. @thehungryscholar haven't heard anything yet. My friend won one last year and I think they start to do media training and outreach in the fall semester.
  12. I guess they don't want to make any promises in case things go awry. Makes sense. It actually makes me feel a little better. I'm just going to (try to) not think about it or repeatedly check reserachnet. Just will wait for that email.
  13. I heard back from the Program Officer This was their response: You will receive an email from ResearchNet when the results are released. So... I guess we just wait
  14. I couldn't take it, so I emailed the program officer. I'll let you know if anything comes of that
  15. I'm holding office hours right now for an exam viewing and the students probably think I'm some over caffeinated neurotic grad student haha. oh man.
  16. I got NO sleep tonight and I have no appetite whatsoever. But, I got this email from a prof today. I found it really consoling: Here’s what I want to say today: getting funded in this cycle (in any given cycle) is not diagnostic of your success in the program (or beyond). Of course we all hope to hear good news (I know how many of you feel – I’m also waiting to hear back about a grant submission!), but great projects – and great people – often don’t get funded. Like any review process, there are idiosyncrasies. If you get funded, that’s wonderful! Celebrate it. But if you don’t, it’s okay. Of course it’s disappointing, but no one will think any less of you. Your place in the program is secure; it simply means you try again next year. It’s one of the tough things about academia (well, life, really)– there is a lot of “getting back on the horse.” I am sure every faculty member here can share stories of beloved papers sometimes being rejected (over and over). Some of the giants in the field didn’t get tenure in their first jobs. Sometimes it feels like things are going your way and sometimes it feels like it doesn’t. I’ve learned to be grateful for successes, recognizing that there’s a lot of randomness that intersects with effort to get desired outcomes. And I’ve learned to be easier on myself with rejections, recognizing that there’s a lot of randomness there, too. It doesn’t mean I don’t learn from them. But they don’t need to be defining. So hang in there.
  17. Hmm... When I emailed the Secretariat about a question I had in November she said March 31, 2017 results will be released. And, yeah I get how you feel sweaty gorilla. It's the most stressful weird experience I've had, and I've been through a lot. Anyways, I guess we have to see what happens tomorrow. Take care of yourselves, everyone
  18. As far as I know, we get all the info that day. ps... who feels like puking? anyone? anyone? Bueller?
  19. They'll be posted on researchnet on Friday, probably some time in the afternoon
  20. @Adelaide9216 The Vanier has about 200 people competing for 56 spots for each of the agencies. The Trudeau gives out 15 for around 200 applicants and has some specific thematic criteria that can influence whether your proposal fits their vision - so, I'd say the Trudeau is harder to get (depending on your area of research). @kimchipapa netflix, family, and friends sounds like the perfect way to distract yourself Good luck! Hope you get one
  21. 11 days... ugh. How are people doing? I've been oscillating between accepting I didn't get one and having little moments of hope...
  22. I'm still waiting back to hear about the Vanier, but I was at least nominated by my school. I'd say my marks aren't super stellar. But the Vanier focuses moreso on leadership, so if you've done community work etc this may be a viable option for you.
  23. did you hear anything @apoc19? I heard people got the email last night...
  24. thanks @Lanie! I just got news today I didn't make it through to semi-finals for the Trudeau, so let's just say the agony surrounding the Vanier has become exponentially worse. How is it that a scholarship can be so all consuming?! It's been such a weird experience. I never thought it could have such a hold on me... I know that there really isn't anything I can do but wait, but your words are really really helpful, so thank you

    Trudeau 2017

Anyone hear anything back about semifinalist results yet? I think they said early February, which I'm guessing is any time between February 1 and February 15...
