  1. I applied to PhD Comm and got an acceptance email a month ago. Currently trying to decide between schools. What do you think about West Lafayette?
  2. FIRST 1. BA Journalism, MA Communication 2. BA 8.58 out of 10, MA 9.11 out of 10 (both degrees from Serbia, Europe) 3. LGBT representation in digital media 4. Zero experience - in my country grad students don't really teach 5. See number 4 please (instead of "teach" put "do research"). My only research was MA thesis where I analyzed the language and communication skills of Serbian news anchors. 6. Journalist in daily newspaper for 5 years 7. I am 28 SECOND 1. I had a strong desire to continue studying and stay in the profession, especially since moving to US and doing boring jobs unrelated to communication and/or journalism. Also, I wanted to get an experience of studying in the US. 2. No 3. No 4. Two letters were from my professors and the third one from editor in chief. One professor was my advisor for MA and the other one was the chair of Comm grad studies. THIRD 1. I made a list of all Comm programs in the US that offered full funding. Then I narrowed it down using location and GRE/TOEFL requirements as a criteria. In the end I narrowed it even more by looking at faculty and their research interests. 2. I decided to apply to one "safe school", four "decent chance to get in" and two "out of my league but who knows". I was also taking into consideration job options for my husband. 3. Funding (unfortunately) 4. Eight, seven 5. 154 for verbal and math, 4.5 for AWA, only one time, I was expecting them to be around that number so I felt ok 6. Considering the lack of teaching and research experience, I focused on my professional experience in the media, languages I speak and international background. 7. I was feeling like "who are you kidding, you're not going anywhere". Heavy imposter syndrome, especially since I've moved to US recently and have never been on campus so far. I still don't know what quals and credits are, but I am excited for a chance to learn! 8. I think I will have to answer this after some time, since the process is still not done. FOUR 1. So far 2 out of 7 (Purdue and UC Davis), still waiting for one more decision. 2. No waitlists 3. Rejected by 4 so far 4. Yes I didn't expect it in a million years! 5. Yes 6. Still trying to decide, it's too hard 7. 8. Get a job in academia, although I wouldn't exclude other options FINALLY 1. Getting my first acceptance letter 2. Taking GRE (so exhausting) 3. Relax - you're way better than you think you are!
  3. @av2010 I started typing "I love sex" but I deleted it due to the fact it would have been misinterpreted LOL I wanted to say I love it as a research subject, my interest lies in LGBT representation in digital media.
  4. @av2010 wow, congrats on a 100% successful application season! @phdthoughts this is one of the most interesting research subjects I've ever heard. I would love to read about it!
  5. @DBear I think you did the right thing and you will make someone on the waitlist happy. There's no reason to wait if you're already sure where you want to go.
  6. Hey guys, I really hope the end IS gonna be sweet for all of us and I hope we will continue talking here. That said, I was going through a major crisis while the forum was down (Paranoid) question: Do you think members of the faculty spy on us here?
  7. I will have individual meetings during my upcoming visit to Purdue. I think it's pretty common but I don't know what to expect. Mine too @heyDW is Iowa now the only school that you both applied to?
  8. @2ManyTacos and @Triangular I have been rejected by U Washington on January 30th, the email said they received 186 applications for fewer than 10 spaces.
  9. @av2010 dear fellow communicator, tell me your secret please - how did you make a decision? It's sooo hard If anyone is silently visiting the forum and plans to go to Purdue's Welcome Weekend, now is the time to speak
  10. @DBear I'm so happy for you and glad you decided to choose Comm because otherwise I wouldn't have met you (I hope I used the right tense lol). And now I'm gonna google "forensics" too @heyDW I love the expression "break you down and build you back up", you mentioned this one time before and I felt like that's exactly what I'm hoping for. Currently my husband and I are little closer to Davis than Purdue, due to realizing how many job options he would have in both places. After all, I've been saying that UC Davis is my no. 1 wish from the beginning of this journey and been leaning towards it even more after that wonderful conversation with a professor. But I don't want to make any decisions before visiting both places.
  11. @phdthoughts I knew it, yaaaay!!! I'm so happy for you Who knows, maybe I will end up choosing UC Davis over Purdue and then they will definitely have one more free space. And maybe you get another offer until then. @heyDW I will visit Davis in March, probably March 10th, they are yet to set the date and notify prospective students. @DBear maybe I'm getting the fastest answers but you have the best score no rejections yet!
  12. @heyDW that's ok, I would narrow my choices to Purdue and UC Davis anyway. Less than two weeks until the visit to Purdue How are you two holding up?
  13. Rejected by UMN Twin cities on 2/13
  14. Finally some news from UMN Mass Communication! I was tired of checking the website several times a day. It's a rejection but at least I know. Only one more to go
  15. I've bookmarked this forum long time ago, when I first started studying for TOEFL and GRE. My plan was to read other people's posts and maybe ask a question or two, but I ended up visiting GradCafe 4-5 times a day I hope we will stay in touch after this (not so fun) ride is over!
  16. @phdthoughts that's really strange about Purdue. Their Welcome Weekend is in two weeks, so I don't see why they haven't sent you an acceptance/rejection email yet. Maybe you are waitlisted?
  17. I will PM you.
  18. Hi everyone! I'm going to start PhD studies in Communication this Fall and I have to decide between Purdue and UC Davis. Both schools offered me TA position with full funding (the TA salary offered by UC Davis is a bit lower but not significantly). I will visit both schools before making a decision but until then, I was wondering if any current students of these schools (or residents of Davis and West Lafayette) have some advice for me? I am 28 years old, moved from Serbia to US 11 months ago and will be moving with my husband who is a welder. Davis pros: Location, weather, already talked to two professors and one of them was trying to convince me to say yes and wants to be my mentor because our research interests are really close. Davis cons: Expensive rent, didn't find their PhD in Communication program on any ranking list. Also, the professor told me they had only 3 PhD generations so far. It would be much harder to move there from Chicago. Purdue pros: Cheap, well known, not bad ranking, easier to move from Chicago. I could still spend time with my friends at least once a month. Purdue cons: Location, weather, so far no one from the faculty contacted me.
  19. Yesss! Congrats! Haha I am the same when it comes to the word "husband"
  20. @kirbs005 you should email them. I emailed UC Davis yesterday and they sent me a funding letter soon after that. Funny thing is - the date on the letter was February 7th, exactly when the professor told me I should expect it. Not sure why they didn't send it on the 7th.
  21. I agree! I talked to a professor from UC Davis on Tuesday and he told me I will get a funding email on Wednesday but I got it yesterday. It's a full funding offer so now I have to decide between Davis and Purdue.
  22. I've sent emails to UIC and UMN Twin Cities this morning, asking about decision dates. Their application deadlines were long time ago. Also emailed UC Davis to ask about any updates regarding funding, since the professor I talked with on Tuesday told me I should be receiving a funding email by Wednesday evening, but that didn't happen. Whatever the outcomes are, I think when this is all over we should throw a party together - at least a virtual one
  23. OMG I'm so sorry and I can't believe it's that complicated! Hope you will receive some positive news soon, you definitely deserve it! I had the opposite situation - I was admitted to Purdue but didn't receive their acceptance email. Out of the blue they sent me details about the hotel for Welcome Weekend and when I asked is it a mistake, they told me they have sent the acceptance letter a day before, but I never got it and it wasn't in my spam mail. Weird...
