  1. @The Shade King Only if we get to talk about the various origin myths as well.
  2. Hey @Conky3000, thanks for the advice! I know you weren't able to read through everything, so I feel like I should clear some things up. I'm actually finishing my anthro MA right now. When I say there is overlap between Comm and Anthro, it's not about a generality of interests. Many programs study the same things, but approach them with different theoretical frameworks and this is what I was trying to convey. Comm just happens to be ahead of anthro in the amount it focuses on digital media and interaction. It's true, I have many interests, but when I wrote my SoP's I spoke of conducting research on the interaction of online and offline communications in geek communities by possibly utilizing the community I worked with for my MA, observing interactions on Twitch and other areas where geeks congregate online, and attending conventions and conferences attended by geeks in person. If I could pinpoint why my apps have not been successful, I think it would be that I need to do a better job on my SoP's, build stronger relationships with my POI's, and maybe have a bit more luck, as @DBear brought up.
  3. Thanks @kittyball The prof did request that I let him know where I end up and stay in contact, so maybe I'll have the chance to work with him in the future.
  4. 2nd rejection- at least the POI wanted me. Doing some home spa time to relax and de-stress.

I hope you're getting cat hugs too! That's the thing that gets me, just because you're an awesome candidate doesn't seem to guarantee admission - seems like there really is a lot of luck. I'm surprised at how lucky I've been since I really am not that great of a candidate on paper. Let's see how the rest turns out, but for now, have a great day!! It's finally stopped raining in my neck of CA so maybe I'll go outside..

  5. UGH, so many emotions. So, my POI at UCL wanted to do an interview, but at that school you need a second potential supervisor to approve the applicant/do the interview. POI couldn't find a second supervisor for me so my app won't be moving forward.
  6. *Sigh* So, emotions all over the place the last few days. My POI at UCL was interested in moving on to the interview stage (we've been emailing pretty consistently over the last week or so and had an email conversation last summer), but he just sent me the bad news. At UCL, you need a second supervisor willing to take you on, so he was looking for someone to be second before the interview. No one else was willing to be second, so my app can't proceed. UCL was a tough sell since they don't offer funding, but still disappointed not to have the opportunity. Hopefully, I'll get the chance to work with this professor in the future.
  7. @EvelynD Are there any conferences you could present at as an independent scholar? I did this during my break after undergrad and I do think it helped me get accepted to an MA program.
  8. Thanks @DBear! It's with a really well-respected anthropologist, thus how tempted I am despite the lack of funding. Now if only I were rich...
  9. @DBear it's an Anthro PhD, but in the Uk, thus the lack of funding. I'd love to work with the adviser I'd have there, but I'm really gonna need to think it through if I get an acceptance there. @ejpril88 no need to stop whining, we're all in this together.
  10. I'm still waiting on 4 out of 5 decisions. :/ I've gotten one official rejection, expecting 1 to 2 others, have been asked to do an interview next week (school doesn't have funding though), and won't hear about the other until March (probably).
  11. @farflung I'm very lucky in that my father's side of the family has a vacation home in the mountains. I'm going to book the house for a month or two and just work on turning my MA research into a book.
  12. @farflung Yeah, I know. It's extremely attractive to consider having this person as a mentor and I definitely will be weighing my options carefully if I'm accepted. It's the only non-US school I applied to. A friend reminded me today that it's not a race and I do have options if I don't get into a place with funding this year. Right now I think the most concrete thing I've decided is that I'm going to run off to the mountains for a month or two during the summer and work on writing a book.
  13. So mixed bag of news today. Got an email from a prof about setting up an interview for next week. Yay, exciting! Upside: This prof is very prestigious, works in the area I'm interested in, and I feel would be a great mentor and contact throughout my career. Downside: It's a UK school, which means no funding package. At this point, I'd need to get loans to pay out of pocket my first year and hope to get a fellowship that works internationally (many US fellowships are only good at US institutions, after all) and covers all my costs for the next several years. I'm talking to friends who live in the area to get a better idea of what I'd be expecting for cost of living if I go there.
  14. @klasik No! I don't believe you!!!! *tableflips* In all honesty, you're right, but it does feel over so I'd rather keep planning my life, you know?
  15. @DBear I definitely think my SoP ended up being the weak part of my app so I could definitely benefit from some tips.
  16. @DBear I should really pick your brain about the SoP
  17. Thanks @DBear! If I don't get in anywhere this year, at least I can be near my family.
  18. Me too @ishouldbeworking! I'm pretty sure that's where my apps failed me. :/
  19. I have contingency plans too @redikulus but I can't start working on them until March.
  20. @EvelynD gradcafe says I can't upvote your comment. x]
  21. Yeah, I love anthropology @DBear but unfortunately not many anthropologists are looking at social media/online communities/etc. There are some notable exceptions, but overall its just too new a field to give me many options in terms of PhD programs on the anthro side.
  22. @DBear I think I would still apply to both, but way more Comm programs than I did this round. I discovered that many Comm programs relate to my interests that I wasn't aware about before. I'm completely down to co-author a Buffy paper! I find that a lot of subjects can actually be studied across the disciplines, so whether I did an anthro or a comm program wouldn't make a huge difference for that.
  23. @DBear I think, for most schools, they do send out most acceptances as a batch. I think the other acceptances come from people waitlisted and then admitted, so better not to get my hopes up and just keep moving forward.
  24. Congrats everyone who got into Irvine! If it wasn't a rejection for me before I'm sure it is now, haha. At this point I'm happy for everyone getting in, but also just waiting for all my rejections so I can get over it and work on improving my app for next year.
