So I may have an interview at UCL. I was contacted by my POI a couple days ago requesting my dissertation before having a Skype interview. Problem is, I'm currently writing my grad report, so I don't exactly have a dissertation to show yet. x] I let him know that today and did offer to share my main deliverable which is written, but we'll see I guess. Outside of academia, my sister finally publicly announced her pregnancy so now I get to tell everyone I'm going to be an auntie! *Dances* Also, today seemed to be a good day. A friend offered to co-write a presentation with me, taking over as lead author, so that I can do 3 presentations at a conference instead of 2 (if all of my abstracts are accepted). All 3 are different presentation formats and I'm really looking forward to doing them.

When should I decline my offers?
GreenEyedTrombonist replied to DBear's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I agree with the above advice, but I wanted to take the opportunity to tell you congrats on having this problem! 3 admits and 4 without responses so far is amazing! <3 Also, thank you for being proactive about making this decision as I think it helps the schools and those who might be accepted from the waitlist. -
@Spaghettyohz if it's the same as last year, people should be getting a phone call any day now.

If I'm rejected from all this cycle, I plan to refine my SoP so that it really shines. I'm also debating retaking the GRE after actually reviewing math. I haven't had a math (other than stats) in about 8 years, so I didn't do that well on that section, but not actually terrible (156, 63rd percentile). My other two scores were good though (94th and 98th percentiles) so I may not spend the money to take that test again. I may also switch out one of my rec letters for the non-anthro programs I apply to (applying to Anth and Comm because of my research interests) because one of my committee members for my M.A. is a Comm person and can better describe my ability to thrive in that sort of program. At that point I'll also have several additional conference presentations and papers (currently have 3 presentations and one paper that placed in a conference competition) and will have several articles submitted to journals, though probably not yet published. Ultimately, I think I'll also apply to more programs.
-
@EvelynD Absolutely nothing. I do know things have happened for 2 of the programs I applied to (interviews at one, acceptances at another), but I haven't heard from either so it's probably waitlist/rejection for me at those schools. I'm a high-functioning anxious individual, so it could be worse, but I'm definitely feeling the anxiety. I've stocked up on chocolate, haha.
-
Even though I haven't heard from anywhere yet, I'm just gonna assume I'll be rejected this cycle. If I haven't heard by March I'll be sending out my resume to a few places and then I'll spend some time trying to make my app better for the next cycle.

2017 Applications Thread
GreenEyedTrombonist replied to kirbs005's topic in Communication and Public Relation Forum
congrats @ejpril88! I'm trying to continue with my education because what I'm passionate about is researching geek culture/all the things I list on my profile and sharing what I've learned. I want to write about my research and teach as well. Having Dr. before my name means being able to apply for more grants and fellowship opportunities, some kind of a chance to teach at university (even if slim in the market right now), and a higher chance that people who hear about/read my books will take my work seriously.- 733 replies

2017 Applications Thread
GreenEyedTrombonist replied to kirbs005's topic in Communication and Public Relation Forum
Today I read 100 pages in 1984, listened to a musical on repeat, watched NCIS, and went to work (TA job for a night class). Also, the chocolate I ordered showed up today so that's gonna be nice to enjoy in a few hours. I realize that there's always still hope, it's just a bit disheartening seeing acceptances come in for others and not hearing a word. I'm happy for everyone who is getting an acceptance, just also a bit sad for myself and freaking out about possibly entering the career force full time right now.- 733 replies

Today I started hardcore thinking I won't get in this cycle. I looked at open positions for a few companies and it just made me sadder. I'm now eating nachos and expecting chocolate tomorrow. Mexican food and chocolate are my comfort foods. I'm gonna go hide from the world for a few hours, k?- 733 replies

I've met and played Rock Band and Just Dance with Felicia Day (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural, The Guild, Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog) on Twitch. I've also met Mitch Gitelman (one of the creators of the Shadowrun games and founder of Harebrained Schemes game company). Oh, also the bands Chicago and Tower of Power. I'm a trombone player so I've had some good conversations with their horn sections. Other than that I think it's been mostly minor things. J. August Richards and I had a twitter conversation, I'm friends with a few decently known youtube vloggers, Wil Wheaton has replied to one of my articles, Wizards of the Coast sharing my work, etc.

I'm feeling the same way as you @EvelynD. Another program I applied to sent out some acceptances yesterday and still no status change for me. Right now I'm just gonna assume I'm not getting in and I'll work on improving my application for the next round. Of course, an acceptance would be a nice surprise, but I'd rather be prepared for the worst-case than let it surprise me later on.
-
Regarding venting about the results section, whenever I see someone post a rejection and bad mouth the program in their comment, I immediately assume the program dodged a bullet.

I applied to 5 programs in total, but 3 are in anthropology (same as my B.A. and M.A.). I've been comforting myself with, if I don't get in, I can talk to you guys to help me find additional comm programs I can apply to next season.- 733 replies

I support international grad students
GreenEyedTrombonist replied to SarahBethSortino's topic in Waiting it Out
As a US citizen, I just want to say I hope this gets resolved soon. Our borders should never be closed to someone because of their race, religion, country of origin, etc. <3 to all of you international applicants who are dealing with this on top of the anxiety of waiting to hear back from programs and planning out your futures. -

CSU's charge different tuition??
GreenEyedTrombonist replied to Catlover133's question in Questions and Answers
I have no idea if they're technically supposed to. Is the difference in the tuition or in the fees? Fees are decided by each individual campus and may be why you see a difference in price. -

How many times have you checked your spam box today?
GreenEyedTrombonist replied to hopefulPhD2017's topic in Waiting it Out
I just checked the status for the two schools that usually start sending out notifications at the end of January. Nothing changed, no emails, and no updates on those programs in the results section over here. Still, I keep checking... -
@Asperfemme I recently did a recipe and found out I didn't have one of the spices it called for. I just did a quick google search for "[ingredient name] substitute" and found out what I could use instead. Obviously, this would probably take some pre-planning, but it should give you options that will not hurt the overall recipe.
-
@Asperfemme Do you look into recipe substitutions? Some recipes may call for certain ingredients that are out of season, but they can often be substituted or recipes adapted to exclude the out of season items.
-
@AsperfemmeI'm glad you're not offended about the conversation. I know it kind of took over this post for a while. x] I'm not sure if this will help, but are you researching in-season foods? Buying only food that's in season (as opposed to food that needs to be shipped in from warmer climates) could potentially reduce your price per week. Again, not really sure if this would work for your location, but it could be worth looking into.

2017 Applications Thread
GreenEyedTrombonist replied to kirbs005's topic in Communication and Public Relation Forum
Bah, none of the programs I applied to have started sending out admission decisions. Two usually start sending things out last week of January (sometime between 25th and 29th), one first week of February, one last week of February, and one is kinda random. I know I shouldn't be anxious yet about the last 3, but the first two? No one's reported anything on this website regarding interviews or admission decisions and now it's basically the weekend. I also agree on that. I wouldn't have known where to start in undergrad for publications and, until a few years ago, my department didn't have a listserv, so knowing about conferences would have been much more difficult as well. I'm so happy I did my MA when and where I did because I have found my cohort to be invaluable in my time here.
