  1. None of the schools I applied to do an online status until they've made a decision. I know I would check it too often, but I wish I had an online status to check. x]
  2. This is exactly what I would do.
  3. My plan is to get them all chocolate and write them a nice thank you card. My cohort made it a regular thing to bring chocolate for the class our entire first year (when we take all of our grad classes together) so I know this is a gift my letter writers (all of whom were our teachers that year) would enjoy and be willing to accept.
  4. Yep! It's a favorite among students in the department and is taught by the department chair. It also relates to the work I'm doing, so I thought it would be a good choice.
  5. I'm doing that, but for my main project deliverable (due tomorrow). I'm down to seven things (all fairly short) I want to write before I format and turn it in. x] I did manage around 4k words so far today though. I've been trying to do this thing where I write a section and only get to check gradcafe and other websites when that section is done. Rinse and repeat. Right now though I'm trying to decide between trying to write more or getting some sleep and starting early tomorrow.
  6. I definitely focused on program fit when I was deciding where to apply. Tom Boellstorff is actually one of my references in my current research and I reached out to him before I started my application. Do you want to continue your current work in your next program?
  7. I'm writing my primary deliverable right now. I teamed up with two organizations on Twitch (a livestream platform) and an online community that frequents their channels to understand how online communities form, make certain values central to their communities, and how organizational practices can affect community interaction. My primary deliverable is a toolkit for organizations looking to start, maintain, and grow their online communities.
  8. That sounds really interesting. I'd be interested in reading your final report or an article or something.
  9. So I'm currently writing a small section of my grad project about what a community is and I'm just sitting here, contemplating communitas and how parameters of physical communities are altered in a digital environment. All in all, this is my way of procrastinating and also asking if there are any other digital ethnographers around.
  10. It depends. Some schools have interviewing as pretty standard and will interview maybe double the amount of students they intend to admit (I've seen some things saying the lowest admissions chance is typically 50% from these interviews, but it always varies by year). However, some schools send out rejections, acceptances, and interviews for students at the same time. Usually, those interviews mean that you met the requisites to get in but they're on the fence or want to hear more from you before making a decision. Of course, some programs don't interview at all. This seems to vary a bit between the subject you're pursuing, but is also variable by program. If you get an interview request, I would take it seriously. It's a way for them to get to know you and you to get to know them so you can both determine if the program is a good fit for you.
  11. It made my heart stop to read this until I noticed the biology tag, haha. Yeah, it sounds like it's just giving you some more info and doesn't really mean much about your status.
  12. What's the topic of your thesis?
  13. Me too. I'm considering just moving my phone far away from me. I have about 10 paragraphs or so left to write for my M.A. project today but I just keep checking. x]
  14. I haven't decided if I will apply again if this season doesn't pan out. I know I plan to start applying to jobs if it isn't looking good (or is still unknown) come March, but I'm not sure what I'll do if it comes down to it. Hopefully, wherever I end up will still let me do the research I'm passionate about and work with people in some capacity (preferably online groups, but not super picky at the end of the day).
  15. Definitely feel like I'm going crazy and it's compounded by everything I'm trying to get done before my spring semester starts. I'm working on all this stuff with deadlines coming up soon, but every notification I get on my phone might be an email from a program. Constant anxiety and disappointment when it's not, then have to get back into work, haha.
  16. Based on the last two years, people being invited for interviews at UC Irvine should hear this week. Most admissions that I've seen seem to come very late Jan or the first week of February at the earliest. :/
  17. So I'm just trolling through the forums at nearly midnight and gearing up to write at least another 2k words on my research project tonight. Hoping tea and music will help me kick it in gear. Also, my brain is anxious waiting it out, haha.
  18. Do you speak with a psychologist or psychiatrist as part of your treatment? Have you mentioned your concerns to them? They may be able to help you figure out if you're in a place that you can undertake the stress of a PhD program and how you could go about reducing your stressors if you do.
  19. I'm actually reading Brave New World next. I'm taking a course next semester called Thought Control in Contemporary Society and both 1984 and Brave New World are on the reading list.
  20. This is excellent advice and I find the differences in fields very interesting. Last year, I submitted a paper for a conference where I did exploratory research to show whether a topic was worth pursuing further. The paper went over very well, but I wonder if part of the reason I was comfortable doing this is because my actual presentation was a salon session (more seminar than lecture). The head of that session sent out a request for presenters on a listserv I'm a member of and I am passionate about the topic, so I didn't see the problem with doing something new.
  21. I read 106 books last year because the goodread challenge. Right now I'm working on 1984. Have you read Gilgamesh? Can't get more classic than that.
  22. I can't remember my advisor ever hugging me, but other faculty members in my department have. I'm personally not big on physical contact most of the time, so I don't feel like I'm losing out by not hugging.
  23. Update on my venting: Supervisor got back to me and basically told me to do what I'd been doing, which was tell the students to sit tight. Turns out, they did decide to curve the grades for that assignment, so they need to look over what happened and correct it themselves. x]
  24. Hey @montanem it sounds like we might be in the same program! I actually came across this topic on my lunch break from writing my grad project deliverables. I'm not applying to Sociology programs, but I have applied to programs outside of anthropology for future degrees. I did this because my research interests can align with multiple fields and the programs I chose cater more to those interests than any others. As to what grad school's actually like, a lot of that depends on the exact program you're in. I've loved my anthro program because of the freedom is has allowed me in regards to molding my project and supplemental classes I can take. There's a lot of reading in grad school, but that should come as no surprise to anyone. In addition, my current program has a syllabus archive and often posts the next semester syllabi early, so I've made it a habit to get at least a week ahead in my readings. That's certainly made it easier when an emergency's come up, or when I need to find time to work on other things (like PhD apps, my grad project, or one of my jobs, haha).
