Umass Amherst Admissions
bibliophile222 replied to SLP2018applicant's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
A piece of my remaining sanity just keeled over and died. How am I going to be able to function until April 15th??? Seriously, though, if this is the case it doesn't surprise me. Like Massachusetts in general, Umass is known for its massive bureaucracy and resulting paperwork fiascos. Years ago my ex-housemate had to submit a document (can't remember what it was, but definitely important) three times because they kept losing it. Hopefully things have changed since then, but... -
Last night I dreamed that I was rejected from the University of Washington. Fortunately I haven't applied there, so my dream self was merely confused. In reality, so far I've been accepted at University of Vermont, rejected at Boston University, and waiting anxiously to hear back from Umass Amherst, Northwestern, and NYU's online program.

Need help choosing a Pre SLP program
bibliophile222 replied to LT2's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I'm currently enrolled in Pacific University's online post-bacc and I recommend it. It's two semesters, 27 credits (three 4-credit classes per semester, plus a 1 and 2 credit course). It's rigorous but manageable--I'm working 50-60 hours a week on top of this and I definitely have very little free time but can get everything done. It covers all the typical prereqs and also provides an opportunity to get some of the shadowing hours done online. Not the cheapest program but not outrageous either. Because it's a full-time certificate program I qualified for federal loans.- 8 replies

Umass Amherst Admissions

Since I read this post and looked back at the results, I've been obsessively checking my portal and email. Yesterday I was trying to log into Spire and there were technical difficulties, so my first thought was "Ooh, I bet they're updating my results!" Nope. It's probably also not a good sign that I've been checking the results page about 3 times a day. I'm also waiting on Northwestern, and if they follow the same pattern as last year we won'r hear anything until the first week or two of March, and yet I'm still checking far too often. I hate being in limbo!!!! -
2018 Speech Pathology Graduate Applicants
bibliophile222 replied to ObsessLP's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Hi everyone! I'm a first-time applicant, currently taking a post-bacc year because my undergrad was Linguistics. So I'm kind of panicking a bit because I am a born procrastinator and just started the application process a few days ago. Three of my schools use the CSDCAS application, which is truly terrible. I spent over an hour yesterday just entering my courses, which is pointless because they get the transcripts anyways. I'm applying to UVM, BU, and Northwestern (I think I'm being way too optimistic, but oh well) via CSDCAS and also applying to the NYU online program and UMass Amherst--leaning towards UMass because it's a 10-minute drive away. I have kind of the opposite problem of many people on this thread and past threads: I have great GREs and GPA, but no experience in the field (I have about 11 shadowing hours so far, at least). My biggest concern is letters of recommendation. I got my undergrad degree online, and although I wrote a good deal in class I didn't interact personally with the professors, so I'm really worried that my recommendations will be mediocre. I'm banking on my GREs (168 V, 164 Q, 5.0 AW), my GPA (3.98), and my writing to get me through, but I've read so many other people's amazing stories of mentoring ESL kids, volunteering at inner-city schools, eight years' SLPA experience, etc. etc. Working for nine years at a gas station doesn't quite have the same ring to it... Oh well, fingers crossed.- 439 replies

how transferable are post-bacc programs?
bibliophile222 replied to bibliophile222's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I was thinking more along the lines of the post-bacc courses correlating to the pre-reqs offered by the graduate university. I'm trying to keep my options open since I don't know what grad program to enter yet, so I'm hoping to avoid entering a grad program and still having to take one or two pre-reqs. The fact that UVM's program is only 6 courses and many other post-bacc programs are 8 or 10 courses makes me a little hesitant. -
Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone had any advice regarding post-bacc programs--specifically, how transferable they are from one school to another, and if anyone has any experience with the UVM program. I applied really early because there are a few others I am applying to with earlier deadlines. They accepted me but said I had to respond within 14 days, before I've received any other replies. It is a 6 course certificate program, and I am a little worried that 6 courses may be considered too few, but they do offer a certificate of completion. Do you think some grad programs would make me take additional prerequisites? Would the certificate of completion help in this regard? Any advice is helpful, since I only have 11 days left to decide! (I plan on calling financial services at the first opportunity to discuss financial aid, another concern of mine).
