  1. Thank you both for your opinions! I guess I'll write it off for sure now. The time it takes to complete the degree might be related to funding, I think. The person i knew who got there did lots of internships in France and Europe (at embassies and also did the teaching assistantship) so that definitely helped her, I assume. Still, I think I wouldn't want to be pressured into those conditions (short time to finish a degree). UMichigan-Ann Arbor looks better in that area, I think.
  2. I'm also new at this (I hope you don't mind I quote you a little here btw). Some suggestions that I feel would make your sop even better: "My undergraduate studies gave me an excellent foundation in both theoretical and applied linguistics" : here I would try to explain how. Be a little more detailed on how your linguistics courses gave you that broad foundation. They'll look at your transcript so don't just list courses, but rather explain some highlights of your coursework and involvement in linguistics. "I believe one of the most important parts of being a teacher is to always strive to become better at it." : here again I would be more specific. Better in what sense? Maybe communicating better with students, using better resources, classroom management, etc. ? Those are 2 parts of your SOP that i feel would benefit from more detail (though you might have word limits). (if you could, my SOP is 2 threads above in this section)
  3. The relevancy of German is not everyday conversation (asides from recent German immigrants and a few scattered old people in the Midwest, there is indeed no many opportunities for speaking German in the US) but the fact that it's a very prominent language for research, of which you'll do lots in grad school. Elementary German is pretty easy, so if you can pick up a German 101 course you'll do yourself a small favor for the future. Spanish is easy, so you can come back to it whenever (during the summer maybe?).
  4. Hey everybody, Anybody knows of the quality of UW Madison for French MA en route to Ph. D program? Asking because I get some red flags from: 1) a student I knew from undergrad got accepted and her GPA/grades were average 2) no info about job placement for graduates on their website and 3) website says it takes less than 4 years to complete. Also, financial aid-wise the information doesn't sound promising. Just wondering if anyone had any info on the department. Thanks.
  5. Hello everybody, This is the first draft of my personal statement for UI-Bloomington's French grad (MA/PhD) program. I realize most people advice to avoid writing statements that sound like an accomplishment list but since for this one I had only 500 words, I went for this traditional route and simply stated why I think I am a good fit. The ending sounds a bit corny so I might definitely drop it (I had a good story to go along with that ending, but I ran out of words). Let me know what you think, any advice, suggestions, word is very welcome. This is the first I've written so far, and frankly I do not hate it and feel 80% good about it. Also I can return the favor if you just let me know! We're all in this together. Thanks! UI Bloominton SOP.docx
  6. First time applying as well. Very nervous. GPA is great, I plan to take the GRE in a few months. Top 3 choices right now: UNC Chapel Hill, Brown, NYU. Considering: Duke, UPenn, Hopkins, Penn State, Tulane, Stanford, NWU Backup: UGA Athens I think Brown especially is such a long shot. But I need to try this.
  7. Hello everybody, New member and confused by the layout a little. Working on apps for Fall 2018. I've reduced my choices for a French MA-PhD joint program to these schools. A note on my stats: graduated from college with a 3.86 GPA, magna cum, from a not very known but good college in SC. Do you think I have a shot at Brown, UNC Chapel Hill or NYU? Those 3 are my top choices as of now. Also looking at Duke, UPenn, Penn State, NW, Tulane, Chicago, CO-Boulder and Johns Hopkins. If you know of any other schools worth looking into, let me know! I am yet to take the GRE. Planning on doing so within four months or so.
  8. I wished someone had taught me about graduate school while I was an undergraduate. My GPA is excellent and so is my academic record and I could've gone straight from undergrad to grad but for some reason I thought for a second I could get a teaching license (I could not) so here I am, stuck with a gap year
  9. Hi, I am looking for French programs for Fall 2018 as well. Suggestions are highly appreciated. As of now due to proximity UNC Chapel Hill is my top choice, with Brown following close 2nd. Also love the NYU history program from what I've read. If anyone has any info please let me know
  10. Thanks a lot for this. One school more I've eliminated from my list.
