Should I retake the GRE(s)?
LeeLeeCzechIrish replied to Indecisive Poet's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
@indecisivepoet you are asking some great questions on here! Definitely seem ready to pursue a PhD-was just reading your question about conferences-I was happy to get some feedback in that arena! Good luck! -

Excellent scores-no one will care about your Quant score! DO not waste time with a retake- just my opinion, but once you reach a certain threshold, ad coms looking at writing. By the way, these scores are fine for any ivy if your writing sample and SOP stand out. Good luck! 84% on subject test is amazing-that test is a bear. -

See you up there! Congrats! -
This is JUST my opinion and I am sure others on here will disagree but I do not think this test is worth spending time on. Only the tippity top schools require it, and I think that by the time the committee even looks at the score, it is well after they have read SOPs and WSs. I think the general GRE is more of a factor. One of my schools required the subject test, and I wasted a lot of time and energy to study for a difficult test, receive an abysmal grade, and reel from self-doubt for the rest of the application cycle. After my general scores came back, I actually emailed a POI who recommended retaking it to get my writing score up a bit-point is, they look at that. Incidentally, I retook it and did worse and still got in to the program! But, I get it-if you have to take the test, you want to do your best-just keep in mind that the general test AND more importantly all of your written material are much more important.

Farmington is rural but very close to Hartford. I love downtown Hartford, especially right near the Infinity Music Hall, the capitol, Wadsworth Atheneum (actually by the UConn Hartford campus). Lots of bars and restaurants. The walkway along the river is nice as well. West Hartford is a bit more upscale with restaurants and shops. If you could live in capitol area that would be fun! Like any city there are some poorer sections (near Trinity College) but you will quickly learn. I am from CT but an hour from Hartford so I don't know any more than this cursory info! Good luck!

Accepted for literature last Friday. If it is any consolation, the DGS said they took a smaller class this year (probably because of abysmal job market). Hope Rhet/Comp is not done and you hear good news!! -

Anyone else married with children?

So excited to see you all on here! After a stint in the army, I was home with my 3 kids for a while, but now I am going back. I also applied locally since I cannot uproot, and I was thrilled to be accepted at UConn. It will be over an hour commute, but I am hoping to take my classes the same day I teach to minimize the number of trips. I am hoping to get a good number of my reading list books done on audible! I will most definitely be the oldest in my class, but I look forward to the challenge!! -
This is such a great question!! One of my POIs (he read over my SOP) said nobody uses "Dr." since almost everyone has that title, and that using first and last name was the way to go. However, this was for an SOP. Still not sure what to call people! Also, I did kind of get a little high when my students would call me "Dr" or "Professor" in their emails! I guess I should have corrected them...

Let’s talk books

I have really tried with James-Reeeallly tried-cannot get into him, but love Edith Wharton. Hmm. I know it sounds very traditional, but one of my all time faves is still Frankenstein. Did anyone read the article in New Yorker on the novel's 200th birthday? Explained a lot about all that "lack of mother" stuff in there. -
Honestly, I applied there because it was a doable commute for me. I knew nothing about it except what I read on their website. Their English department is ranked pretty high and they are part of the consortium with Columbia, Fordham, NYU, etc. I think you can take a few classes at these other schools. I am not holding out hope of getting in there since I didn't reach out to any faculty, but it still looks like a great program! Hopefully others who are more knowledgeable can chime in.

UConn for me as well! First notification at all! I had a really great fit there and will probably end up there. I am an older applicant so I was worried about not getting in-so thrilled!
