  1. To those who applied to MEM programs, I'm just realizing this now as I'm looking closer at Duke, but it's a professional degree. I already have a professional degree in planning. Do you think a professional degree in environmental management will not have the same weight/rigor as a Masters of Science in Environmental Science?
  2. If anyone else applied to the Civil Engineering Sustainable Design and Construction program at Stanford, I called the dept and spoke to someone. Apparently remaining decisions will be coming out next month. No specific date. Not sure how promising that is, since I've already seen a few admits on the results page.
  3. Thanks for that sliver of hope - hope it applies for social science backgrounds as well! Good luck and hoping you receive all the financial aid/fellowship you need! I totally agree with you. On the one hand, Stanford's SDC program would be a dream, but on the other, the thought of the Bay Area COL and Stanford engineering tuition freaks me out.
  4. Thank you so much for this information! So interesting that they did not send an official email to you. Hopefully I still have a chance. I've been checking applyweb incessantly for the past couple weeks. I come from a non-engineering background so don't have much confidence.
  5. Same, at least for the Civil program. I applied 6 days after the priority deadline, so am wondering if that affects when I'll hear back. When did you apply?
  6. Applied to Stanford's Sustainable Design and Construction program within the Civil and Environmental Engineering dept.. Still anxiously awaiting a decision. Almost thinking it's an implied rejection. But I'd just like to know so I can move on with what I'll be doing come Fall.
  7. I think your work exp and letters of rec are really important. I was accepted to a couple environmental science MS programs and I didn't even major in the sciences for my undergrad, and had no research experience. I think my recommendation letters and SOP really helped since I lacked the research exp. I also think they aren't looking for people with research experience per se but are looking for students that have a strong idea of what their research interests might be. So don't lose hope!
  8. Sorry I was just informed i posted this in the wrong place.... Sorry and congrats to all of the acceptances in Literature and Comp!
  9. Doh!! Sorry I totally didn't see the subtopic.
  10. Omg this~ haha, because I know that's what I'll be doing once I have all the options on the table.
  11. This is awesome! Congrats!
  12. Accepted to Duke Masters of Environmental Management and Indiana Bloomington MS Environmental Science. Still waiting on Stanford MS Sustainable Design and Construction :/
  13. I think it's appropriate as well. I think I gave them chocolates after undergrad and thanked them in person. This time around, I mailed my references a handwritten thank you with a small gift of reusable food wraps, since it's less feasible to see them during work hours due to my job. Amazon gift cards sent via email might be a little impersonal. If anything, a hand written card thru the mail is a nice gesture, and a small (~$10) gift with the card would optional depending how much you're inclined to. Just a personal opinion, but I think it's better to mail the thank yous now, even if you haven't heard back from programs first, to show that you appreciated the time and effort they put into supporting you no matter the outcome.
  14. Here to offer hope. I'm in a similar position; 3 years of work exp, 161V, 154Q, W5.0. I didn't really think I had a chance, but I was recently accepted to Duke for their Environmental Management program. Still waiting to hear back from the 2 other programs I applied to, including IU Bloomington.
  15. Congrats, now you have a few options! It's a relief to hear back from at least one of the programs... i'm still waiting on the others.
  16. I just heard from the Associate Dean (whose name is also Dean?) at Duke MEM. I think I'm conditionally accepted? I was told that I was not a good fit for the concentration I selected (Environmental Health) but that I could be admitted if I instead notified them if I would like to switch to the Ecosystem Science concentration.
  17. Congrats on your acceptance and interview!
  18. Only applied to three programs and have very average/subpar stats :/ so I'm a little worried. Field/Program: M.S Environmental Science / Sustainable Design and Construction GRE: 161/154/5.0 (on the low end for Quant :/) Experience: 3.5 years in the planning industry of a full service architecture/engineering/planning company. Schools: Duke, Indiana Bloomington, Stanford Status? No word yet.
  19. Congrats on your acceptance! Applied to Duke as well. I emailed someone from Nicholas to clarify if financial aid deadlines meant we wouldn't hear from them until after Feb 16th. He responded that admissions are separate, and they will be sending out decisions in the next two weeks, so some will hear before the 16th and others may hear after
  20. Anyone think that results will come in sooner than mid Feb?
  21. My application deadlines were spaced apart, and in my haste for the last two, I uploaded my most recent resume. I didn't realize until now that I had labeled that resume with the name of the first program I submitted my application for. Will this affect my chances for admission?
  22. What is the best way to contact a professor before admissions decisions are released? I would like to contact a few professors whose area of expertise I'm interested in (for a Master's program), but I have not specific research experience and would like to gain some as a lab assistant or volunteer in their lab... I'm not quite sure what the best approach is in emailing them. Any pointers?
  23. I feel your pain! I ended up sending the higher math score as well of the two, even though it was very average/below average based on the profiles I'm seeing on Grad Cafe. I have 3 years work experience as well -- I think that will help in our applications! Good luck! I will be in the same boat as you if I am lucky enough to be accepted into the programs I'm applying to. I took calculus in high school but not in college, so my college math credits are not enough. For my Duke application, I've indicated that I'm planning to take Calculus at my local community college. I've been in touch with my local CC and theyve let me know that a placement test is required. I might brush up on this via Khan Academy and ALEKS (ASU's free math program) before taking a placement test and hope for the best. If not, I would need to make up for it as Miss J has indicated. Would UCSB Bren allow you to make up for your course deficiency? @Miss J - Thanks for all of the info! Very helpful. I'm looking into the ecotoxicology track, but in general am interested in strengthening my analytical and technical skills, so additional GIS would be awesome! (I only know the very basics, and even then, I am not very confident). I see that you're from South East Asia. How are the demographics of Durham/NC? Wondering how stark the diversity is. I did my undergraduate in LA, and professional planning program here in Hawai'i.
  24. Is this before or after applying?
  25. @SerenityNow! That's helpful to know, thanks! I'm applying to SPEA as well!
