At Emory, the program said they would send an email to all candidates next week, letting us know if they plan to rank us or not (permissible by match rules). Out of curiosity, has anyone encountered other programs that are doing this?

Michigan sent out an email that contained financial information and also if they would rank us. It would be cool if all programs could let us know..

Do you have to pay tuition for summer term?  At other schools, you don't usually pay, since you are just doing clinical rotations.  I had assumed it was the same at Northwestern, but I could be wrong.

If they say we are registered for that quarter i assume that means we would have to pay! Thats something i may ask a current student about

For out of state students Ohio State is around $95k. They're trying to reduce the out of state tuition but it's not officially through yet.

I didn't realize it was that much! I know they're planning tor reduce it by $5,000 but still... it's a lot. But i have also heard that it's not too hard to get in state tuition for the second year, so I have been taking that into account when calculating for Ohio schools

How did you get this figure?  To my knowledge, you pay for 5 quarters of tuition at ~$18,000 per quarter.  Their website also says work study opportunities are available, which reduces tuition by $3,000 per quarter.  If you factor that in, the estimated cost of tuition is ~$75,000, which is similar to that of Stanford (and likely other private schools).

according to their pre-interview packet, the financial aid part says students are registered for 6 quarters at around $18,000 each. Students can get $18,000 remitted overall if they work but that still leaves them with a 90k tuition..more expensive than stanford!

We got some intel from one of our interviews that the school enrolls roughly 22% of those interviewed.

Assuming all interviewed applicants about equally qualified (a big "if"), and that the 22% rate is similar at all schools, your odds of being matched can be calculated based on the number of places you interviewed:

     Probability of being rejected = 1 - probability of being accepted = 1 - 22% = 78%

Probability you are accepted to at least one program = 1 - the probability you rejected everywhere =

    1 - .78(number of interviews)

So, say you are a beast like AJM19 interviewing at 9 schools, her (or his) odds of being accepted somewhere would be:

    1 - .789  =  89%

Again, some candidates are probably objectively stronger applicants, so it's not a random draw from those interviewed.  AJM19 might be a particularly strong candidate even among those called in for interviews so her (or his) odds might be higher than 89%.

Thanks for sharing this info! One thing to keep in mind though is that each school interviews and accepts a different amount, for example Ohio State interviews about 72 people for 10 spots but Cincy interviews about 48 for 12 spots, so the chances of getting in are higher there. I've been calculating my chances for each school that way and it looks like theres a ~13%-25% range of being accepted at the places i've interviewed at but because they're all different i'm not sure how to calculate my chance of being accepted in general like how you did above /:

Wondering if anyone that applied to Hopkins but hasn't heard back has reached out?

No but last year they sent rejections around March 1, so i'm just waiting for that lol. I think they already sent out all their interviews and i don't see anyone turning them down...

I've heard it's also to get a general idea of what things are important to you in schools without flat out asking. If you applied to all midwest schools and just one west coast school, the west coast school may be able to deduce that they aren't a top choice based on the location. Or if you applied to programs that all take 7-8 students, and are interviewing where they only have 4 spots, they may figure that out too. But, of course if you are at midwest school and applied to midwest schools then they can see that their location was something you were interested in and so forth.

At the same time, if you were from the midwest and travelled all the way to the west coast for an interview wouldn't it show that their offer meant a lot? I think the fact that we take time off work/school and spend money to go to these interviews already shows that they mean a lot! If I'm not at least 80% interested, I know I won't take off time and spend money to go.

I have had the same experience. I don't think the answer really matters, bcz whenever they ask us, they never seem to write the number down. I don't think we are compared to other applicants based on our answer of how many interviews we have. It's just a question that is personal yet definitely professional. They want to test our professionalism, so I suppose they don't want us to be all "chatty Kathy" with our patients and see if we can gracefully not give out personal details easily. Like some people might answer 5 interviews n go on to say that I applied to XYZ number and probably what the school names are or maybe how many they got last year n how many this year. Point is we should just simply answer whatever number it is n end the discussion there itself. N I think this year we have to be extra careful of the Match rules n not say things like "m ranking you number 1" or something as the continuation to that answer.

I actually have seen some of them write the number down though... i don't disclose the schools and if they ask i just say in the midwest, but i've even been prompted to name the schools before. I know it's probably not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but i'm just not a fan of those questions

  9. One question i've gotten at some interviews is how many interview invites i've gotten overall. The question makes me weary, because 1) I don't want schools to think i'm all over the place and just applied to a bunch of places at random and 2) i'm anxious about them having preference for students who only applied to a couple schools and got 1 or 2 interviews. I know I'm probably overthinking this but does anyone have any idea what the purpose of that question is? I always make sure to follow it up by talking about why I applied to their particular program and how much i love it, but i personally just don't like being asked about how many invites i have..anyone else have this experience?

What are your reactions to this hypothesis:

The posters on the GradCafe are the most qualified and dedicated candidates for placement in GC grad schools.  Casual applicants wouldn't even be motivated enough to find the board, let alone post. Therefore, people on this board would be considered in the top X% of candidates with respect to the strength of their applications.

Trying to gauge the number of interview invitations of a certain someone I know with the number of interview invitations of the people on this board.

i don't think many people apply casually..applications are expensive as is the GRE so i'm assuming that almost everyone who applies at least looks at program websites and sees that most schools only accept around 8-12 students/year. I feel like most people posting on here are just looking for a community of people we can relate to, because at least in my case i don't have any close friends or colleagues who are also applying for this program and i'm sure this is quite common.

So in my opinion, it's hard to gauge how qualified people are based on whether or not they're posting on this forum. At the end of the day, qualified or not, many of us are just trying to connect with others and help each other out :) Good luck to your person who is applying! I also know many people accepted into programs who only got one interview so # of invites doesn't mean much at the end of the day, just how well you connect with the interviewers at those interviews.

Well, they must like their caffeine over at Hopkins because I just got an interview at 11:15 EST.

Wow congrats!! Did they give you a date or ask you to rank? I'm wondering if this will be my first rejection lol

Any insight as to whether they are doing waves? I know based off of last year it looks as though they'll email everyone today or Monday and either offer them an interview or waitlist them?

they gave us a bunch of dates and we put in a doodlepoll which ones work. Maybe dates that don't fill will be sent out to those on a waitlist? I'm not sure but anything is possible!

  13. 46 minutes ago, FutureGC7 said:

I don't know if I m on their waitlist or not. I am hoping to hear though. Did you try asking for a Skype interview before declining the offer ?

No but because i have already received a bunch of interviews closer to home, VCU is not one of my top choices anyways and i know there are others who would rank them high so i want them to get it instead

  14. Ended up declining the VCU interview offer even though it was really hard to :(  It's just too far away and the date they gave me was a thursday, which was difficult bc it would mean missing wednesday and being tired friday. I hope one of you end up getting my spot if you are on a waitlist!

  15. @Blizzard ohh ok that makes sense i thought maybe you were scheduling both your interviews for the same week. That sounds tough! I would say go for the friday interviews if you have a choice that way you can take your time getting back (unless you work weekends). Some programs end the day with a dinner that isn't required and you can leave early to catch a flight or get in a little late if they start with breakfast. I'm sure there are other current applicants who work as advisors and might give better advice than me. One of the current students at Wayne state actually used to be my advisor so now i'm wondering how she did it bc she was always booked!

All of you who are getting lots of interviews, i'm curios--how are you making it work with your life? Any secrets/suggestions for flight searching, or scheduling secrets you've learned? Are you flying in in the morning and out at night, or staying 2 days at these places? What are you telling your bosses when you tell them you basically need a WEEK off? haha I'm nervous to break the news to my boss today, and it must be done...

I have driven/am planning to drive to all interviews so scheduling flights isn't a problem but this is exhausting (not complaining though lol). I am still a student and am lucky enough to work at my university so my supervisors have been totally understanding about grad school interviews. Is there a reason you are taking a whole week off? My interviews are all either monday or friday and i prefer the friday ones because at least i get to rest over the weekend. I had a monday one yesterday that ended in the evening so i'm dying at school today bc i got home late!

I can't say anything about the cost of travel because, obviously, that part sucks, but the part about not being their top choice, don't worry about that. Once you go into the interview, everyone is on level playing field. They wouldn't offer you an interview if they didn't like you. Everyone who gets an interview is qualified to be a genetic counselor, the interview is really to see if you fit with their program.

You're right and thank you for this! I think just knowing that other people got to rank their dates while i am just being given what's available is a bit discouraging and probably a downside of being on a forum. I have unexpectedly received a lot of interviews closer to home, which is why I am even debating whether interviewing at VCU is worth it due to travel expenses. I'll post my decision on here so hopefully someone who is waitlisted will know they still have a chance!
