I had a skype interview 8 days ago with my POI from UH - Manoa. and haven't heard back from her at all since. But, I got an email today from the graduate division asking me to send my official transcript & a scan of my passport. Wondering if anyone else got an email like this from UH - Manoa...?

Hi y'all...anxiety post here
I have my first (and only) PhD interview this week. It is at my top program, and it is my only chance this year to get into a PhD program.I have an interview at a Master's program that I also like, but I would love to jump straight into PhD. I love absolutely everything about the program and I truly believe I am a great fit for them (i'm really not just saying that!). However, that doesn't change the fact that I am nervous as HELL.
I am less nervous for the interview (because I feel like I have mock interviewed enough to at least having a basic idea of how to answer), and more nervous for things like the social and chunks of time between interviews to interact with current students and other applicants. I want to make a good impression and be myself, but I am worried about either coming across as TOO social or too reserved.
I am also nervous that some of my answers are kind of long-winded, especially for questions such as "so tell me about yourself" "why are you a good fit for this program" "what are your strengths and weaknesses" etc.
Also, I am in a cast and on crutches. The school really has bent over backwards to accommodate me which I am SO thankful for, but I'm worried about sticking out like a sore thumb or coming across as high maintenance.
Overall, I guess I'm just nervous because I love the program so much and really want to make a good impression. There's really no point to this post, I just NEED to vent, lol.
Hi! I don't have a lot of help to give you, but I did an interview weekend in crutches 2 weeks ago, and I have another one this weekend. Yeah, it kinda sucks. But people have been really nice about it for me. Wishing you the best!

Hi all! I had an interview last weekend, and my biggest piece of advice is: be ready to talk!
I expected interviews to be fairly structured but they were not at all. I had 5 in total, each 20 mins, and 2-3 of the profs had no questions for me. It was just kind of "So, what do you want to talk about?" or "What questions do you have for me?" Even my POI didn't have any questions! (We had skyped last month and she seemed to feel like she already knew what she needed to know!)
So have questions, or study ideas, or topics of conversation ready.
And for the profs that did ask questions, it was almost always "what research do you want to do?" so be prepared with a short speech about that, and be prepared for follow up questions and just generally to talk about your research ideas and interests.

Sorry if this is a dumb question haha (first-time interview-goer here!), but where exactly do people put their padfolios/document holders? Do they carry them around all the time, or do most people bring purses large enough to fit them? Is it weird to carry both a padfolio and a small purse? Also, for non-clinical interviews, is it expected that everyone has their own document holder going in?
I think I'm going to have to end up using a backpack... between my laptop, water bottle, notebook, and some sort of document holder. I'm not sure how else I could manage it all. I realize it's a bit informal, but it also seems like the only practical option.

Apologies if I missed this somewhere, but I applied to NYU and Columbia's Social Psychology PhD programs. I'm a first time applicant, and a graduating junior from my undergraduate psych program. I'm really excited to pursue my interests in social psych, but am really nervous about this application round! Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated.
Also, has anyone received interview invites from either NYU or Columbia?
I got my NYU psych invite around Dec 15th.

Hello everyone! Wondering did someone else heard from the developmental psychology program at NYU Steinhardt? The application deadline was Dec 1st but my professor did not submit the LOR until Dec 16th. Does anyone know whether the delay will impact the review of the application or not? Thanks!
Did you apply through the cognition stream? I applied to cognitive psych to work through a developmental prof and got an interview invite almost a month ago now. I was contacted prior to Dec 16th, so the LOR delay probably impacted your chances

Does anyone know when New York University's in-person interview is?
Jan 31st and Feb 14th - at least for cog. Not sure if the whole dept is at the same time.

Regarding the informal Skype interviews, will they usually let you know their decision at the end of the interview?
For the three I've done, no. But I've seen some people have that happen.

I mentioned this in the social/personality thread, but I got an invite for UC Berkeley. The prof is in both the social and developmental areas, but I was invited through Social. Not sure what this means for developmental people - but I got an official invite from my area, and then the dept as a whole.

Just wanted to mention here that I had a social/developmental skype interview w/ UC Berkeley PoI yesterday after being contacted by her over email on Monday. She didn't give me any indication of timing, though, so I don't know where other profs are at in the process. Feel free to DM for initials.

What are common questions that you've encountered in phone/Skype interviews?
I'll include some broad/common ones here, as i don't want to give away everyone's specific questions. Anyone can DM me for more questions, though
- Why do you want to go to (school)? Why do you want to work with me?
- Why do you want to go to grad school (in general?)
- What are your research interests, broadly? What topics interest you?
- What are you looking for in a lab/mentor? What type of mentoring style do you like?
- Tell me about some research you've conducted. (Be prepared to talk about everything from why the study came into existence, to methods, analyses, what came out of it [e.g., a publication, presentation, it's in progress, etc.])
- What research projects would you be interested in doing / what are your research/study ideas?
- What do you want to do after completing your PhD? (e.g., become a prof, go into clinical, industry, whatever)
- Do you have any questions for me? (make sure you have questions prepared!)

Curious if anyone has heard from:
Stanford, Princeton, UWash, NYU, Yale, Northwestern, UWisc-Madison.
Thanks!
My sense is that NYU sent out all of their invites (at least for cognition & perception).

I'm sure this has been asked before -- but any advice on prelim phone/Skype interviews? How prepared should I be in terms of knowing the POI's work? TIA!
I usually read 2-3 papers, 3-5 abstracts, like 10 article titles, and prepare answers to questions I anticipate being asked.

Just curious, did you apply to the dev psych program through their psych department or steinhardt? Same goes for the person who recently posted their interview and visiting days invite, thank you!
I applied to cognitive psychology (through GSAS) to work with a cog/dev prof.

Hey! Could the NYU person who posted on the results page that they got a dev interview invite @ NYU message me if they see this? Curious about PoIs. Thanks

I don't think things seriously start ramping up until about Dec 16 - 23. Really, dec 20-22 is when a lot go out (and for the west coast, a lot of invites aren't until January). I know "don't worry" isn't super helpful advice, but I really don't think it means anything yet. Good luck and try to distract yourself!

Hi folks,
i had a preliminary phone interview last night and am wondering if it’s common practice to send thank-you note. I was very appreciative of the opportunity but also don’t want to come across as too eager if a note after the informal interview is not expected. What do folks think? Thanks!
I always send a thank you! Just something simple and short, but I like to mention one specific thing that I appreciated (e.g., "Thank you so much for taking the time to thoroughly answer my questions").
Good luck to everyone!

Hello, first time applicant here! I had a Skype call with someone at WUSTL and unfortunately my webcam did not work. I'm really hoping I didn't screw things up!
Any sensible professor will know that having a functional webcam doesn't correlate with academic / research success I'm sure you're fine.

Hi! I primarily applied to social psych programs, but also a few social/cog/dev profs. I was the person with the dev cog NYU skype interview. Feel free to DM me if you want to know POI!

I've had 2 skype interviews for grad school (one this year, one two cycles ago) and one of my former profs sent me her list of grad school interview questions that she asks prospective students. Feel free to DM me if you want the questions I've been asked or the ones that she sent me!
And yeah, I'd definitely recommend making sure that your skype, laptop, etc. are working, dress somewhat formally, and have a water glass (or other drink) beside you. Good luck to everyone with preliminary interviews!

It's now been 2.5 weeks since my Skype, I got no response to my thank you email for the Skype interview, and have heard nothing else from the POI. I get that this is probably a rejection, but at what point do you email to follow up...?
