Unfortunately, trading companies are not eager to share their work (for obvious reasons). The ones that do get published are usually laughable. TBH, judging from my short experience in a hedge fund that tried to do that -- DL just might not be a good fit. I suspect that companies that do claim success in do it because of the deep learning hype. But don't take my word on it -- I'm not a specialist in trading and my experience took time a few years back. A simple search now gave me much more results -- like https://arxiv.org/pdf/1602.06561v2.pdf , you can look up the authors. But I'd still expect the research to happen in industry labs, not in academia.

Oh, thank you, that would be very useful! And yes, I was accepted for Computer Science.
-
Hi! I have also been accepted to Stony Brook and seriously considering accepting the offer. But from what I can see on on-campus living site from my acceptance letter all the dorm fees are under 5000/semester, which is lower than @indigopierogy said. I'd love to know more about living costs too. I'm also not sure how the housing works during summer -- should I pay a separate fee, find another place to live or is it included in semester fees -- as a foreigner I don't know the system.

Profile evaluation: PhD in computer science (Computer Vision)
Arkhy replied to popbuilds's topic in Computer Science
Post Doc positions imply that you have a PhD (which kind of makes sense, given the name =) ), don't they? And it might be impossible to get a job in academia or strong industry research lab without PhD. On the other hand somebody with 2 Masters might finish PhD earlier. Tot the original question: I don't think I'm qualified to do a profile evaluation, but compared to other applicants that I see in results page (including me =) ) your profile looks quite strong.- 2 replies

This is silly, but make your text forms big enough to type in my university name! And don't make me go through 5 search forms -- I know perfectly well you don't have my unknown Russian university -- let me just type in some kind of abbreviation so that you still can find it, since I can't fit the whole name because it won't fit in. Also don't make me type in my transcripts, and if you do -- make the form big enough, again!

Programs that have completed application reviews
Arkhy replied to tstone18's topic in Waiting it Out
Well, that makes a lot of sense, considering that we are applying for the same field and CMU is extremely strong in it. I actually think I applied to all your schools except for UMD. -
Which school is it?

OMG, I almost cried, you should't just say these things. CMU is my dream school but they haven't even begun processing for computer science yet -
Totally agree with MatineBluePsy here. I applied to 30 schools, but I made a list and said that I'm applying to a lot of schools from the very beginning. I sent the list to my recommenders and we synced with them. Also thanked them a lot, yeah, I know, it's very uncomfortable. Also I sent the most important ones first, so that if my recommenders were fed up at least I had those =)

I feel you. It's an obsession. And people from the programs I applied to are getting offers already. Also, I'm so afraid of interviews, I'm horrible with them and I don't understand what these interviews look like.
-
Honestly, I have no idea what exactly are they looking at. I have two strong LORs, one of which is from Google and another is from professor with whom I have written a book on machine learning, plus 4 years of industry experience, so that might have helped.

I'm doing machine learning and NLP, which are pretty popular topics, so really it wasn't such a big problem. Of course some of them align better with my interests, but I don't think I can pinpoint exactly what would be my thesis topic right now, so I'm open for some exploration =) Yeah, I'm an international applicant with unusual background, so I have no idea what are my chances.

Cool, is she in CS too?
