historygeek reacted to WhaleshipEssex in Programs for Early Modern France?
I'll echo the sentiments about doing a two year MA to nail down your languages. The type of language training required is a bit more specific than what you're typically exposed to in undergraduate language courses (at least in my experience). You'll need to show that you can read and engage with both the academic literature in those languages and the primary sources. Early modern French, like English, had different forms of spelling compared to the modern language and a part of your training should be nailing down those translations. This isn't to discourage, just to put a finer point on what is meant by 'language training'. Also note that when answering your 'why early modern France' question, understand that programs are really asking 'why specifically the early modern period and why specifically France?' Saying that you've always been interested in France, while it may be true, isn't going to cut it.
I can sympathize with you if this comes across as daunting, but take it from someone currently going the MA route to their strengthen languages and with plans to work on early modern France, it's only going to make your application more appealing.

I'm going to be a bit more brutal than the others: it's not going to be enough. Language ability is the foundation upon which a historian is built.
Any program worth attending is going to be flooded with fully-fluent applicants who have experience living and working in francophone countries, and probably a secondary ability in at least German, Spanish, Italian, or a creole. This is a handicap you will almost certainly not overcome without a substantial block of dedicated effort. With only a year - heck with three years - of French, any program that accepts you is doing so primarily to exploit you for cheap labor.
If you still want to do this, I would, at minimum, take a year off in addition to looking for a 2 year MA, either for coursework or, more preferably, a Fulbright or other experience in a francophone country.
And what about early modern France?

So bad. And my MA thesis is only partially revised, plus I’m preparing a piece for a conference and I’m significantly less focused! At least I don’t have to pack up and move, as many on this forum do. I would already be packing!

Haha, same! I have an honors thesis to write, archives to go through, and man, it is tough. Although there is a great sense of stability that I feel now.

Does anyone have worsened "senioritis" after being accepted?

I did, big time. Don't let it get too bad, but enjoy your last few months of college. I had a ton of fun after learning I was accepted. I wouldn't recommend my method of doing it... but still, it was a lot of fun.

This may be the wrong place to ask, but what would be appropriate dress for a visit/Admitted Students Day?

I was honestly incredibly worried that it might be a bad idea to get my Masters at the same place I got my Bachelors, so her response was almost relieving in that it confirmed what I had already thought (and solidified my choice!).

I was accepted to the MA-PhD and, though I declined the offer, I hadn't heard anything about funding. Since I'm an undergrad there, the program director urged me not to attend.

historygeek reacted to ImperatorGryphon in Finding An Apartment and Roommate While Out of State
As a recent Villanova alum (which is where I gather you're going, based on your signature), I recommend reaching out to Home Properties of Bryn Mawr, an apartment complex nearby the school. So many Villanova students live there (mostly seniors, who are forced to live off-campus) that the University runs a shuttle there between the hours of 8 am and 9 pm. While I'm not sure they have a list of people looking for roommates, they should be able to point you in the right direction; one of the administrators in particular is extraordinarily helpful, although I forget her name.
It's a bit pricy compared to most places of the country, but the Main Line is going to be expensive no matter what, and it is close to the Norristown High Speed Line.
If you have any questions about the area, feel free to PM me! Not only did I go to Nova, I was also a History major as well!

I've only been on one of these so far, but I think a nice version of your normal clothes is fine. I wore jeans and a nice sweater to the one visit I went to--and that was pretty much what everyone else wore, too. I would say avoid anything with holes or stains etc., but the whole visit was pretty casual.

See if they'll fly you over. I attended all of mine and one school booked my flights home with less than a weeks notice.

historygeek reacted to Novclouds in Should I tell school of other admission offers?
Congrats!
I don't think your acceptance to other grad schools will negatively influence your chance to get admitted to your current school. Instead, it proves that you are a very good applicant. Your recommenders and professors understand that you have applied for several programs in different schools and will be very likely to make a decision among some of them in the end. And they will try their best to recruit every good applicant to their program.
You can also inform them of your application results when you get all the offers. Since they have asked you for updates, it will be great to let them know you have been accepted, but are still interested in their schools.

I just received an e-mail notification from Penn State, so those of you that applied for the 19th-century United States program should be receiving your notifications soon!
